Is a really good prospect but doesn't fill a need for us imo

See a bit of Chad Cornes about his game.

If he can play down back?

Scouting notes from a few weeks ago.

“Max Gruzewski
Another great user of the ball by foot, 12 of Gruzewski’s 16 disposals were kicks as he slotted seamlessly back into Oakleigh’s back six. The top-ager is a mobile 193cm prospect, and lowered his eyes nicely when hitting targets up the field. His punchy and effective distribution was particularly noticeable in the first quarter, but slowed as Bendigo began to get well on top.”

Good judges are pretty keen on him and at a 25-35 pick ?

This is just wrong

Its not a huge gamble but the club used a bit of capital to go get him, you can't ignore that.

I agree he has all the pieces but it was a gamble, you can argue how big and and educated until the cows come home.

Drafting is essentially gambling

He's a good prospect and I'd take him if we were drafting without a specific need but otherwise, he's another 193cm tall and we need someone closer to 200cm. Which is why I'm keen on Van Es with a pick in the 40s

What’s happened to Anthony Munkara?

Would love to get him with our 2nd round pick or later in the draft.
Nothing has happened per se but he doesn't have as much exposed form at the top level for an u18 and so is deemed to be a bit raw. I'd go for him with a 2nd round pick ahead of Rioli. The thing that really really worries me about Rioli is we get 1 full good year and then he barely turns up. It's a real risk

So our options for FS and Academy this year are:
  • Harper Montgomery
  • Will Francou
  • Nathan Barkla?

I assume they're all rookie at best, with Barkla on the Cat B list, if at all? Any thoughts?
Given our list constraints at SANFL level, and as far as I'm aware, the only extension you can have on your 42 players is to add Cat B players. So under those conditions IMO if you have 3 potential cat B players that have a hint of potential, then personally I'd list them all!!!

We're better off, as a club, having 3 extra AFL listed and trained people in our system, helping contribute at SANFL level, than picking 3 more SAAFL div 1 players to fill gaps on weekends.

That's my thoughts.

I would assume only Barkla can be a cat B rookie, as he is NGA. Monty & Francou as FS would have to be cat A.

Always said we should have an Usain Bolt and Andre The Giant type as Cat B’s every year. Just take the chance.

I don't think those 3 guys that were listed are either Bolt or Andre though.
Need some African talls - or strongly built road runners.

Probably need to focus on pick 54 now.
Yup, let's hope it's Van Es. JHF will fix midfield issues. Rioli somewhat fixes forward line issues. We may get Ratugolea but Van Es will hopefully fix our KPD stocks.

The JHF deal will also mean we can't trade future picks without an exemption so will be interesting!

This board needs to dig in deep to unearth some gems before draft night!

After the JHF news, I think this thread should be archived.

Do we have to take anyone in the draft?
We might have to elevate a rookie or 2 rather than commit to pick 100 for 2 years.

Then again pushing out players like Hayes might make marginally more sense if the pick we get ends up being our earliest one.
