News AFL overhauls Academy and FS bid matching, discussing draft lockout

I was personally ok with a full first round lock anyway but my main concern was the price paid still being ridiculous AND top of the ladder teams getting way too access to the top of the draft. Sounds like they've addressed both which is fantastic

Academies would cease to exist if there was a lockout. We aren’t doing the work and pouring in the cash if there’s no access.

This is actually the fairest way and it’s now time to leave it alone for a decade

No they wouldn't as it was only 1st round lock-out proposal (1st 18-20 picks), not the whole draft. This is the system everyone else use to run with except the North academies yet they still did them so your logic is flawed.

First thoughts are the changes seem okay, maybe a little bit too far. Will need to see how the pick points values changes, if at all. Main thing is it makes teams pay a proper price for elite talent.

Again why put in the effort if all you get out of it are the scraps. You put in the effort for A grade talents. The AFL weren’t going to run them have to put in millions again nit when Tassie may now cost double.

This new system is fair and it’s a compromise so I hope they leave it for a decade now

Because every advantage in the AFL is still an advantage. In a competition of such tight margins, it can be the difference in winning a flag and just making the GF. You don't give they up and the AFL changes rules so much that they probably shift again later.

Having a James Rose every 5 years is no advantage mate.

It’s hard enough being a club outside AFL mad areas let alone adding to it with more go home players.

My heart bleeds for your team and disadvantages you get. Only playing in 7 GF's in the past 20 seasons for 2 flags and missing finals roughly 3-4 times. It must be really tough.

Greg Swan after the Lions etc got all their guns for a bunch of 3rd and 4th round picks now he's basically making clubs use two first round selections for one player. What a bunch of ameatures.

Just talk to Cody Walker and make him tank the draft year. He's keen on getting to you so I think he'll do whatever it takes. No one can control what he decides to do.

League has made an absolute meal out of this. They simply had to give more notice before changes were implemented so clubs had time to prepare and inform list strategy.

After watching other clubs ream the draft for years, Carlton suddenly pays a huge premium for the same benefit, despite Walker nominating under the old system

Well that should have been done years ago inclusive of the DVI restructure.

The manipulation of the draft with picks in the 30 & 40's to access a top 4 draft player over several years was a very obvious rort yet nothing was sone until the Gold Coast situation a couple of years ago

And even then, they waited an extra year as Carlton and Richmond had traded in those 30 to 40 picks as they were useful and didn't want their draft strategy compromised

Yeah, imagine if they'd have done this for this year like they should have. Would completely change this offseason
