Brown to debut...

Was his second season at North.

As for Brown, I thought he offered a fair bit more at ground level than Daw, who seems to get pushed off the ball very easily for his size. I think he did enough to keep his spot next week.
I thought BB was suffering from that same affliction TBH.

I reckon what surprised me most about Brown, and some of this is from watching his Werribee porno music clip is that you expect him to lumber around like Drew does, or Goldy does - but he moves more like Black.

His awareness and repeat leading is good, and it's clear he is useful in the ruck. Tarrant, **** I don't know. I don't know which one works best.

I think of Brown, if he can get it together, as more of a Drew replacement than anyone else.

Definitely keeps his spot.

Is Daw the reason the inside 50's are so shit? I'm not blaming maj but it seems when he's in the team everybody else bombs it high and long thinking "it's cool maj will leap and mark it". If he played today with the team thinking before kicking long he may also have had a big day out.

Daw doesn't have game sense. He doesn't present with constant leads, dragging his opponent away from his fellow forwards, and creating space in the forward line. Often the long bomb in is because it's pointless picking off a pass when there's just a big cluster of players. That's what Tarrant, and Brown today can offer that Daw doesn't, and overall makes the forward line work much better.

Very good first up effort IMO. He'll only improve with time, additional strength work, experience and confidence.

Post Drew we may well see both he AND Maj holding down the two main KPF spots.

Good start Benny boy! :thumbsu:

Leading was so good today. There was a bit of play in that last quarter which showed how far Maj has to go compared to Brown. It was on the camera side of the ground, Benny lead up, got ignored, ran back and then double backed and got a little chip kick on the lead near the boundary.

You'd never see Maj be able to work an opponent over like that and that's the one thing he needs to work on for mine. Too often he leads towards where Drew is standing. I thought Brown was good in allowing Drew to be one out a number of times tonight

Ziebell's goal and Greenwood's second were both a result of Brown competing again when the ball hit the deck. I like Maj but he doesn't offer anything once it goes to ground.
The limited video I've seen of him reminds me of McKernan.

It was a great moment when he snagged his first ever goal. The North crowd AND players were all pumped and rapt for the bloke. Loved the crowd noise rising every time he neared the ball also.

Impressive debut from The Sideshow.

I hope he gets a decent crack so we can see what he's got to offer at AFL level.

Looks like a forward, definitely better sense than Majak and looks like a better marking option than Tarrant. Maybe doesn't offer as much in ruck as Majak but still does ok.

It be interesting to see how that would work.

Maj, Sideshow, Black in the one forward line.

If Lachie is out we may see it happen sooner rather than later.

Send Dish to CHB.

Liked the twisting and turning he did in the last under pressure. That was immense for his confidence. So far, he has done well. Only got to see the last so I don't know what happening before except for his first goal.

^^^^^^^^^^^^ Yep this.

I thought the other good thing was he loves to compete and throw himself around. Sadly that's the exact thing people wanted Majak to do

but he was unable to comprehend that or put that exact thing in practice.

Led well, competed well and followed up well when the ball hit the ground. Ruck work was ok - I'm no expert, but while it looked much less spectacular than Majak's, it didn't look worse than Drew's.

Majak looks much more threatening, and I feel like defenders would worry more about him, but in practice he hasn't seemed any more able to mark in contests than Brown was yesterday, i.e. not very, unless it's positioned perfectly. They both need a lot of work - the advantage of Sideshow is that he looks like a better option for giving Black and Petrie the space to play well.

Having said all that, the delivery and intelligence going forward yesterday was so much better than it has been most of the season, it's hard to say how much of the improvement in F50 was down to the different structure.

Overall, a pretty decent first game. Obviously needs to work on his strength, but he has the footy smarts to compensate for the time being.

I was most impressed with his ability to contest the ball in the air (while being outmuscled), bring the ball to the ground and then follow up. Had a hand in a few goals by doing that.

I agree with Pykie that a preseason or two of real strength work will greatly benefit him considering his athletic capabilities. He looked much more capable at AFL level than I had hoped really so I look forward to watching his development.

The point to the sky for his grandfather has some serious Tim Tebow / David Ortiz potential as a celebration. He should keep it - same with the #50.

How many teams (Bulldogs, Lions, Saints, Blues, even Freo) are desperate for another key forward and didn't take a punt on this guy in the 30s or 40s in the draft? Inspired decision by the recruiters, recognising that Petrie is near the end and Daw is still only a prospect and we will need a 2nd ruck / KPF in the future to support Goldy. Great job.

I love the fact that we're developing a speculative KPF that can actually kick too.

Yeah I just checked out his VFL highlights. He's got a ridiculously long run up and the way he bounces the ball up and down in his hands is weird, but it seems to be very effective. Boomer said on Fox last night that he's one of the best kicks at the club.

Yeah, flies straight as an arrow off his boot.
