Do you have a link to the article? I can't find anything on Google or the AFL website. Not doubting you, just trying to find the article you referenced.
From the article below:

"For instance, it would have allowed Adelaide to list one of Rory Sloane or Taylor Walker as a veteran for 2024 and opened up another spot on their primary list. The idea was designed to keep veterans in the game without sacrificing a list spot that a youngster may have taken, with the veteran’s full payments still counted in the salary cap."

There's a link in the post above

MAGPIES DEALS AND RATING

RATING: A+
The best in the business at finding diamonds elsewhere as evidenced in this year‘s premiership side.
"finding diamonds" is an interesting way of saying stars from other clubs wanting to go there for the extra publicity and dollars they will make.

yep, thats definitely a huge part of it. but pulling someone like Bobby Hill was pretty amazing talent spotting as he hadnt shown that level of performance from what I had seen previously and most year (or 2) they seem to get someone useful even discards like Mitchell or Cameron allowing Grundy to be discarded. Hard to think that 2-3 years ago when they had the fire sale and got rid of Treloar, Stevenson, Grundy etc (whilst paying chunks of salary) whilst finishing 17th in 2021 to now being premiers...They are doing something right but acknowledge their vets are amazing quality (Pendles, S/bottom, Elliot etc) and Daicos's and probably the best coach now in the comp

Pre 2019 list is embarrassing
This is pretty deceiving list though. You need to add what draft picks the clubs still had after those trades for it to be meaningful. Most of Adelaide’s trades were for late picks that would have also been speculative at the draft, while keeping our top picks. Rankine is a great get, but pick 5 is still a high price.

Cheney and Lowden only cost a few spots backwards on some late picks, not really a bad or good trade. Gibbs however cost pick 10 which was a terrible trade in hindsight.

Your comment is fair - pick 5 is a high price... but I think it was a great trade. For comparison, what would Adelaide have done with Pick5 if we took it to the draft, here's the list of who went in the 2022 Draft - would you rather have Rankine, or;
5. Elijah Tsatas
6. Bailey Humphrey
7. Cameron Mackenzie
8. Jhye Clark
9. Reuben Ginbey
10. Mattaes Phillipou
11. Oliver Hollands
12. Jaspa Fletcher
13. Jedd Busslinger
14. Elijah Hewett
15. Matthew Jefferson
16. Harry Rowston
17. Our boy Max Michalanney, what a gun.
18. Josh Weddle
19. Ed Allan
20. Jacob Konstanty

Right now as we search for a big bodied midfielder you could make a case for Ginbey, or have traded up in the draft to get Harry Sheezel at #3, but I'm pretty happy with Rankine at this stage... maybe time will tell a different story.

Granted: these lads are only 1 year into their careers so perhaps it is harsh to judge them against Rankine, but as we surge towards 2025, I'm happy with Rankine in the team ahead of these colts.

Every club had access to two players in the NSW Scholarship Scheme. We were the only club that chose wisely. Do you remember who are other free hit was?
The runner from Merimbula. Sam Martyn. Great athlete, not much in the way of footballing skills.

I’d like for them to take the opportunity to unambiguously clear it up. Won’t be holding my breath tho!

If I say, I’ve heard that the Haynes deal is falling over because he won’t come without a decent extension. He wants 3 years and we’ve only offered 2.

I just made up that, but it sounds plausible doesn’t it?

I’m just flipping a coin.

I want Bailey Humphrey all day long

It was back in 2011 when Port finished 16th (out of 17 teams at the time) with 3 wins. They traded it to West Coast who drafted Fraser McInnes. Port got Brad Ebert out of the deal.
