Ok.

I’ve been talking up Sheldrick here for months - but bear with me:

He is an absolute powerhouse. The ability to extract the hard ball is just remarkable. And hard ball gets are still critical.

And he has a massive tank.

And a booming kick. He nails goals from 55 on the run.

And absolutely flattens opponents in tackles.

And he’s a genuinely good young bloke from a top school. He would have really impressed in an interview.

You’re going to love him as a Swan.

As for those worried that we reached - Freo at 19 was a real possibility.

I’m just stoked.
Love to see a knowledgeable poster talking about Sheldrick. Seems a nugget and a half.

You have talked him up and so has caesar88 (who is hitting on our picks with regularity now)

Know who I’m listen to from now on.

There's stuff we don't know behind the scenes, like would the kid stay in Sydney long term.
Yeah, the only thing I can think of. I wonder if we even knew that about Johnson given he was widely tipped to be gone waay before our pick.
He's dropping like the quarterback in Draft Day. Did nobody go to his birthday party? We probably shat the bed cause nobody else was picking him. Seemed like exactly the kind of player we could have used in the next two years to me. Plus I love a 40% off sale.

Feo make out like bandits taking him with the first pick in the second round.

How arrogant do you have to be to think Johnson is a steal and Sheldrick is not? News flash - no other team picked him either. Get behind Sheldrick and then you don’t have to spend the next 5 years hoping a rival player is better just to prove you right.
I hope to be proven wrong but I made a very similar comment when we selected Stephens instead of Serong.
It may be that he has told interstate teams that he would want to go back to WA in a couple of years. That seems to be the only logical reason.
I'd like to have a wager that Freo select him at 21.
Out of curiosity. How many phantom drafts have we seen in the past 2 months, who are selected by people who know about about this, selected Sheldrick in the top 30?

The dumbest thing of the entire pick was the TV pundits talking about how "tough inside mid" fits the Sydney mould - as if we weren't a shocking clearances team last year and instead were a kick and run team.

Still living in 2012 some of these pundits. Genuinely lazy.

It was the idiot professional nice bloke Johnson.

Kinnear did tell us there'd be some 'what the hell' moments.

Not the area we most needed at our 1st pick, but maybe we just couldn't get a pick trade to work out (i.e. getting Sheldrick at 23) and he was the one we really rated. I'll wait to see if we address our actual needs with our 2nd and 3rd before going off.

Bit OTT. It's not arrogant to have your mind set, or to be excietd about a pick. It's what we all do, doesn't have to be logical either. No need to appoint yourself guardian of the Swans faith IMO. We'll all no doubt hope our picks all turn into champs.

Highlights look very good. Reading up, he was best on ground in WA v SA game outplaying the No1 draft pick and has had purple patch late in season. Very stocky across shoulders.

Our recruiters are all class. It's no use picking someone favoured. What you want is to pick the best and that sometimes isn't what's popular or a shiny toy.

Mcinerney was chosen from reserve grade school competition but they knew what they were selecting.

I think this is a very shrewd choice.

Knightmare rated him 11 in his power rankings.

The commentators have the right spirit but, yes, a total misrepresentation of our draft philosophy. What they should have said is that the Swans have added another work horse to the staple because that really is what the Swans look for in a player.

Sheldrick's talent is probably limited in comparison to some of the other hyped draft prospects but I'm sure he's oozes professionalism to make it in the big leagues. His bread and butter is also what's missing on our plate so I'm happy that we addressed a dire need in the middle.

I do think we could have got him at pick 31 though so I'm hoping the Swans knew of some rival suitors plans to make such a ballsy call.

Johnson was right there....

Anyway, now that I have that out of the way.

Understand the Sheldrick pick, think we may have gone early but I am just a pundit.

The contested ball is his bread and butter and was demonstrated throughout the WA v SA series. Was the most consistent performed player across it. Inside bull with generally good disposal. Can be a bit touch and go with disposal when under pressure.

Overall like the select however is a bolter.

Think you may be

Think you may be 100% on this.
Suspect we wanted someone else at 18 and expected Angus to be there at 23 but weren't prepared to take the risk at 31.
I really like that we've picked someone with some heft to him. After Florent, Ling and Stephens, all of whom were lightly built at the draft, it's nice to see that he may be ready for the inside pretty early. Even Warner is not doing heaps of CBA yet.
Angus wasn't my first choice but I'm certainly warming to him.

Sheldrick at 22. One below Brown. Two above VanRooyen.

He wasn’t a reach. If Freo didn’t take him, Geelong would have.

PS: I’m still so happy. Now all we need is Bazzo & my work here is done!

People would have said Johnson would not have lasted till our first pick!!

Johnson said if he was drafted interstate, he would be back in WA in 2 years. Hobbs, who was drafted by Dons, said he would not go interstate. The same with Ward, he also told interstate clubs not to bother. It seems players are doing what they want, the draft will soon be a case of 'Can't take him, he won't come because he is a child who has a tanty'. Just shows how entitled these blokes think they are. Sad really. I can remember when getting drafted, no matter who drafted you, was just the biggest joy in a player's life. no matter who drafted them. I mean, at the time Jude was drafted by us he could have sulked and said 'I wanna go home'. But no, he put his head down and now is a Swans legend.

I think we have done well. By the looks of it this kid has all the Swans traits plus some. He tackles like an NRL player, has a defensive game, can win the ball in tough places, under packs, gets lots of hard ball. Now the plus, he can beat better rated opponents, see Horne-Francis. can kick both feet and is good, very good on both. Has been compared to Lachie Neale. Now most here were hoping for a big mid like a Kennedy. This guy is only 179 but he is 88kg. He's a Lethal leigh Matthews type of build. haha. Maybe we pick up the tall mid later.
