Are Carlton a lock for the wooden spoon?

Carlton should trade it for more picks, players or a combination of the two.

But certainly not the kind of players Carey was referring to.....

Those three could transform Carlton's VFL side.

Carlton should be doing everything in its power to avoid another wooden spoon.

Wait for next flag after spoon:

A couple of points to note are
- the process to return to the top is, typically, at least a decade long
- the two clubs to subvert the process, North 1972 and Brisbane 1998, benefited from short-lived rules

Draft picks are overrated. Why risk drafting a bust when you can get three s**t trucks for the same price?

I have often thought this as well. I think trading is very much underrated as you can get a good quality player for a second round draft pick and that player is almost guaranteed to be in your best 22, something you can't guarantee if you use a second round draft pick in the draft.

Filling up with C grade players will get you competitive but it won't get you to a grand final, so what's the point?
Great point.

Which is what confuses me about Carlton supporters' perception of the Judd era.

From their perspective, that era was a success given they played in a few finals without ever contending for a premiership, simply because they came from such a low base.

A lock for the spoon and nervous about what to do with pick 1.

Now I'll tell you what's very wrong about the salary cap and why the AFL isn't helping bottom clubs with their rules.

Clubs like Richmond, Geelong with a heap of stars, Swans with Buddy plus, GWS with a squillion high picks on their list are paying roughly $13.5 mill.

Carlton full of spuds, or Melbourne in the Neeld era are/were paying that list of spuds $12.8 mill.

So the difference between a list of stars who are performing and a list of non performing potatoes is just $700k!

It means most of Carlton's list is massively overpaid and it's only a modest "War Chest" available to lure stars. Have I got this right?

Dunno about that (C grade/recycled players getting you competitive) if our experience is anything to go by!

Eh? You must know some strange Carlton supporters. We haven't had a successful era since the 90s.

You're definitely confused, I haven't heard one Carlton supporter say that era was a success. They say the Judd trade was a success, which I think they are probably right and it was a win-win.

I have debated ad nauseum with Carlton supporters on this forum about the success (or otherwise) of the Judd era.

Your view is in the minority based on the people I know personally and others who post on BigFooty.

Think you might be confusing 'success' of the footy club with the Judd trade being a positive/right move.

So by throwing all of their eggs in one basket (Judd), how can they on one hand say the trade was a success but his era wasn't?

Pretty easily actually. We were down to deciding between Fev and Nick Stevens for captain before that trade.

Yeah this is a serious issue. We circumvent this issue by paying food coin to the likes of Wright, Lobbe, Jones and the like. The AFL need to ensure clubs can pay less money when times are tough.

Jesus. Carey has lost it.

If I’m Carlton, I’m certainly looking at a deal where I can turn pick one into 8,9 and 13 from Adelaide.

I’m securing a Sloane, Gaff or Dahlhaus. They must surely have the money.

And I’m going after a Whitecross type. Someone that knows what it takes and comes from a club with good culture.

In: Sloane, Dahlhaus, Whitecross and 3 kids for example: Hately, Caldwell and Valente.

Carlton’s problems come from seriously poor management. Espicially in the list department.

Sloane at 28/29 is probably the wrong age to be throwing a long contract at. Yes to Gaff or Dahlhaus, and to trading #1 for 2-3 good picks. Massive no to trading good picks for (more) fringe players!

Pick 1 is greatly overrated for mine. For example using the picks 8,9 and 13 I was alluding too.

2010:

Pick 1: David Swallow
Pick 8,9,13: Dyson Heppell, Dion Prestia, Seb Tab(No longer playing)

2011:

Pick 1: Johnathon Patton
Pick 8,9,13: Billy Longer, Adam Tomlinson and Taylor Adams.

2012:

Pick 1: Lachie Whitfield
Pick 8,9,13: Sam Mayes, Nick Vlastuin, Jesse Lonergan

2013:

Pick 1: Thomas Boyd
Pick 8,9,13: Luke McDonald, Christian Salem and Patrick Cripps

2014:

Pick 1: Patrick McCartin
Pick 8,9,13: Peter Wright, Darcy Moore and Lachlan Weller.

Probably need to wait a bit longer before going near the other drafts.

I didn’t suggest they trade for anymore fringe players. Someone like Whitecross would have a good impact there at Carlton like Hodge has for us.

They need to remove SOS.

16, the fact there is so many people out there who avidly hate us proves my point.

Ah yes, 16 flags and all that. Because those 16 flags are saving you from being a laughing stock now hey? Making you feel better that right now avoiding the bottom four is a good season?

What good is success long before many footballer watchers now can consciously remember?

If you aren't 1st, you are last. Your acceptance of mediocrity is why your club has 2 flags in 100 years.

Just so you know, we could care less what any of you think so do yourself a favour and save it for someone who cares.

I was of the belief this is a fan forum. The idea being we get to share our thoughts on all things AFL, including Carlton and the state they are in. If you don’t like reading it and you have a problem, then it’s your problem.
