This is true and it is flawed thinking. Some players look great at training, silky smooth, great skills etc... They can even look great in some games against weaker opponents. Sadly they also disappear against pressure. We've probably all played with guys like that. It really shouldn't take 150+ games to see if a player has that ability or not!
Performances at training are really only important during the off-season. Coaches should place a far greater weight on in-game performances, particularly in the AFL, to decide who gets selected. To be honest, training doesn't matter if you're shit on game day.
