TBF in the last few years have we grabbed a Vic where there was a better suited WA player?
We grabbed Logue in 2016, who was a WA boy.
We were looking for mids in the first round of 2017, and there wasn't a WA option in the top 5.
2018 I think Sturt over Hill was a very good choice, going by Sturt's first game.
2019 I think the only realistic argument is Robertson over Serong, but given how highly Serong was rated pre-draft he's effectively a steal at that pick, while Robertson would probably have been a reach.
I have posted Many times that our 1st round picks from 2007-13 have not been the best of times....
Saying that, for some strange reason the 1st round picks in that 2007-13 period were either average players, injury prone or had off field or attitude problems.
You look back.
2007: Rhys Palmer at pick 7. had a good 1st year. Won the Rising star award. Then got injuries and went to gws for 5 years and ended his career at Carlton. He still forged a 10 year career and was a solid player.
2008: Stephen hill at pick 3. He is still on our list and got 200 games out of him. Sadly he is injury prone.
2009: Anthony Morabito at pick 4. Was an exciting mid with pace. Had that very good debut season in 2010 then is out for 3 years with various injuries. Absolutely gutted with how his career went after 2011.
2010: Jayden Pitt. Still haunts us we chose him over Jack Darling
2011: Tom Sheridan at pick 16. He was a serviceable player. He was rotated everywhere from the bench to the wing or forward or back flank. 81 games and 31 goals from 2012-18. I wouldnt declare him a total dud, there has been other players in the top 10 that has played less than 80 games.
2012: Josh Simpson at pick 17. This also had me gutted. At least with Morabito, his excuses was injuries. Josh Simpson had off field and attitude problems. I remember seeing freo drafting him in 2012 and I thought.... Wow, we got another stephen hill. I saw some Highlights of him in the WAFL and I thought he had confidence. Kicked goals from 50 metres out on the run with ease.
2013: Pick 17 with Michael Apeness. I saw the logic of getting him. A key forward/Ruckman. Gutted he had knee injuries too. Even though he was drafted from Victoria, He was born in WA. So you could say we used a 1st rounder on a WA kid. He looked ok in soe dockers games but injuries wrecked him.
