Yeah, I know I support the club mainly for player retention.
Are you intentionally being infuriating?? He didn't say that player retention was the be all and end all. Just that we have been good at it.

He was clearly referring to recruiting and retaining players.
They lost the best forward in the league.

They won the flag the next year.

They're widely considered the favourite for the flag this year.

We signed a couple of blokes who have shifted us marginally closer to a flag.

We also signed up a bloke until 2017, who we apparently no longer want.

Not all that shimmers is gold.

Keeping our best players. Even the mighty Hawks fall short.

I'm sure their flag will keep them warm when the coldness of Buddy leaving kicks in.

Yeah they won 2 finals just inspite of Scott. That showed him he is not wanted.

I was more referring to the fairly regular ten goal beltings, the complacency and poor quarters every week and the infuriating inconsistency.

Swap Clarkson and Scott and we would be on the way to a 3 peat?

Players stay and join our club because of Scott.

You're probably doing the rest of the coaching and development staff a bit of a disservice there.

Regardless, the end goal is the win flags. Until we improve in a number of key areas, player retention and free agency isn't going to get us there.

We have just won 5 in a row.

Dam Scott and those inconsistant complacent players. It's so regular that we won 5 regular games in a row.

I think we'd be more consistent and closer to a flag.

You don't believe we have the cattle for that, I believe the idea of not having the cattle is frogshit.

We lost to 18th by 10 goals.

Riiighhtttttt - everything good is the other coaches and development staff - everything bad is Scott's fault.

What a crap post.

Insightful Spider, IMO Brad Scott is full of shit and there's plenty around lapping it up. Time as they say will tell, happy to be made look a fool if I'm wrong. But finishing in the bottom end of the eight isn't a celebration especially with the aging list we have.

Geelong was a good win. The other four wins were against bottom five sides - obviously you still have to win them and we have done so, but given we were 6-7 going into this run of easier fixtures, we're still not a guarantee of playing finals.

Even within this run of wins has been the propensity to switch off or drop intensity (2nd against Brisbane, 2nd against Carlton, 2nd and 3rd against Melbourne, 1st half against *Essendon). This has been happening throughout Scott's tenure, which suggests players don't take the right mindset into games/quarters.

But please, continue to reduce the debate to cherry-picking stats and spitting out cliches. All the most insightful posts in this thread have gone unanswered by yourself, Phillyroo and kelman anyway.

I want to be as optimistic as Wild Bill and philly, I really do, but how can anyone (even those blinded by love, as I am partially) deny the problem of total drop-offs in quarters. We get away with it against below average sides - because we do have the cattle - but above average sides take advantage of the drop-offs and beat us. We are likely to make the finals now, but God help us if we turn off for a quarter in finals. This is why people remain skeptical of the coach, in all these years he's failed to make us a 4 quarter team. He and other insiders have, to their credit, put together a very good list - one that would appear capable to go all the way if we could stop the mental lapses. But we have proven, as recently as last week, that we are powerless to stop the mental lapses.

Well if we get rid of scott who do we chase Clarkson won't come same for Longmire and Simpson and none of our Assistents are upto it if there were they be coaching a Leauge team somewhere else we need an outsider a Brendon Bolton a Stewart Dew type but knowing our club Scott will be there next year and same goes for the rest of the boys club

We are mental giants sometimes.

Even if we dig ourselves out of the hole we're in currently in Tassie, the fact they're completely out playing us is just not good enough and it just happens too often.

We are mentally soft.

Irrespective if we come back and win this game against the Saints, I dread the humiliation of finals footy.
Finals footy who ever we play will smash us of the ball park with our regular 2nd quarter fade outs.
If the players are struggling now with pressure with poor disposals then look out come September.

I don't know, I was quite a fan of the fade out in the first half of the Essendon final last year. Made the end result that much better. :D
