He will still have 2 to 3 years of quality left in him. We need to go all in as our window is open now.

I would prefer an A grade midfielder in the 22 to 27 age but I don’t see any being available. We need to take what we can get before our window closes, albeit slightly.

Yes. I wouldn't want to give away something of small value for something worth nothing

Plus that draft pick might actually be useful in replacing some of the guys on our list

We currently have picks 18, 41, 50 and 54 to use at the draft to replace at least Crouch, Murphy and Strachan and/or to take the minimum three selections. I don't believe we have any forced rookie elevations.

Getting pick 44 off Carlton is better than using pick 50 and who knows how much further up the draft you can get with 41 + 44 than 41 + 50

He's contracted for next year and has played 79 solid games. Yes he can't crack into the firsts of the #1 team on the ladder, but he'd be a first 22 player in a number of other lower sides.

There are loads of worse players traded each year for 3rd rounders

I'd rather be West Coast than us. Even though they are in the trenches right now, they still have the 2018 flag to fondly remember fresh in their minds.

There's probably a number of spoons that tips you over from "tactical tanking to rebuild with solid players" to "poorly run club that can't and won't win any time soon"

North's current run is definitely in the latter category. Richmond might be in the first category. West Coast teetering.

A proper rebuild only really requires 3-4 years down the bottom of the ladder and that might not even mean 4 consecutive spoons. Any longer than that, you get closer and close to club destroying territory

At his very best, Sholl isn't a best 22 player for us. At his very best, I presume Hollands would actually be a best 22 player for us.

It's sort of a Bird in the hand vs 2 in the bush scenario. I reckon we have the list depth and performance to be able to take these kinds of risks now.

I reckon Butts' performances this year have been better than Murray's. I can understand Murray holding his position, but I doubt anyone is losing any sleep worrying about him waking up with gastro.

Reidy has recently said our intention is to create the longest possible premiership window so not sure how the backloading factors into this - and in reality lets leave it as its a little hypothetical and I am sure we will all be happy starting with one flag this year

A long premiership window requires keeping your required players. Backloading is a list management tool that allows you to have more value on your list in the current year than value in the open market.

So while Xavier Lindsay, Kozzie Pickett and Harvey Langford are the future as excellent kicks, how many terrible kicks can you have in your side?

On ratings points generated from a players’ kicks, no midfielder rated lower than Viney, contracted to 2028.

Oliver did appear to cover the ground much better in the last six weeks and had four 100-ranking point games in that time.

But last year he was the 244th rated player in the AFL and this year he improved only 12 spots to 232.

Given he and Petracca are worth over $1.5m a year in the back end of their contracts, it is hard to see how other sides would believe they are of good value.

Petracca and JHF at their best are a fair bit more impactful per possession than most of those mentioned there.

Would be very keen to get a guy like Merrett in, as long as it doesn't cost us the farm. Would be a serious get and propel us further into premiership conversations.
Not against taking a punt on E Hollands too. Put strict conditions on the contract, low risk, big reward of he realises his potential here.
Less convinced on Oliver. But if Burgess has a plan for him, and can vouch for him, and if they can get the price right, I could be more interested.

Collingwood and Geelong are the only 2 VIC teams that look likely to compete for a flag in the remainder of Merretts career. St Kilda could join the chat if all this spending actually turns into on field performance (and that's a big IF in my opinion).
