2017 AFL Draft

Pick 3: Carlton - Paddy Dow
Pick 4: North Melbourne - Luke Davies-Uniacke
I was at the night noodle market that November evening and followed the top selections on the North app. I screamed when Brisbane too Rayner at 1 but when Carlton took Dow at 3 I was doing cartwheels.

Somehow, somehow we were able to draft Luke Davies-Uniacke. Kissed on the you know what

Probably should have been there quicker.
Kinda just took a while for the thread to get going .... had moments with a mad flurry of comments, then it calmed a bit, but most recently .... BOOM! The bloke is non stop comment worthy, better than sliced bread and as polite as can be, F bombs aside. This thread has kind of exploded to the top .... reminiscent of the bloke himself

Some guys can find the footy and some guys the footy finds them. LDU is the former and they are in crucial parts of the ground

Almost a transcript of Buckley on the video above:

"It’s all come together for Luke Davies-Uniacke

“One of the most influential players over the last 12 games in terms of stats and impact, Luke Davies-Uniacke.

“Clarko (Alastair Clarkson) is rapt… LDU’s performances have been through the roof.

“It’s all come together for this kid, and North Melbourne are the beneficiaries of it.

“It’s all credit to him and them for being patient enough and working through the hardship to be able to get to this point

“He’s had 30 touches in each of the first two rounds, he’s an equal handball/kick (ratio) because his contested work inside is so good. He’s had ten clearances and 11 clearances, he’s had five tackles and six tackles, so he gets to work in the harder elements of the game.

“He’s averaged five or six inside 50s a game and he’s kicked a goal a game. There’s players that are winning more footy, but there are not many players who are as impactful.

“He was in a two-win season (last year) but still took steps forward and now there’s a little bit more happening around him and we’re going to see the best of him.”

Hahaha he hasn’t even started yet, there’s going to be a game where he single handed drags us back from 50 points down.
Won't be the first time he's done it in his career. Did it for the Stingrays in a final against the Eastern Ranges.

Meanwhile, Davies-Uniacke has carried the outstanding form he showed at the back-end of last year into the 2023 season.

The 23-year-old averaged 30.4 disposals and polled eight Brownlow votes from his last eight games in 2022. There’s every chance he’s already polled six votes after his first two games this season.

“This guy is so powerful, so clean,” King said. “He loves contact, he loves being a game-breaker, he loves stepping out of traffic, he loves embarrassing you. He wants to offend, he wants to kick goals.

“This guy gets numbers and impact. He was a treat to watch on the weekend. He’s in for a big year, he’s in the prime of his football life, he’s got a coach that’s giving him a first-class ride to take care of this midfield and I just can’t wait to see where he can go.”

Montagna said Davies-Uniacke was proof some players taken early in the draft need time in the AFL system before scratching the surface of their potential.

“It’s a great lesson that some players are just a slow burn,” he said. “Not everyone is going to be Nick Daicos or Sam Walsh and be as good as they are straight away. Some need the slow burn – and he’s a perfect example of it.

“He is probably the hottest player in the competition since midway through last year.”
