Aus A squad Ashes camp in NZ

In form? He scored 0, 2 and 0 in India..
And a 50, an 80, an unbeaten 100 and an unbeaten double 100 in the handful of FC matches prior to that... Averaging 60 in FC cricket since this time last year. A few failures on s**t pitches in India doesn't change the fact he has been scoring plenty of runs. Kind of weird how much you seem to hate him.

Throw in the fact he was batting in the middle order in India and it's a veritable s**t sandwich they threw at him.

No mistake, he was poor in India, but we don't go there for another four years so they shouldn't hold it against him.

Pity Travis Head wasn't afforded the same luxury?

Been busy BGman big weekend for me

good to see the lads going well

Any reason why Wyllie opened and not Ward ??...seems strange to me as Ward opens for Tassie and Wyllie bats three for WA ?

Good chance to try something in a game where nothing is at stake, perhaps?

Renshaw brings up his century. CA need to now bite the bullet re Warner. Renners is in form and has a good record in England county. Ward in a return to form with a composed 75.
I presume they will pick Khawaja and Warner for the ashes squad.(Would leave Warner out though)Renshaw would be in front of Harris right now for the 3rd opener I would think.

NZ A cruising at present, sun is out, flat deck, think McSweeney may of shot himself in the foot with that generous declaration. Pity Rocchiccioli wasn't in the squad. Game on as they say

Yep, still it has kept interest in the match as had we declared later chances are the Kiwis would have shut up shop viewing the target as a bridge too far. Good luck if the Kiwis do get up as that may tell the selectors they boo booed choosing a rookie captain.
The actual result of the match could not be more meaningless. The declaration was correctly made to test both sets of players in a gettable run chase.

little bit harsh sending the youngest member out there to face the new pill
You and I both know if you bat #3 you have to be ready to virtually open on occasions. Technically Wyllie was fine facing the new pill, apart from one or two rash shots, obviously due to nerves, he seemed comfortable until he flashed wildly at that wide shortie in T20 mode. There was simply no reason to play at it at that time of the game as all it did was gift the Kiwis his wicket and make them think he will be an easy target next time.

Yeah agree but there is a difference as a specialist opener and a number three

Just seems strange to me why you would not of opened with Ward who bats there... but as you said before looking for that L/R combo at the top

so I think it was a little bit harsh for teague

If CA had in mind that this match was going to be a massive challenge for a technique given the pitch, conditions and ball were supposed to replicate what to expect in England at Ashes time, they will be disappointed. As the match has produced nothing near English conditions which clearly favor the ball. The bowlers have had to really bend their backs to get any life out of it and even with the use of the English Dukes there has been only minimal swing and seam. So CA so far your plan to use these games as an Ashes camp has failed miserably. So what of the good batting performances from Renshaw, Ward, McSweeney and bowling from Johnson, Agar, Bartlett will they be viewed as productive or waived off as of no consequence towards any Ashes consideration..

Not a lot as #3 is also a specialist spot with the best bat in the team usually taking the spot. So to be offered what many say is the hardest batting gig in cricket at the tender age of 18, speaks volumes for what WACA head honchos must think of Wyllie. CA probably noted this and determined then that he should be able to handle opening. Besides the kid himself is on record as saying that the earlier he bats the better as he hates waiting around. You cant get any earlier than opening. Perhaps he asked to open.

The Kiwis look like getting these winning runs and well deserved as a result is better than a boring draw. All the same the Aussie boys can be pleased with their efforts, given most bats and the pace attack are inexperienced at international level.

Hope the second game provides a touch more of a stirring contest between bat and ball for the entire four days tho.

Been busy travelling and weighing up job offers so didn't follow this. How did Johnson get on in the second dig? 4 in the first.

Fair play to Agar in the first innings after I said Kelly should be ahead of him. Glad to see Tim Ward doing well. Hope he can double up.

No luck in the second toiled hard on a dead last day deck. He and the other quicks beat bat often with nicks not finding a catcher. I had Bartlett as our best quick for the match, built pressure with his metronomic accuracy in the first and topped the wicket tally yesterday with the game to be won. The lifeless deck and Dukes ball last two days spoiled a good contest when it was supposed to produce a thrilling one. Organisers had better dish up a more challenging one next match otherwise CA Ashes Camp plans will have been a total disaster.

Same here, bounced back in an important game for his career after a poor end to the Shield season. His old temperament was back. He has always had the technique and application but he lost his patience after BBL. Probably too much white ball creating bad habits.

New Zealand A vs Australia A, 2nd unofficial Test
Bert Sutcliffe Oval, Lincoln

CA called this two match tour an Ashes Camp so obviously it wanted to closely scrutinize any stand out performances in similar conditions to what is found in England in June. If they were fair dinkum then surely a handful of blokes are now in the frame for an Ashes or WTC reserve spot if they happen to follow up in the second match.
Only 3 I can genuinely see been a chance of making the squad are Renshaw, Hardie and perhaps Peirson depending on how deep the squad is. The other guys that are any chance of making the squad are playing county cricket. This A series is nothing more than a development tour for the majority of the side imo.

Renshaw, Hardie and perhaps Peirson
Adding Tim Ward, a pair of 70s and imo he'd have tonned up in second had there not been a pending declaration. Has a chance to further push his claims this week. He may be a specialist opener to date but is proving his versatility this series. Batted in the vital #3 first game, #4 this one.

One or two odd selections for the second match with Jimmy Peirson gone walkabout for some unknown reason replaced by 'ring in' Josh Philippe. Good to see CA has the West Aussie keeper/batsman in their future plans. I think this bloke is super talented but needs to be more attentive with his first 50 balls. Once in he can be dynamite. I'd have figured the balance of a leftie in our attack would have been the way to go, yet Spencer Johnson has been omitted? He was the one bowler that really troubled the Kiwis first innings last match imo with his unexpected pace and bounce.

Like who. Bancroft, Handscomb? Both have poor records on Pommie decks which should be a prime consideration if picking an Ashes side over there. Harris the only one of the three likelies has a fab Eng County record. As much as it pains me to say this given his poor Test record, I have him to open ahead of Warner.

Teague Wyllie at six certainly might do him better than opening or three. I see Logan van Beek has switched allegiances from the Netherlands to NZ.
