Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

What about Xavier Duursma from the Power?
Strong pass.

Never rated him. Always laugh when people say how good their trio is (Rozee, Butters and him). It's always been the duo, Duursma has always been meh, Hinkley has started dropping him for a reason.

Stuff him then - send him to the pre-season draft so north can have him
Yeah I say aim for 15-25, if they don’t cave just set this as an example to others that if you ask for a trade you might end up somewhere you don’t want to be. Rather do that then get a pick in the 30s or 40s in this shallow draft.

What we say to Hawthorn is, via Colin Young, pay Hamling a two year $900k per year deal as a free agent then extend him for another year in January for $100,000 and have your player for three years averaging $650k (which is a lot but it's key defender money now for some reason). Or another two seasons for $200k total making him a $500k per year signing.

Then... Freo get pick #6 from the AFL as free agent compensation.
Freo trade Henry and pick #40 to Hawthorn for Denver GB, where his contract money is used to top up Hamling.

Everybody wins.

Except we have a spud DGB as a backup KPD instead of Hamling. Granted, pick 6 makes it appealing.

They want a key defender, they want Henry, they don't want to pay a high price for Henry, they have so much salary cap they are paying OUR player to play for us.

The AFL will grease the wheels of the exchange here for everyone.

That Joel will get a huge amount of cash might be a side effect hahaha

As if Hawthorn were ever going to say they'd trade pick 15-25 at this stage.

We'll start high, they'll start low and we'll meet somewhere in between.

Also hard for Hawthorn to trade a pick in that range when they don't have one.

I'm not expecting more than 29, even though I think that's cheap. If we give something back with 29, no matter the justification, I'll flip a lid. We have nothing else to do by the looks of it, be obstinate on an NGA player that we've had since he was 15

I can’t imagine we actually put such a large range as an asking price. Absolute BS. Pick 15 is miles different to pick 25. At end of the day our preferred price range 15-20 and Hawks prob closer to 30-35. Swings and roundabouts ends closer to 25. Pick 29 will likely be the critical element with a swapping of picks to make both parties feel comfortable. For mine Hawks will end up with current later picks for pts and we end up with a future pick. The pts value will sit slightly in our favour when considering pick 29.

Similar to when Geelong wanted a pick inside 25 for Clark, but we had 27, so had to trade up to 22.

Ok.

Not a lot happening so have trimmed this a fair bit. (And yes, I took Heppell out. It seems redundant given that it's such a certainty)

Look who had the pick range correct. #humblebrag
15-25POSSIBLE

  • McKay (the North version) off to the Bombers Hawks Swans Bombers. Does anyone actually have mail?
  • Brandon Zerk-Thatcher and Ratugolalkassdash "Esava" heading to Port along with Grundy
  • Dusty and Rance had some nice catch ups with Dimma.
  • Clarkson is apparently a "big fan" of Gaff.

Blows my mind that Bell has a reputation for being difficult when he hasn't gotten value on either end of a deal in recent memory.
Off the top of my head, I'm doing the following trades again in a heartbeat:
  • Lobb for 2 2nds
  • Jackson (the difficulty is both teams knew how good he was)
  • Cerra for Amiss
  • Brad Hill for essentially Serong
  • Brodie and Johnson for a pick Gold Coast turned into Ben Long
There's a few more that I think are more grey area (I think what we got for Logue and Tucker was alright but it's hard to call that a W for us coz North were never using those picks + the Esava situation will make that trade look bad by comparison). But I'd suggest the pattern is:
  • we often play hardball when trading our players in contract
  • we don't really play hardball when trading our players out of contract
  • when we chase targets the result often seems like an overpay, but the targets in recent memory have usually been good enough that I don't particularly care about stuff like the future 3rd we missed out on when chasing Jordan Clark. For all the criticisms people have of Jaeger, at the very least that move saved us from paying way more for Sharp than we will this year.

🙏

The guys an absolute light weight when it comes to the negotiating table.

He makes up excuses as to why he lets our players go for unders (OOC, no leverage etc) but then bends over willing to oppo clubs demands the other way in the same position when freo are trying to get players in.

I think people look at the Weller deal and think "hardass"

But that was Lloyd
He gets a rep from other team supporters because of the "not trading for Hogan anymore" thing, which he should have stuck to and then he backed that up with "we are not trading Lobb" thing which was obviously a lie.

I think he gets very good deals on contracted players, every time without fail. I think there is room to be stronger on OOC players both bringing them in and trading them out but it's not end of the world stuff

The thing is, every club boss / list boss (who's half good) does the exact same ting.

#VICBIAS all over again. ;)

Erasmus value 6-10?

He was taken at pick 10 and his value certainly has not appreciated

I actually forgot to delete him tbh.

But there's no way you'd prise him out, contracted, for any less.
