Agreed, they are too much alike. My feeling is that Fog plays better without Walker there
Is there an example of that ever happening?

Fog didn't in the SANFL and I can't remember him ever in the AFL.

At the moment, we need to work out the best way to use Fogarty, and what we still want to get out of Walker across the rest of his career.

I think Fog is better leading at the ball carrier, and working around the 50m arc. But who knows?

The thing with FOG is that he could well play as a big bodied midfielder more like Petracca than Reiwoldt, stint up forward and in the midfielder.

My concern is the club, as per usual, will pigeon hole in that role and say "we have that covered" rather than going out and finding key forwards and allowing him to play the Petracca role
We obviously don't have that covered.

If they thought there was ANY chance Fog could work there, they would have tried it. It's not like it's not obvious. But his complete lack of foot speed and tank must be a barrier.

OK so here’s the deal

Schwerdt stays with the Redbacks this year so they can win the Shield

Then he comes to the Crows for next year and we start our climb back up the ladder

Simple really😬

Was the knock on Schwedt that under Craig he cooked the draftees by working them too hard. I can't remember when he left, but thought it was a fair while ago. Still, would be better than the useless turd that runs that dept at the minute.

That infuriated me - most clubs have always talked about gradually introducing fresh draftees into the full fitness program; Craig (and seemingly Schwerdt) piled on the running from day dot in order to break them and build them back up. Ridiculous.

Respectfully disagree. I think the game has passed Tex by and that he's simply worn out (physically, mentally or both).

We should not be picking Tex in the side and my logic is as follows:
  1. We need to play someone capable of being a 2nd ruckman to give O'Brien a chop out
    • ROB can't ruck the entire game
    • ROB's our only ruckman (and a key asset on our list) and we shouldn't run him into the ground over the course of a season;
  2. Tex is incapable of being that 2nd ruckman so we must pick Himmelberg (or failing that Frampton or even Strachan) in that role;
  3. With Himmelberg in the side there is simply no room to play both Fogarty and Walker.
    • They're basically carbon copies being glacially slow, slightly under-sized KPFs who don't take many contested marks and provide zero forward pressure. We cannot survive opposition teams walking the ball out of our forward line with all three of Himmelberg, Walker & Fogarty playing...(and probably Lynch but that's a separate issue)
  4. Therefore if it can only be one of Tex or Fogarty the answer is simple - it must be Fogarty.
    • Fogarty is the future; Tex is past it.
    • We need to play Fogarty into form, fitness and confidence so that he can be our spearhead for the next ten years.
    • Tex continues to slide and even without the context of points 1-3 he simply doesn't produce AFL level output on a consistent basis.
Decent argument.

The one question I have is why haven't we thrown Hartigan into the rucks when he's playing? He's taller than Tex, no where near as valuable and it allows us to drop a tall in the forward line to bring more speed at that end of the ground.

We then have the option to either throw O'Brien into the defensive 50 to rest (ha, good luck resting in our backline with this team) where he can continue to float in and take pack marks and also further develop that skill if it's something we ever wanted to look at or sit him on the bench. Given we're also playing McAsey, it gives him a bit of exposure to play tall for short periods if we want to stick O'Brien on the bench.

Outside of the f50 ruck, I think it's crazy that Tex was ever trialled in the ruck given he's clearly our best forward. What do we have to lose by throwing someone like Hartigan in there over Walker?

I thought it had happened once but I can’t be sure

I agree that he’s best when leading at the ball. As is Tex

That rings a bell but generally he was well respected IIRC

Hello Crows supporters,

After weeks of hoping for you guys to get in the win column I'm afraid I have to suspend my support for the week. That being said, Collingwood is as vulnerable as they come; our board is trying to say "it's the crows" while trying to forget we also said "it's just freo". In short, you guys have a shot.

But as to why I'm here: will Crocker be playing? Reading this thread I see a lot of calls to drop him. That's too bad, I was really hoping he'd develop with his second chance. 100% heart in that bloke. Any chance this round?
Great bloke great tats! Football...not so much.

There's a huge difference between playing as an actual defender and floating back as a spare. Plus, we don't tend to screw with our backline.

We've stuck rigidly to a back 7 with one on the bench at all times.

No flexibility to ruck Hartigan.

Just another example of us making up restrictive rules for ourselves. We have to go in top heavy up forward for every game in its entirety rather than ask Kelly/Doedee to play tall for brief periods.

Agreed, I think his lack of speed would get exposed but if it's only for 10% of the game, is it a good opportunity to expose him to if it was something we ever considered down the track? Could it help his craft of when he floats down back during general play? I do love his work but sometimes wonder if he's being too ballsy trying to mark it every single time instead of spoil.

Or you bench him and let McAsey or Doedee step up, I just think we should look to be more flexible in a position that really doesn't give us much (Hartigan that is) so we're not really risking much.

The guys has the same pace as Patrick Cripps, and bursts remove the tank issue.

I think it's more to do with the regimented thinking

Fog barely has the fitness to play as an immobile tall in our forward line. There's no way he has the tank required to play in the midfield.

Replace Hass with someone competent, get Fog to drop 3-5 kg and get properly fit, and then Fog to the midfield becomes an option.

Happy Selection Monday Everyone!

I know people are expecting more sweeping changes, but I actually think it will be pretty stable this week.

McPherson in for Kelly
Smith in for Hammil (Inj)
Stengle in for Crocker
Murphy is suspended...McAdam for him

Whilst I agree with all of what you've said, i'd still like to see Fog go into the midfield for a center clearance or 2. Just to add a big body into the mix from time to time.

Watching our contested stuff in the middle is straight up depressing right now.
