This board is going a little nuts at the moment.

Expecting miracles from kids in key roles and premiership success in the same time. [emoji3061]We’ve got depth, it’s been our top end letting us down and our structure has gone to crap at the same time.

“But da recruitment!”.

Not really.

We’ve had a combination of a minimal injury list and a lot of out of for players in the seniors...

Yet the coaches keep backing them in, partly because of conservative selectors, but largely IMO because our midfield reserves consist of:
  • an undersized KPF,
  • a guy who can’t dispose properly at wafl level;
  • a journeyman utility;
  • a Masten clone;
  • the slowest Brayshaw brother;
  • two draftees who are not ready.
Don’t get me wrong - our A team is dominant when they’re in form but there’s very little upward pressure happening this year, which is not great for the ol hangover. And that’s a recruitment issue IMO

I wonder if you did a similar exercise for other clubs listing what they have in reserve behind their frontline mids what you’d find

And in the clubs that do have genuine quality mids playing reserves what their depth is like in other areas

Also keep in mind that we haven’t had a top 10 pick to use since the 2013 draft and even then we traded it down to pick 11. Before that it was 2010 that we had a top 10 pick

Of course few clubs would have the KPF depth that we do, but you can only fit so many into a team.

A couple more handy mids would allow us to put more pressure on those playing on the flanks. And our premiership defence would be shattered if one of our key mids gets a LTI

Don’t think top 10 draft picks matters that much in this context really.

Shattered? I'm not sure about that.

We have Ah Chee and Mallen who could go in the guts as cover for Yeo, Redden or Shuey. Obviously a loss in quality but if the guys can go in with a set role and execute, the system will hold up. It just requires buy in which we are battling with now from the usual suspects. Maybe a hunger injection would actually improve our form?

We managed without Gaff last season and won the effing flag so I think we will cope if he LTI'd.

There is no need to be upset.

One of our key mids got a long term suspension last year, we worked through it.

Nelson has been playing wing in the Beagles. Previously he was developing as a defender.

Turning Sheed into this role sounds counter productive..........massively counter productive.
Pal, I said Smitty on a wing not Sheed.

Aint no way i'm supporting Sheed on a wing!

It could be better but we have proven that we can cope even with one of the guns out, as well as our number one ruck.

The only concern is the lack of young talent but who knows what we will unearth. Yeo was never a certainty to make it as a mid.

We can expect our kids to perform!We have backed them in to do a job not to carry the team.Its always better to come into a team when everybody is going hard because all you have to do is your bit;you dont have to carry the team.We have gotten timid and are playing safe. That will lose you as many games as it wins you,look no further than Hurn and Jetta kicking out.We see a short 20m pass or the long kick to the boundary.NO RISK!!
E.G. we have a guy like Ryan who was the WAFLs leading goal kicker whilst playing as a FF.With all the attention on JK why dont we use Ryan as a dummy FF? One on one he is a gun;you can kick it high and he can mark on your shoulders or kick it low out in front and he has pace and skill to burn.We seem to be trying very hard to stick to last years systems and structures.Everybody else has moved on.
If we give the STs a sniff they will run us to bits.Lets get our foot on their throat early and keep it there.

It would be nice to have more midfield depth. Heck, it would be nice to have more midfield quality in the B22.

We have 2 athletic game breakers in Shuey and Yeo and the rest are more role driven toilers bar Gaff who is working back into form. It's still better than what a lot of clubs have to put on the paddock.

I think what concerns us all is the lack of seeming midfield guns in the WAFL side. Mallen is building, Ah Chee is looking solid and the rest of our midfield prospects are very young. We aren't going to get ready to roll 18 year olds when we are picking mids after 30 in the draft.

Could JK potentially be a surprise out this week?
He hasn't been looking like himself and given the short pre-season and the physical mauling he gets week in week out I wouldn't be surprised in the big fella needed a week off

I get people feel compelled to push back against what they perceive as overly negative posts, but who here could put hand on heart and honestly say they are happy with the club’s midfield depth?

That’s the only point I’m trying to get across here peeps

Your concerns are warranted, but I have no issue with the club stocking up on talls given JK is on his last legs and talls take a bit longer to come on.

We could have passed on Brander and Allen and grabbed more mids but that would have been pretty short sighted. TK aside, drafting is about future proofing for the next decade not the following season. It's pretty rare to get a midfielder who can play straight away, usually they are the top echelon and we haven't had the picks to acquire them.

I guess what I'm saying is if it was reversed and we had quality mids in the twos with no quality tall cover for an underperforming JD and a geriatric JK I'd be more concerned.

Key inside mids. I don’t think Gaff is really that critical to our success.

If Shuey or Yeo missed a whole season do you honestly think we could make a GF?

I didn’t think we could make one without NicNat, much less win one.

Yeah it’s probably our weakest area. I’d really like to see Mellen given a chance to prove himself at the level. Ah Chee is someone who could come in and play a role. Otherwise it’s a bunch of kids who are in the squad on potential rather than anything they’ve shown to date - Ainsworth, Exxon, Foley, Brayshaw and of course Venables.

Well you see you don't finish the year numero uno and get the cream of the crop. Effectively you stat with second rounders
