Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

Fail to see how Ruscoe is any better then Hughes/Worner/Wagner

His disposal is very average, classic case of overrating a player because they're in a good team

Only thing I can think of he’s younger. Outside of perhaps Hughes I’m not sure age is of a great concern.

I’d rather draft an 18 year old to add to the depth of that group in 18-24 months tbh. It’s not as far off being needed as this board thinks.

It depends on who ends up in the midfield tbh

mid/medium defenders under 25 include Young, Chappy, Walker, Clark, Worner

Probably fine to not take one this year to replace Wilson but will need one the year after to start developing replace Wagner/Hughes

I doubt we’d have interest in Ruscoe.
Brockman possibly but really seems WC are in pole position for him.

I hope we have a genuine stab at someone like Dylan Stephens - even though he is an SA boy. Neddy Flanders now seems a long lost pipe dream unfortunately.

Bailey Williams as a free agent would be handy.

Deven Robertson out of contract
Jake Riccardi out of contract

Banfield and Treacy open up 2 spots on the RL

We don't need 8 or 9 selections this year, can't keep turning over a list like that every season, we need some stability
I will say this...

If freo ever goes back to constantly making finals like in 2010-15. or contend for finals like 2003-7, the team will make few changes like 3 or 4 player taken in the national draft.

I cannot overstate how much we need to draft a high pick small forward. We need one this season but don't have the capital. Surely if there is one we like we trade our future first to get into this draft. Pick up Brockman as well and we will be setup for the future.
LOL... No chance.

We already have been mocked for finishing bottom 4 this season with no 1st rounder. I rather keep our 2024 1st rounder, incade we finish bottom 4 or 6 again.

If we finish bottom 4 again then we may as well start another rebuild. We are at the point where we should be trading to bring in the final pieces for a flag push.

Really depends how other clubs value our F1, if they see it as a top 4 pick next year, ie they don’t think we’ll bounce, I’d be happy to trade it away at top dollar.
However if they believe we could bounce and only offer a pick in the teens, hang on to it.
This is going to be a very compromised draft, with Walter bid and McKay compo likely pushing everyone back at least 2 spots in the top 10 and a further 4 F/S and Academy kids in the top 20, will mean our current pick 21 will end up being 25-26 on the night.

Nah. Young is a midfielder.

Nah. Young is a midfielder.
Probably only a positive for list depth if he could play elsewhere.

It's probably only sustainable to have around 27-28 genuinely AFL level players consistency on your list tbh so versatility is ideal. After that the salary cap starts doing it's work and you lose players outside your best 22 - good clubs recruit/develop well enough that losing depth players isn't an issue.

Surely that's not enough

1st + Neale not great from our perspective, but it would be similar to what they gave up for Dangerfield. Geelong don't trade like Bell negotiating with Melbourne. Darcy might still be contracted, but they will still base negotiations on getting him as a FA next year (i.e. either accept unders for a contracted player, or we will wait another year). They will argue we would only get a 1st round compo pick at maximum, maybe end of 1st depending on how much of their offer is actually in the salary cap. And they will say their 1st (if they stay where they are on the ladder) is on par or better than what we could get end of 2024 from free agency compo. If they make the 8 and go on a run to push their pick into the 15+ range, then that changes things a bit, but I still wouldn't expect them to give up the farm.

Geelong's first and Shannon Neale is less than we got for an out of contract Cerra or a contracted Brad Hill, both of which had substantially less value than a contracted Sean Darcy. It is nowhere near what the trade is going to be, if one eventuates

Difference with both circumstances is that if Geelong don't put a huge money deal in front then the Freo offer would be a matched deal immediately.

And then it's a trade anyway, cost them three first round picks last time they tried to buy a free agent tall.

Freo's starting point would be at least two first rounders, one in the top 10. Eventually they might settle for a top 10 pick and a second rounder. That's if a trade eventuates, which I don't think will happen

That would be the trade when he is out of contract in my opinion.

A pick in the top 10, and second rounder, is not better value to us than re-signing Sean Darcy IMO

He’s a restricted free agent so if Geelong only put up say, $600k on paper for him and the rest is outside the cap, we would simply match the bid and force a trade.
It’s a moot point anyway as I don’t think they will happen. I reckon he’ll stay here.

If he goes anywhere it will be the Dogs at the end of 24.
