News AFL overhauls Academy and FS bid matching, discussing draft lockout

I don’t think the academy has much to do with your premiership success over the past two seasons if thats where you think I’m coming from.

You’ve drafted and traded well, are well coached, and a couple of FS playing elite footy helps (not everyone has good genes!).

I’ve said this for many years, the academies need to be made even. As for how that affects the growth of the game and the engagement of talent and how to combat that I don’t know the answer. But academies should not benefit clubs differently to to each other.

One of the many problems is the AFL are between a rock and a hard place where whatever they do the, primarily, VFL clubs will continue to complain and push for abolishment.

One reason I suspect the AFL doesn’t want to fund academies is because the outcry will be that they’re funding a talent factory for Qld and NSW clubs.

The St Kilda president is on record saying they should be abolished. He couldn’t care less about the growth and future of the game, outside of what he considers is good and fair for St Kilda. The only equality he talks about is the mechanisms he thinks could be improved for St Kilda. He doesn’t care about the things which benefit the saints.

Because we have a Canadian person making our fixture that is a closet Geelong supporter.

That and the AFL love $.

Plus networks rig it for their own good, no one will tell me otherwise there.

The unwritten subtext of nearly this whole thread is we want to destroy any advantage clubs get from Academies and father/sons. Once that is destroyed we still have advantages in go home factor, free Agency and free agency compensation.
Typically these guys are only interested in the inequalities that don't advantage there own club.

Things are all beer and skittles when you're raping the northern states lists but the minute THEY have a competitive edge you just want to smash it to pieces.

Yes. They basically want a return to the time when the Northern clubs, particularly Brisbane, GCS and GWS were academies for the VFL clubs, unable to attract talent and tethered to the bottom of the ladder.

I fondly remember a Brisbane v Hawthorn game when Bruce said that Brisbane is just a feeder club for the Victorians.

New nga rules - interesting that it mentions Cochrane will be assessed under the current nga rules. To me that bodes well for port Adelaide’s bid to have priority access of him

Any current NGA player who has been identified by a club should be assessed under the current rules.

Anyone identified after whatever date these new rules start can be processed under the new rules.

Yep and work the draw back from there, how we have our draws so bad I'll never know. I agree on GC they probably should get two in the last 10 rounds
I think any side that made finals the season before should be given atleast three. As long as they play the Grand Final at the MCG they need to do everything they can to level the playing field as much as possible and it shouldn’t even be that difficult

In my opinion the rule changes don't go far enough but I can cop that, as long as the matching rules also don't go far enough.

I've searched everywhere but I still can't find a definitive list of what countries are eligible. The new article says European countries aren't eligible anymore, does that seriously include Iceland, Moldova etc? Whereas, Pacific islands like Fiji are now eligible?

The system is definitely better but there needs to be a black out of the first 4 picks

Why the first four? I don’t think your president would agree with that given the Saints have been floating mid-table.

Leave the academies and F/S as they are. They're fine.

Leave the bidding as it is. It's a good system that establishes market value.

Simply fix the ridiculous matching system. It's a rort. Clubs actively trading out of the draft so they can get the gun kids for next to nothing. Obviously there's a major problem with the system when clubs are so obviously using a loophole.

Fix that to ensure the draft retains fairness.

Then all will be fine.

Agree, and at least 1 in the last 10 rounds.

The teams that finish bottom 4 are most in need of assistance they should be able to pick any player they wish. I don’t think it’s good for the competition to have clubs stuck on the bottom for multiple seasons struggling with how compromised the draft has become we are fast heading towards a English premier league type competition were the same clubs will dominate every year. We are about to have the premier pick the best player in the draft it’s just a terribly bad system

Clubs that finish bottom 4 routinely can’t pick best available because certain prospects refuse to leave their state. This is especially pronounced for Northern clubs where limited top end talent comes through the draft.

The draft is not an open draft and is significantly compromised for some clubs, for different reasons.

My only issue with eligibility is that (from a Port Adelaide point of view so I'm more aware) I think the David Rodan sons will still qualify for NGA so their attempt at making it tougher, so kids with any AFL background aren't included in NGA has failed at the first hurdle.

The black out is a joke whether 4, 10, 18 its an arbitrary number and just make the gaining team pay full point price plain and easy.

The new system is still a rort.

4 middle second rounds picks equals pick 1-3 is bs.

No troubles mate they’re changing it next year. 2026 is the perfect time for some change.

Even then it’s a rort.

I always look at the historical pick swaps. The team trading up tend to pay 25-50% more points under the old system.

The New system hasn’t reduce the points by 25-50%.
This year is an issue still but that’s been recognised with further changes for next year.

If they remove the discount and it takes 2 picks to match a bid at pick 1. It’s going to impact what’s possible for matching clubs.

Still not what I want. But I’ll admit it’s better

There is a chance the AFL walk back the proposed 2026 changes.
