The above structure is how basically every team in the AFL sets up now. Sydney can afford to play goodes, tippett, reid and buddy because Goodes and Buddy are like big midfielders. The only one out of our 4 that can spend time in the midfield is lynch.

Our biggest problem will also be defensive pressure. Hawks played Roughead, buddy, gunston, hale because they had cyril, hill and breust putting on crazy amounts of pressure. We have no one that does that besides petrenko.

We need cameron to come on pretty quickly i guess

Danger couldn't run on the weekend and would have been subbed if DMACK wasn't, have to cut him slack. He relies on his brute strength and explosive pace, bit hard when you can't run.

And we still had him in the centre.

Most clueless coaching panel in the AFL.

Despite the stupidity of always selecting (who the selectors believe to be) the "best 22" players every week and ignoring the future, I am hopeful that they will stick to their mantra this week.

1) There is absolutely no match up for Truck this week. Will 48,000 Crows supporters be subjected to the frustration of continually watching Truck jogging behind Jay Schulz? Poort Poower use their speed and fitness to kill teams on the rebound, how many cheap over the back goals do we have to see this Sunday? Playing Truck on Westoff is even crazier, what about matching him up on Wingard or Robbie Gray?

The obvious match up is Talia on Schulz and Andy Otten on Westoff (or thinking laterally, since Sando has asked all opposition clubs to tag Brodie Smith what about Brodie playing man on man with Westoff all day?) We will also need to play "genuine defenders" on Wingard, Monfries, White and Gray (yes, that eliminates Jaensch and Reilly).

2) We should aim to isolate Tex and Eddie deep in our forward line. This leaves JJ at CHF (to use the old vernacular) and Lynchy as the link man (instead of Tex). JPod commences his coaching career and joins the Geelong reunion in the coaches box.

3) If in doubt, opt for class and youth. Brad Crouch is a must, bring back Matt Crouch and just keep playing him until the end of the season and if fit bring back Charlie (we have the need for speed).

I would give DMac the week off since he does not have a great record of performing if he isn't 100% and use Danger more up forward.

Finally, we must tag Polec. Their other mids will get plenty of the ball but we can afford to go man to man. Also do not allow Broadbent to be their plus one. I would personally prefer to see us play man-on-man (at least this will make Spackler happy) but if we insist on trading loose men in defence then it shouldn't be Broadbent (and ours shouldn't be Jaensch).

The selections this week will tell us a great deal about the future of our coach. Make us proud of you Sando!!!!

Sorry have to agree, Laird has struggled in the past three weeks, needs a spell. Was awful in the air tonight and his opponent(s) had a direct influence on the play for the Bombers.
*He'll be back, just not quite there.

Thats not his fault.
Thats like saying its Boomer harveys fault for getting out marked by sloane or something.

Sando didnt react to the move, its a coaching fault, not lairds

Zaharakis is not some towering colossus. Laird is a defender. Needs to be able to cope in that situation.
Yep agree, Zaharakis is a running player and it shouldn't be acceptable for him to outmark a defender no matter how small if he's the direct opponent.

B Jack Hombsch v Lynch, Alipate Carlile v Walker, Tom Jonas v Dangerfield
HB Matthew Broadbent v Douglas, Jackson Trengove v Jenkins, Thomas Logan v Betts
C Jared Polec v MacKay ,Travis Boak v Thompson, Matt White v Smith
HF Sam Gray v Jeansch ,Justin Westhoff v LThompson, Angus Monfries v Reilly
F Robbie Gray v Laird, Jay Schulz v Talia, Chad Wingard v Brown
Fol
  • Matthew Lobbe v Jacobs,
  • Ollie Wines v B Crouch,
  • Brad Ebert v Sloane
    I/C
  • Kane Cornes v Kerridge,
  • Jasper Pittard v Otten,
  • Kane Mitchell v Wright
    Sub
  • Aaron Young v Cameron, Atkins

  • just looking at ports side from last week, but knowing they will change maybe one or two at most, with hartlett coming back in if fit....

  • where can you fit into our side rutten and pods, especially against port, I just cant see it.

  • this team gives sando more movability to switch and change if needed, and he needs all the help he can on game day moves.

  • if westhoff gets a hold of Thompson, you can then re-access, Jenkins could match westhoff tall and quick, you could move Thompson on a smaller/medium forward and play otten forward to take Jenkins role and have a lynch walker otten forward line talls, you cant do them moves with rutten.

  • wouldn't mind seeing atkins get his first game, would really suit a sub role.

In 2014 laird isn't a defender.
He also isn't suited to the position.
His job was to curb a rampant Zaharakis.
He did that very well, so much so that it forced bombers hand. Just a shame sando was too slow to recognise.

What are you talking about? Laird has been a defender most of this season and all of last season. He's branching out now to perform a defensive role on some mid/fwds which is great. He's regularly going to get dragged forward and will need to be able to cope.

There cannot be a line up switch every time his opponent crosses the front edge of the square.

OUT:
Rutten, Mackay, Martin, JPod
IN:
Cameron, Lynch, BCrouch, CEY

Anyone but Brown on Wingard. Gets lost in the contest every time. Laird is the man for me.
Otten and Westhoff Schulz and Talia

No matchup for Rutten and i want some mobility with Lynch ahead of JPod.

BCrouch plays as the Sub.

CEY's versatility (3rd tall/Mid) and speed could be important against this mob. Wouldve gone Hendo, but he couldnt get trough last week.

How is it going to help Brads fitness if we make him the sub? It would only make matters worse. Needs to start playing 3+ quaters from now on if we want him fit.

I'm talking about the fact that Laird has spent much more time in the front half than the back half in season 2014. Find the stats if you want, I haven't looked, but id put money on it.

He has not been played as a defender all year with Brown and Jaensch taking the small lockdown jobs, and mackay, smith etc doing the running from defense. Just because he gets named at HB doesnt mean he plays there.

Match fitness i can understand but general fitness no.
They would just put him through his paces once the game has finished if he only got a quarter or whatever.

He had to be better in that contest no doubt, but he was down there a while before that happened. There was plenty of time to make an adjsutment.
Also still think he has a future up the ground.

Has played 1 game of SANFL in over a month.
Ease him back in

I thought CEY & Cameron were still injured & unavailable?

Agree B Crouch & Lynch are must ins, but may have to pick a left field selection if we make more changes.

Rutten & Danger are must outs IMO. Both are no where near 100% & caught us short with Mackay's concussion. Also, no match up for Rutten this week.

Ok. Honestly, whilst i would like to win the showdown, it's good time to start blooding some players, so with that i'm going for 4 changes.

Out: Mackay (injured), Martin, Pods, Rutten (omitted)
In: Atkins, Cameron/Grigg, Lynch, B.Crouch.

Grigg in if Cameron is still judged as injured.

Not really. He's always been a strong contested mark. He's like 4th in the AFL.

Contested marks is an over-rated stat. The avge per club per game is less than 10. Pods avges 1.8/game, equal 11th-14th in the league. Tex is equal 2nd-5th at 2.2. As a club, we rank 2nd for that stat. I suppose we'd be bottom if we didn't get those 1.8 contested marks per game though.
