Just FYI, Cox is 50/50 overall after he kicked 4.11 in his first season.

He is 23.16 since.

No way is the goal kicking a deciding factor here. Especially since Pearce is getting thrown up as an option. His sample is too small to analyse (3.4) but the eye test on his kicking for goal was dreadful IIRC. Could barely make the distance from 40.

Interesting discussion regarding key forwards.

Taberner as the perm key forward and Meek/Darcy sharing the ruck and key forward.

If Darcy isn’t ready then play Treacy.

Mundy and Fyfe to rotate forward and Midfield.

As much as I'd like to have Darcy play (underrated defensively) I would hold him over to start at home. We can play Meek, Gawn is going to be Gawn whoever we play.
We need to smash the other 21 Demons on the day.

Cox can play forward but kicking goals is the issue for him. He cant kick it through the two middle sticks lol keep him where he has shown his best footy. Moving him forward is a bad move just to cover someone in the short term. We arnt in premiership mode we are in development mode still this year even if we dont want to be.

He hasn't played forward in nearly 2 years. We don't know whether or not he still has these issues, he's a much more well rounded player compared to his last stint forward.

Banfield gone is a blessing in disguise if you ask me. He's our whipping boyband for good reason.

Now is the time to play the likes of Treacy, Chapman and Meek as every week. Only gonna get better with match experience. No point keeping them aside because they're new. A depleted side opens the door for these guys, and let's face it we can't do much worse than Conca, Colyer, shulz, Blakely, Tabs (on a bad day) etc

My only concern here is Chappy is still very slight. If he did well, professional AFL footballers could snap him in two to take him out. I think we need to be patient with him.

Cox forward? I know that it might be the best option.
But the guy is in the middle of developing into a seriously elite long term defender. His nous, movement and reading of the play is seriously impressive.
For a short term fix, I don't think that's worth messing with. I don't want his progress interrupted. He's our stand out defender after the first two scratchies.
Find another option, whatever it is!

I just think we can cover him down back. The next option up forward fills me with zero confidence. Treacy will get eaten alive.

Exactly, Cox going forward takes pressure off of Treacy to perform big. He can take the 3rd defender with Taberner and Cox as our main targets.

instead of cox forward would rather see fyfe used more forward as he is expected to this year. Rotate him with another tall mid like mundy and there is no reason to send cox forward.He has spent all pre season learning to fist a ball in defence and not kick a goal a goal/practice set shots. Jlo even hinted using a tall defender to ruck rather than play forward.

If all of Logue, Hamling and Pearce were fit, Cox would be CHF. At least Cox has proven to not only kick goals but pinch hit in ruck too.

Cox played all season in the back line as Logue, Hamling and Pearce were all injured last season. It came to a point where Cox was full back and Ryan at 187cm was centre half back

I get where your coming from but who here is the 'loose interceptor' in your opinion?
Hamling, Pearce and Logue are definately lockdown types.
Ryan's proven to be one of our best lockdown defenders - not just a loose.
Cox was playing FB all of last season, not as a loose.
Young and Chapman we haven't really seen much of but haven't been thrown into that loose role from what we have seen?

Yes - we might be too tall and short a really good small lockdown defender (hopefully Logue becomes this). But there's no problem with having a defense where everybody can compete both 1 on 1 and roll off to help other guys out.

Cox kicked 18 goals and 14 behinds in 16 games in 2018. Best game that year was kicking 4 goals vs the crows and got Freo over the off the back of that performance.

As good as he is at CHB. I can see him kick 30-35 goals as a CHF.

Amazing that Freo has so many tall defenders at 190cm or taller: Pearce, Hamling, Logue, Cox, Duman, Chapman and Watson.

Surely 2-3 of those blokes are capable of playing forward?

perhaps, ever heard of position-less defense, that backline would actually be able to do that.

Have to respectfully disagree. Do a Kevin Sheedy and throw Heath Chapman to the wolves up forward. Great mark, 6.4 or so and had the 9th fastest time nationally in the time trial - is is fit and can lead all day.

It was amazing to see in the 2nd derby. He looked like he knew what he going to do with the ball every time. It was written all over him.

I think they play McGovern in line with the ball and the rest play on the man. It's not cut and dry though. Personally I think Ryan plays that role for us.
