Brenton Phillips labels Kysaiah Pickett as the most talented SA player in the draft
Andrew Capel, The Advertiser
THE nephew of a gun is the most exciting Croweater in this year’s teenage talent pool and looms as a late draft bolter, according to SANFL talent manager Brenton Phillips.
While Norwood midfielder Dylan Stephens, Glenelg defender Will Gould and West Adelaide utility Will Day appear to have a mortgage on being the first three SANFL players selected at next month’s national draft, Phillips said Eagle Kysaiah Pickett is without peer when it comes to talent.
.....
“Based on pure talent and excitement, he’s the best,’’
.....
“He’s just an excitement machine, playing as that small forward he can really turn a game upside down very quickly. He’s one of those players that only needs to get a slight look at it and he can rip a game apart.’’
.....
“What you have to remember with ‘Kozzy’ this year is that he was dealing with a number of things. It’s a really hard environment to go from SANFL, back to a school football program, then a national program, back to school again and then back to the Eagles. I think ‘Kozzy’ just needs some stability and once he gets into a (AFL) system and knows what he’s doing week in, week out, he’s going to move up with his football.’’
.....
Uncle Byron — a game-changing, bone-crunching midfielder who played in flags with North Melbourne in 1999 and the Power in 2004 — said Kysaiah had “the whole package of tricks’’ and to “expect the unexpected’’ when he is around the ball.

“He can run, jump, kick goals, tackle and take a big screamer,’’ said Byron, who has played a key role in his nephew’s development.

“He could be anything.’’

i agree that the whole parenting thing is overrated too
wowowow back the truck up. I love being a parent. Our daughter has just turned 1. I’ll never say parenting is overrated.

For the first year, we both worked part time, as we both have very accomodating employers.

But my wife was asked to interview for a 3 year contract, which she was successful with.

The downside is I work weekends now, and the only family days we get to spend together are public holidays, and family holidays.

The upside is you get more time to spend working on draft scenarios. ;)

As an oppo supporter, you guys have treated me alright. I won’t overstay my welcome. See you in the preseason.

You came here with a reasonable idea and informed discussion. That is always welcome. :thumbsu:

Realistically we should be looking to do trades like 12 + 29 for a higher first round pick. E.g. 12 + 29 for 7 + 58 from Freo.
Just because I'm a bit of a draft nut, I decided to have a look. Not trying to disprove you, or prove the hypothetical offer works in your favour, it's just something I'm interested in looking at.

So, I've made a couple of assumptions.
1) GWS trade up to pick 3, this will cause all picks to slide back one spot when they match a bid on Green. They'll need to find some extra points for this, as their pick 40, won't be enough. Picks after 40 won't be moved back, only picks between Sydney at 5 and pick 39.
2) Fremantle don't trade pick 22, and end up using it to match a bid on Henry. This doesn't affect any picks after 22. So no picks pushed back with this bid.
3) Hawks have to use picks 30 and 42 in matching a bid for Maginness (I think Geelong will bid on him at 15, which will be pushed back 17 by then), this pushes picks before 30 back one spot, picks after 30 stay the same, and picks after 42 move up a spot.

If Adelaide bid on Mead at pick 25 (pick 23 is pushed back 2 spots due to previous bids), then pick 31 (29 is pushed back as well) is enough to cover it, with 47 points left over, which generates a new pick at 70 for you.

If Adelaide bid at pick 30 (was pick 28), then pick 31 is easily enough to cover, and there's 174 points left over, which generates a new pick at 58 for you.

If you took the trade, the 34 is only pushed back one spot, because both Fremantle's and Hawthorns picks they used to match on their academy kids, are both before it. So 34 only becomes 35.

So pick 25 requires 559 points to match, while pick 30 requires 432 points to match. Pick 35 is worth 522 points, and pick 47 (remember pick 48 actually moves up one spot) is worth 316 points.

So if Adelaide bids at pick 25, then you need all of pick 35 and 37 points from pick 47, moving it back to pick 50. If Adelaide bids at pick 30, you have 90 points left over from pick 35, which generates a new pick at ~65/66. And you still have pick 47 untouched.

Pick 35 can match any bid made from pick 27 and back, and only carries a 10 point deficit if the bid comes at pick 26.

As for Meads value, and where he's rated, this is a draft very (very) shallow on genuine midfield talent. If there's a club who needs a genuine midfielder with a pick in the 20's, Mead is probably the best mid left on the board by that stage.

Last note, after Mead, there are only two other club tied kids who might attract a National Draft bid. Both are Brisbane kids, and are rated as 40+ to rookie draft prospects.

Im not sure on how many live picks we'll have at the draft but our picks 66, 67, 68 and 71 are actually relevant here. When you look at GWS matching a bid for Green they will use picks 59 and 60 as well as 40 and potentially even another pick if they trade one in for points.

That moves our late picks up two places, in addition to the place moved thanks to the Hawthorn bid. This leaves our 4 fourth round picks worth a total of 362 instead of 237.

What this means is that we can do a trade to move our high end picks up the order and 29 back down and have enough for Mead still. For example, if we trade 12 + 29 for Freos 7 + 58 we end up with a total of 569 points after bids (407 without bids) which covers us for Adelaide bidding at pick 25.

I think we're much more likely to do that trade scenario than the one you proposed, unless we find that we can turn 29 into 34+48 with you and 12+34 into 7 with Freo - which would obviously be better for us by giving us 48 instead of 58.

My bad, I missed 59 and 60 for GWS.

Yeah if this club burns a second rounder which has value (so much so that Dougal didn’t go for much more) going from 12 to 7 after trading 10 for 12 everyone should be turfed.
I'm with you unless the Intel has changed on where Mead bid has come

I cant see Fremantle trading pick 7 as they will want to get a pick in before a bid on Henry.

GWS looks like the wild card at pick 6. They either trade up with Adelaide or Melbourne or should trade back for more points for Green.

Let’s say Fremantle use pick 7 on a player. A bid comes in for Henry with 8. That means they’ll lose 10 and 22 becomes pick 27.

If they trade 7 for 12 and 29, and the same thing happens (a bid at 8)...they still lose 10, 12 becomes 15...but they keep 22 and gain 29.

So it’s Henry, 7 and 27 vs Henry, 15, 22 and 29.

Obviously, if the bid comes at 9 they don’t lose as much.

If they are happy picking 8 picks later because they believe the player they will pick at 7 will be there at 15, I’d be taking the scenario that gives me three picks in the top 30 + Henry.

Its an interesting one. I see them wanting Robinson and Jackson so they could get them at 15 and 22 but its risky. Pick 7 gives them access to the previous tier of players so they would be leaving someone like Kemp or Ash on the table.
