Add West Coast who look to be ready to clean house we are still going to have a couple of teams that are fringe afl standard and very vulnerable to injuries.

Same could be said for just about any draft assistance. Another reason why draft assistance is dumb.
Surely the AFL know this though. I wonder whether they just do it to give the club a bit of a sugar hit and retain a bit of supporter interest by selling hope when all looks pretty gloomy.

Probably limited to what they can do other than thru the draft. Even a bigger cap..will not alwasy get you the best players. The afl is not the nba ..you need a big group of players to have an impact... and they probably do not choose to go to North if they look years away. So drafy it is .. because kids get forced to go where they are picked.

Secondly, you didn't lose out on any talent in any of those situations, because you never had access to Walter, Ashcroft or JUH. They were never part of the open draft pool, whether they were bid on before or after your pick, you still had access to the 2nd best prospect in the open draft pool.

Isn't that the point the other poster is making though, that they've lost out on talent because they didn't get access to some of the most talented kids in the draft? I've agreed with pretty much everything else said here, but it's undeniable that the academies/FS deprive other clubs of that talent by restricting the open draft pool

Pick 3 is a compo pick and would have likely been available regardless.

Hawthorn wouldn't likely be picking Sanders at 3/4, so what's the issue?

FA compo? I can't seem to remember there being outrage when you were able to select Reid and Cox from the Danniher compo (Pick 7).

Or Pick 10 for Zac Williams?

Front or back ending the contract isn’t the problem. It’s doing it to give extra compensation to get around pick matching.

The AFL should just make it a player needs at least a 5 year contract to get band 1.

I still think FA compensation needs to be a thing. Just with tightened rules to prevent any funny business.

The club that has the choice to match will always want the best comp. The destination club often is willing to pay more to avoid paying an draft collateral. You can adjust the rules ... and the affect might be that no one gets band one ... and in taht case every club matchs. Geelong and Cameron for example ..ist still did not matter as GWS knew tehy would get more form the trade than the comp. So its mainly an issue when a team is on the bottom and will get early draft comp.

I do not like comp but understand why its needed. It often affects the whole concept of FA .. where clubs trade for players to ensure it doesn't affect their compensation. Be far cleaner if there were no RFA. Its just FA. No matching... and no one gets R1 comp.

I think it’s going to be a bad look if North don’t match any offer on McKay.

If they don’t match what reason would they have? They need key backs and will be more competitive in 2024 with him on the list.

The AFL will see North arnt even trying to be competitive with the Tin can out if they don’t try match any offers on McKay and I think it could impact decisions around compo. Why help a team who isn’t helping themself.

GWS going just fine. A draft haul like Franklin/Roughead/Lewis is what the Eagles need, to go with the new coach.

Coming from a club that's going to benefit from a spine of JUH/Darcy/Croft for the next decade, I think the academies and current bidding systems are a joke.

But ditching the father son entirely removes one of the magical things about this game. Clubs shouldn't get a discount for bidding on a F/S and be able to pay for a highly rated youngster with a bunch of third round picks they traded down for, but a balance can be found without eroding the proud history and traditions of the game.

There is simply no question that the draft is heavily compromised.
The biggest scandal is the suns taking 3 of the top 15 talents into their list via points matching. No one seems to be talking about that however.

I would love to see a completely and totally uncompromised draft for 10 years without any academy’s or FS picks.

Tough. It’s a price well and truly worth paying for an uncompromised draft. A minor loss to the game in exchange for a major benefit for equalisation.

The father-son rule exists to benefit Victorian clubs and clubs that relocated from Victoria (Weagles jagged a few because of course they did).
The northern academies exist to benefit clubs in non-traditional football states.
A couple of clubs benefit from both.

This is your 2nd terrible season. We got crappy assistance at the end of our 3rd terrible season.

You may get a couple of late picks that you must trade at the end of next year if you have another shocking year.

You should be hoping we get something good this year which will open the door for the Eagles at the end of 2025 if you’re still woeful.
