Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

For me we have to keep Darcy for next year at least, even if he wants to leave this year. If we could get someone in next year as a mature replacement like Naughton or the likes it could be made somewhat palatable to lose him. We get another year of good footy out of him and can always match a RFA offer and force a trade in 2024 if it comes to it.
We just have to put a line in the sand from losing players. It’s not acceptable.
I highly doubt we’re letting anyone contracted leave this year. Massive emphasis on stability.

I don’t mind the idea of moving Darcy,
Also don’t think it’s a big of a culture shift as it’s made out to be. Could be that Im more fond of the draft than actual success… that being the highlight of the year for last decade will do that to ya.

For discussion purposes,
This would be the year to cash in on north’s bounty of picks.
Makes sense he goes there, very close with Tucks & Griff from what I know.
Add a couple of firsts + our next years F1 we should be able to get a ready made player in, plus a first rounder.

Only say this as imo the ruck position is over rated. Much rather grab a brusing hard working type, like a Soldo, Moyle, Pruess or Ladhams or Bryan.
Let them do the majority of the first 3 quarters in the ruck then release Jacko in the 4th against hopefully a spent ruck.
Use the picks an $ from the Darcy move to try pry away Taylor, McDonald or Naughton.
I think they fill a more important role and one that is harder to fill.
As opposed to getting a back up ruck to shoulder the load till Jackson’s ready to be released.

Bring on trade week so I can stop stewing on these pies in the skys.

Haven’t you seen? North Fans think they can get him (and the suns pick 4) for a total of 4 early second round picks

Just listened to the Garlic interview. Sounds to me the Darcy contract extension is up in the air atm. Reckon he wants more $ next contract and we are holding out.

Nah doubt it's about the money. The rumours have always surrounded Darcy being a big family man and missing his fam. Of course they don't exactly live in Melbourne...

Darcy is a big piece of the premiership puzzle. Our brand of footy is based on "winning the contest" and he is essential to that. Our flag window will be between 2025-2028, good luck turning your draft picks from the Darcy trade into a replacement in that time frame.

I hear ya,
That’s why I suggested replacing Darcy with a lesser ready made.
And using the picks to go after a legit star for another line.
Reckon that Ladhams goes alright when he’s not getting rubbed out for being a campaigner. Grab him for chips & then use the draft capital to go get a gun forward or something

When do we start to get compensation for poor player retention?

yes I look at the list of players we’ve lost and if you add Darcy to that, I’d argue we’re right in the “we should be getting th same academy rules as Gold Coast you bunch of cheating campaigners” areas

if he wants to go, this year is the year…we tell him he HAS TO go to North and we want pick two or three and at least one of those end if first round picks for next year

I started watching gettable and they were looking at Collingwood and Brisbane and how they got to their teams. They were saying that both obviously got players through the draft to built up their team but made the point that you cannot rely on that alone to get to the big dance and win the premiership these days. You have to bring in quality established players to make it complete. Looking below you can see what the lions have got, no wonder we have no show to attract the calibre of those sorts of players, we make be lucky to get one maybe two at the most.

much easier for teams like brisbane and collingwood to look to trade in players when they get access to guys like ashcroft, fletcher and daicos for free

Mana from heaven.

Also having a guy who can consistently kick goals from 50, forces the defence to rethink and can open up pockets closer to goal.

So who from here would we have been in chats with? (Assuming that one of the Adelaide double ups are port)

Haven’t been linked to anything with any of them that I’m aware of.
