Twomey's first phantom form guide for the year.

If we're picking between 4-6, I'd love Duursma or McKercher. Desperately need to get a young gun mid in that can impact games early, but more importantly lead our midfield in the future.

Watson is intriguing for sure, but a pick that high on a 170cm small forward, regardless of talent, seems a big risk.

Please no KPPs with the first pick 🤞

“Can impact games early” shouldn’t be the emphasis with a top 4-6 pick. Best available player, even if he’s not as developed physically at 18/19yo as another kid who might be able to rack up 20 touches consistently in his first season. Don’t get cute, get the player assessed as most talented with the highest ceiling.

Not untrue, just remembering a time where kids were just over the moon to be drafted and living out their dream.

Absolutely true but I think west coast are an exception, arrogant club who refuse to change their ways. If there was ever a toxic club to say I dont want to go there its them.

Would Hawks potentially give up both this year and next years first for Reid? They'd want to be pretty confident about jumping up the ladder.

I think their pick will be top 5-10 next year still, but Reid is worth that. They have enough young talent coming thru to miss out on one draft to grab a future star.

Yeah maybe. Will be interesting with West Coast, they might see two top 10s vs one top 10 and two 15-20's an take the latter since they have so many holes in their list. Will probably all come down to if they have specific players in their sights. Also if we can get Gold Coasts pick it would go a long way.

Could offer two top 10s immediately which would probably be more enticing to Eagles.

They aren't competing anytime soon. Id just take the best offer regardless of how many years it was spread out over.

Yeah that's what I'm saying with the Gold Coast bit. If its like pick 3 + future first (probably top ten pick) vs pick 4 + Gold Coasts pick this year (currently 6) then we trump them.

It will be a good 5 years before west coast turn things around , reckon there is even the potential for them to get even worse yet given the state of their list and how many senior players will/should be gone next year.

Good luck to him. Must be nice to have interest from multiple clubs while being nothing better than a very average player.
Helps that he's basically free.

Hence why I said "but more importantly lead our midfield in the future".

Realistically, the bulk of modern gun midfielders impact games in their first season. Look at the first year stats of some of the league's best midfielders:
  • Oliver: 13 games, 19.2 disposals, 4.8 tackles, 4.2 clearances
  • Petracca: 17 games, 17.4 disposals, 3.3 tackles, 0.7 goals
  • Mills: 22 games, 18.6 disposals, 4.8 marks, 2.3 tackles
  • Martin: 21 games, 20.2 disposals, 4.8 clearances, 0.5 goals
  • Laird: 18 games, 18.5 disposals, 4.1 marks, 2.8 tackles
  • Merrett: 20 games, 15.2 disposals, 4.0 tackles, 0.6 goals
  • Wines: 24 games, 18.8 dispoals, 3.9 tackles, 4.8 clearances
  • Butters: 19 games, 14.2 disposals, 2.7 marks, 2.5 tackles
  • Rozee: 22 games, 15.4 disposals, 1.3 goals, 3.5 marks
  • Brayshaw (Freo): 17 games, 15.9 disposals, 4.4 tackles, 2.9 marks
  • Serong: 14 games, 16.9 disposals, 4.1 tackles, 3.4 clearances
  • Bontempelli: 17 games, 15.9 disposals, 0.9 goals, 3.4 tackles
  • Macrae: 13 games, 17.9 disposals, 2.7 tackles, 2.7 marks
  • Walsh: 22 games, 25.1 disposals, 5.0 marks, 3.2 clearances
  • Daicos: 25 games, 25.8 disposals, 2.2 tackles, 4.1 marks
  • Ashcroft: 17 games*, 22.5 disposals, 3.6 tackles, 3.8 clearances
Obviously, you're not expecting a kid to come in and impact games like Ashcroft, Daicos and Walsh off the bat, but if you're spending a pick that high on a mid, you expect them to come in and play early. If they can't break into the team with regularity in year one, it's not a great sign regardless.

With someone like Duursma or McKercher, you'd want them to play a role on a flank rotating through the mids in year one (giving us a much-needed extra rotation in the middle), before eventually leading the midfield down the track.

We're in the window now, but also need to solidify our future. Getting a young mid that can help in both regards is ideal.

Let's concentrate on the now and future.

No because he counts as a DFA

Are you sure? I think he's classed as unrestricted because he was delisted and then re-rookied. That's different to being a delisted free agent I think?

I have no idea but I know we definitely don’t get compo due to him being delisted by us.

I'm pretty sure delisted free agents are just the delisted players from that year. Jordon was delisted and re-rookied, which means he now qualifies as a 'free agent for life', but that means he's an unrestricted free agent rather than a delisted one.

I wish AFL would scrap free agency compo.

It should be a binary yes/no decision for a club to re-sign Player X at $Y for Z years.

Sick of this annual charade of clubs sounding out their compensation packages before deciding if it’s better to do a contrived trade.

Have we ever had a bad recruit from Tassie?

Neitz is an all-timer.

Howe was handy recruit, notwithstanding he played his best for Collingwood.

Garland was one of our best players during the dark age.

BBB is a premiership winning full forward and will be our spearhead for the 2023 flag!

Can’t go wrong with Tassie picks!

Do people here seriously follow the junior leagues? I form all draft opinions from highlight videos and mock drafts about 2 weeks before draft day.
