Opinion Changes for Round 2 vs The Blues

Those cocky blues supporters are back after again after one win. If we only won one game in a season I would pick the blues game every time. I have had hatred of this team since the 70's because of their cocky players, administrators and supporters. Hope I not hearing their theme song after the siren rings.

In: JJ, Smith, O’Brien, Sweet, AJ
Out: Hannan, Roarke, Gardener, Cordy, Scott

We all seem to agree on these.

Why are we all so far off the mark???

A lot of players we are dying for to come back into the side, some players need to find some form. I don’t think we’re too far off our very best from the following years with all that clicking together.

I’m just excited for JUH to get a game, match experience is huge. Which is the only explanation I would have as to why some players aren’t out and Williams who has played some amazing footy in the past is out pretty swiftly, just expect better from him.

Let’s get this W lads.

Trying to think who is worse Essendon or Carlton fans

So you get punished for one bad game ?

They aren’t the first and won’t be the last.

Players can’t play knowing one bad game and they are dropped

Hannan and Weightman combined for half a tackle speaks volumes to mindset. Dropping them would have been preferable and a bigger statement especially about bringing non negotiables to the table.

I see dropping Williams especially as almost play conservative footy.
Smith was horrific against Melbourne, not only last week but also in hte GF. He needs to get form. Cannot rely on players who sh@t their pants in big games. Good call mc.

Losing Smith to injury hurts.

Williams had a bad game last week but I think he should have had more than enough credits in the bank to maintain his place compared to others with pretty meagre account balances. Will miss his ability to kick long coming out of defence, and hope he comes back in to the side quickly

Schache was always a likely out as he had a shocker but he also has a fair bit of potential upside. I wouldn't have minded keeping him in as a forward, and pushing Cordy back to his regular CHB spot.

Happy to see Scott, Duryea and Ugle-Hagan come in although would have preferred they replaced VDM, R. Smith and Weightman respectively. I hope that trio has at the very least been given some serious feedback regarding last week's performances because they all really need to lift.

On the bright side, despite a lot of mistakes last week we were still within striking distance of the Dees well into the last quarter.
Let's hope we can get our mojo back and give a better account of ourselves tomorrow night.

Ummm, this is just wrong. Cordy played forward a lot through 2016
This is correct. We brought both Hamling and Cordy into the team in R19 vs. Geelong in 2016, played Hamling forward and Cordy down back for the first half, before swapping them at half time or early in the second half, and they stayed in that role . They replaced Dale Morris and Jack Redpath, and that was the game we lost Macrae and Libba to injury, so Morris came back in and those two kept heir sports.

Not much into sliding doors or anything, but it's pretty interesting moment for Cordy to look back on. He was one of three young players, given our injuries, that we called into the team for multiple games to late in the Home and Away season - Lukas Webb, Nathan Hrovat being the other two. Not many would have nominated Cordy at the time the one to still be on an AFL list six years later.

Also the original post about "understanding Beveridge's selections in the lead up to the 2016 finals series" makes little sense given how injury hit we were throughout the year. For example, our Round 20, 2016 team, missed several players that played in the R1 and R2 games of that year which is still the best footy I've ever seen us play across a two-week patch - namely, Bob Murphy, Jack Macrae, Koby Stevens, Tom Liberatore, Mitch Wallis, Matt Suckling, and Marcus Adams, so 7 injured outs from that game, on top of Jack Redpath who later did his knee that season. Dale Morris missed Rounds 19, 21 and 22. We had Stringer out for Rounds 22 and 23. Our Round 1 and Round 2 selections made sense. Our late 2015 and 2016 selections was praying that Libba and Macrae could recover their injuries at time, and picking whatever players would stick. It's why our flag is held in such high regard by us and others.

Mitch Wallis or do you mean Mitch Hahn ..
I do not exactly think of Wallis as a physical presence is what I’m getting at.

This are some similarities between the two, and Wallis certainly has a bit more body strength than many of our current side. Too many of our boys were too easily pushed off the ball last week. He may not be particularly tall but he is no push over.

Can’t help but think Bailey Williams would’ve been the perfect matchup for Charlie Curnow.

Reminder, last time he played us (His 7th last game of AFL footy… in 2019) he kicked 7 v us.

This might seem a bit left field to suggest but we might be better off without Naughton in the forward line. We’ve become so predictable and one dimensional with him there I think it’s become a real negative.
For a team that made the GF I can’t believe how few options we have to run through there but at a pinch I’d say Bailey Dale and Weightman playing deep could make sense. Dale has proved he’s a pretty deadly option forward.

I reckon Geelong should swap Hawkins and Stewart around too. The options are fairly clear Sweet JUH/Bruce (When fit) up forward, Richards, TOB down back and Dunkley/English getting more midfield time over Libba/Stef

Don’t mind the Dale forward suggestion. Especially if Ed continues his good run of form.

Roarke? In the GF he was probably in our top 5.
He was terrible in the first half last week but improved in the second half. The players love him though so he must be playing his role.

Think they'll send Cordy to McGovern?
McGovern played back last week.
I'd guess Cordy plays back at times on Curnow, Gardner takes de Koning when he's down there and Keath gets first crack at McKay.
If Cordy plays relief ruck, Crozier plays tall for the chop-out minutes and takes Curnow.

I suspect we'll hand off McKay to Gardner when McKay leads high and try and get Keath to hold position deep as much as possible.
