I wonder how we'll have viewed the Hawks' talls getting hold of us last week?

Would we look at it and say our line up is too small against certain teams? Bring in another tall this week.

Or would we look at it and say we needed better team defence, third man coming over the top to help out, not leaving our defenders exposed one out?
Good points. The other consideration is the longer quarters, and our team tiring in the second halves - esp the last two weeks. If you look at the teams who apply manic pressure, it's often the case they can't maintain it over the full four quarters, and it seems to me our early success was based on this. the team structure was for more smalls, especially up forward. As the saying goes, players don't get shorter, so it's left us exposed - primarily with Sloane and Berry both out of the team - as that's allowed opposition midfields to get on top later in the games. So we desperately need Berry back this week, along with a tall down back (possibly two - Worrell and McAsey, depending on how GWS structure up).

A good example - demonstrating the work required - is worth just as much as words, and more than words not backed up by action.
This is an excellent point.
McKay has limited AFL game-time coming, but he's a strong example of how to prepare/attention to fitness/where to run etc for Junior players. Hopefully Coaches are telling them:
"Watch David Mackay. Emulate that, then do more".

Disagree. He is great in traffic ... he is strong, quick and hard to tackle.

He's strong. He's definitely not quick - nowhere near it. As for being difficult to tackle... you only get tackled when you have the ball, and Fogarty doesn't get it anywhere near enough for this to be a consideration.

McAsey a chance for AFL this week?
Good news for the Crows, with very positive comments coming from McAsey after he re-signed to the end of 2023:
" “My faith in the Club has never wavered and I have enjoyed settling into Adelaide over the first two years.
“I want to be part of it and I believe the coaches we have will enable me to get the best out of myself.
“We have a great group of young players who are coming through together and we are driving each other to get better every day, so I am really pleased to be here for another two years.” ".
jenny61_99 , I'm very happy to be wrong:

Surely Worrell gets the first crack.

Lol ... he has a quick change of direction and is strong. I would say his he is evasive in traffic, hard to tackle - able to clear a stoppage. Sure he isn't using this to the best of his ability yet, but he has the potential.

Of course you have to chime in with your normal darkness regarding this individual. I'm more on the "look at the positives" side with young players. Fogarty has a lot of upside and a high ceiling ... exactly the type of young player I want in our 22.

You got to give it at least a day before trying a joke again with your alt. Let the dust settle and all that. ;)

Personally. I'm not a big fan of the idea of all 3 (Butts inc.) + Doedee in defense together. There would be a way to pull it off, but I'd rather have two and have another runner in there. Could work in a pinch though.

I do reckon the best move would be to give Worrell the CHB spot, and just work on his stopper game on the fly (seeing he's a very good interceptor, and I wouldn't want to see that blunted). Then let McAsey/Butts fight it out for the other spot.

One little titbit that has been overlooked this week is that we had an optional training session during the week.

Have we always had these?

Cannot remember any mention of optional training sessions ever.

And more importantly.... did anyone go?

There was footage of a few out there. Half the squad if I hazard a guess

It's just so sensible and flies in the face of the "nose to the grindstone" mentality. Was pleased to hear it

Whats the bet we go 1 tall short, the GWS talls dominate and kick a bag each then Nicks comes out and say it all went to plan?

Or did someone beat me to this?

Based on past experience they fix the problem but create a new one by going overboard the other way. Expect our backline to be full of talls this week.

I feel like people are giving the GWS KPF's a lot of credit. When in reality they have not lit the world on fire lately.

Jesse Hogan hasn't looked dangerous since 2019, and Himmelberg and Finlayson have only been good for 3.6 goals per game between them this season, and that's an improvement (last year the pair of them were only good for 2.2 goals per game combined).

Far and away their most dangerous forward is Toby Greene.

Probably has something to do with the 6-day turnaround, returning from Tasmania, and the players looking exhausted in the last quarter.

Does anyone remember a game where we went in very lean for talls in defence
We omitted Hartigan at the time I think
My memory isn’t all that precise but it was huge mistake I think by Pyke at the time

Round 1 vs North Melbourne, 2016

Picked Van Berlo instead of Hartigan. Played Talia, Lever and Cheney as our tall defense. North's three talls kicked 7 goals and we lost by 10 points. Van Berlo had 9 touches and was dropped for Hartigan the following week (he retired 2 games later). We missed the top 4 that year by 1 game.

Yes I still remember this because it was one of the stupidest selection calls I can ever remember.

I'm all for as many newbies as we can handle - who cares if we win or not?

Butts, Worrell, McAsey, Doedee ... absolutely.

Same as I want to see new bodies tried in the front end. McAdam and Rowe can have a rest. Pop Jones and Newchurch in there and see what happens.

It's green or bust for them against the better defences. The problem is that we definitely aren't one of the better defences and made Koshitzke look good last week. Bring Worrell in to cover Hamill. Play Walker, Thilthorpe, Fog up forward and drop Himmelberg back if needed.

That's likely what they will do but a better strat is to play Walker, TT, Himmelberg up forward (which is the best forward mix I mentioned around 4 months ago), bring Worrell in for Hamill who improves our height down back and if we need another tall down back you switch Berg and just play TT deep and Walker at CHF. Bring in a mid for Fogarty such as Berry and that helps your run through the midfield. Another option is that you bring in a 2nd mid for McHenry to give you even more rotations through the midfield and therefore we won't be fading in the last quarter like we have the last 2weeks. We need more runners through the midfield so Berry and O'Connor would be my inclusions along with Worrell. Play Mackay sub as we likely need run last quarter. The other option is that you drop Hately instead of McHenry but that be pretty harsh on the kid after 1 game but he was terrible last week imo.

Lastly I would possibly bring Newchurch in for Rowe but that's a line call. Do you give the Adelaide oval specialist Rowe another chance after his awful effort last week?
