We’re fielding 17-18 AFL listed players on Sunday including Jack Williams and Callum Jamieson, three WAFL top ups, an assistant coach and whichever member of the Victorian cheer squad finds the post-it note stuck to the bottom of their seat.

I assumed Jamieson wasn't available when Giro and Mountford were named ahead of him on the extended bench.

I'd love to see him play though

Okay even without the Covid protocols we were almost certain of not being in the GF. Now it's even less likely.

So let's get into the left field. We completely forget about 2022 and solely focus on 2023. We give our great players a light year given most are getting on a bit and just play every fringe player. Why burn out our ageing champs in a meaningless year?

For example, rest NN for the year. Then by years end we know who out of BWilliams, Jamieson and Strdnica will be our no 2 ruck next year. JK rests for the year as does Hurn (or they retire). Yeo etc take a few months off to be 100%. And the other champs play say 10 games for the season just to keep some touch and to mentor the kids. Sure we end up getting belted week in week out (and so get good draft picks) but by the start of next year we have an excellent idea of whether HEdwards, LEdwards, Trew, XON, West, Naish, Joyce, Langdon, Petro etc etc etc are really up to it. And hopefully give our champs a bit more spring in their step.

I can hear the cavalry coming - full of criticism. But, supporters easily accept their team won't be in the GF when they are 'rebuilding'. My idea is just to take this one big step further. Is there any rule that says we have to play our best available 22 each week? I can't imagine the AFL saying you must select e.g. NN.

Unlike supporters of some (lesser) clubs I only want to win GFs. Let's be a bit creative about this.

Bringing in our captain and 3 other all Australians (kelly, Ryan darling). The rest is virtually like for like. We’ve got a full back and CHB that are quality, the rest of our back line holds up, midfield is strengthened compared to last week, key forwards slightly weekend - but Play Ryan at FF and darling CHF. No real excuses not to win, WAFL top up players should be better than 18-20 year olds. Losing winder as a sub doesn’t make a difference I tell you.

Shame we didn’t get the best of the best from the WAFL top ups. If we were bringing in jye Bolton and other AFL ready bodies would be even better.

Players, coaches and board wouldn’t allow it, especially if you tank it’s considered illegal. More of an option later in the season when little niggles can put you out for the season. This years draft cohort doesn’t look too bad though….

Reportedly 12 changes to last week’s team, including four top ups, some of whom haven’t even trained with the club as of today, 36 hours from the bounce.

But hey we’ve got Kelly back so honestly anything we raise now is just a really poor excuse.
