Would like to see Wells come in if he plays well in the VFL.

In Cox Wells Varcoe
Out Adams Reid Thomas

There's no VFL for us this week so selection will be made on the basis of last week's VFL form and training.

I was one calling for a JT rest last week, but I actually thought he was better last night, I wouldn't be dropping him.

Aish in for Adams

I need some thinking music for the Cox/Reid conundrum

We are not going in with 3 tall forwards.
It’s not our style.

Personally I’d like to look at Reid again so Cox should miss another week.

Adams obviously injured.
Varcoe will be in line for a recall.

Varcoe in for Adams. Cox to miss another week.

There were quite a few of our forward pack situations this week where the opposition all went up and spoiled each other while our small forwards stayed down and took advantage of it. I can’t imagine our opposition would let us get away with that two weeks in a row.

Last year Thomas seemed to be able to take every half chance he was getting around goal. This year he seems to be unable to snag any of those half chances.
You didn’t like the check-side against the Bloopers last week?

I don’t think our forward line missed Varcoe at all to be honest. I love Varcoe but I don’t think we missed him last night, the 3 smaller forwards laid 10 tackles and Callum brown 7. The “Pressure” was fine without him.

I’m guessing the 3 talls is going to get trialed. Had we signed Lynch or another tall forward i think the 3 tall forwardline would have been trialed so i’m not against seeing how it goes.

Carlton play a tall backline so will have Jones/Weitering for Reid/Cox, then they have two 192/193 type defenders(Plowman&Marchbank) im assuming will man De Goey/Mihocek.

My guess is Mihocek will get pushed up the field to try take marks on Plowman.
Then at times when Cox is rucking and Mihocek is upfield Reid will be the only tall up forward besides De Goey.

Reid almost kicked a bag playing as the second ruckman, if Cox rucking allows him to play 100% forward and hit the scoreboard im all for it.

I don’t think many in this forum understand that you don’t just randomly pick four players and say “oh, I think they sound good to include” or “we can’t drop him because we will hurt his feelings”. Part of being a formidable side is competition for spots.

Suggestions of Daicos are absurd based on what he has dished up in the VFL, for example, while I don’t know why you’d bring in Varcoe after he has been dropped for poor form and hasn’t played a VFL game to try to discover some form. In addition to that, Sier is not in the picture at the moment as much as some people have a love affair with him. Wells isn’t quite there with his fitness to my eye.

Equally, I don’t know why we would experiment with three tall forwards when we have a forward set up of two talls and four smaller types that is starting to look potent and clearly delivers the forward half function and pressure we desire.

Lastly, team balance is the most important thing. You can’t just suggest ‘Aish in, Adams out’ unless we have a solution for the on-ball void. In this instance it’d mean deploying Greenwood through the middle which they don’t seem to do unless he is tagging. So that is an option should we go that way on Cripps, as Greenwood could go with him when he pushes forward.

There is little to no love for Wills here but if he has been an emergency because he is legitimately next in line in the eyes of the coaches then he comes in and Adams goes out. I would keep Cox out another week unless absolutely 100% right while Aish vs Greenwood then becomes the last question

With team balance in mind there are a heaps of options:

1. Out: Adams (inj) IN: Wills (on ball)
2. Out: Adams (inj) IN: Aish (Aish to half back, Greenwood tagging)
3. Out: Adams (inj) IN: Wells (on ball - I disagree he's not fit enough but form?)
4. Out: Adams (inj) IN: Aish (to wing, Sidebottom on ball)
5. Out: Adams (inj) IN: Varcoe (forward, WHE to wing, Sidebottom on ball. Varcoe came out of VFL after one week last time. First out, first in?)
6. Out: Adams (inj) IN: Varcoe (forward, De Goey on ball. Robbing Peter to pay Paul? Interesring JDG had high TOG minutes and had spells in the middle from the 2nd quarter. His fitness is there imo. But he is so valueable up forward)
7. Out: Adams (inj) In: Wells (forward, WHE wing, Sidebottom on ball)

Adams is hard to replace, I thought his attack on the ball in the 1st really set us up last night, but we do have options. Irrespective of who comes in I expect that a combination of Beams, Sidebottom and De Goey will pick up a significant amount of the midfield slack in Adams absence. Beams was on managed minutes, De Goeys time in there can increase, and we have a lot of guys that can go to the wing to free up Sidebottom if need be.

+ Carlton have a very tall forward line. We’re probably going to want to have the flexibility of sending either Mihocek or Reid back if we need to.

Folks have asked if Cox and Reid (and Mihocek) could be in the same team? Absolutely! Versus Carlton it’s not a question of ‘could?’ But rather ‘should!’

Darcy Moore gave Charlie Curnow a bath in the pre season game but looks like he wont get the match up if Carlton play as tall as they do this against North.

Roughead and Moore will probably rotate between Casboult/Mckay and Jeremy Howe will go to Charlie Curnow.
