It's just bad luck for Wigg that CEY chose that week to play the best game of his career. CEY will probably never play that well again in his entire life, but he timed it just right (given the need to rest Thompson).

1. 1 swallow doesn't make a summer. Its one game. On the weight of games before that, Wigg was ahead. He stays ahead because his form is still good.

2. CEY is a more logical replacement for Thommo. We should have planned Thommo's resting. We therefore should have projected CEY coming in and had him miss a game last week. Instead we have a development player miss 2 weeks in a row. To me, that's unforgivable. Happened with Brouch earlier in the year. I'd like to think our selection committee is a little smarter than that and actually thinks ahead. We should already know what changes we are likely to make next week, injuries permitting, and our selections this week should have one eye on that plan.

Your obsession on maintaining a definitive order with no real evidence is bordering on obsessive compulsive. Are you now rating SANFL form by the way? To such an extent that CEY can go past Wigg while Wigg didn't even get a chance to compete on the same day. More likely you were correct with your original belief and what's happened is that CEY has had a cracking week on the track and poor old Wiggy could barely get out of 2nd gear or hit a target. That's where your famed and flawless ordering system went bad.

Going back 2 weeks, Henderson was in the team, with Mackay the traveling emergency and Seedsman playing in the SANFL. That's the baseline I'm using. The only reason Henderson is currently out of the team is because he's injured. That's why I think he's currently the highest ranked of those three players. I have no idea what effect his latest injury will have on his standing.

That leaves us with Mackay & Seedsman. Their selections over the last month have been as follows:
R17 - Mackay named on the ground, Seedsman a late inclusion off the emergency list
R18 - Mackay traveling emergency, Seedsman SANFL
R19 - Mackay & Seedsman both named on the ground
R20 - Mackay named on the ground, Seedsman on the bench

Looking at those team selections, it is clear that the selectors rate Mackay ahead of Seedsman.

Thus, the order is:
1. Henderson (subject to return from injury)
2. Mackay
3. Seedsman

The only reason why Seedsman actually left the seniors is because he pulled his hamstring. He didn't come straight back in due to the length of time he was out and form of the player who replaced him (Crouch). Hendo came in for Brown when he was injured, and Brown was in great form. Seed came back in when Laird got injured. Both Mckay/Seed got dropped for the Geelong game for the incumbents coming back from injury (Brown/Laid). Mckay with a whopping 0 tackles against the Pies.

So you're making quite a leap thinking hendo will slot straight back in regardless of the performance of Mackay/Seedsman. He'll play SANFL unless someone gets injured or plays poorly against the Lions. He most certainly isn't no. 1 in that pecking order.

I've only seen a handful of SANFL games when they're played on Ch 7 but get the impression that ROB is a cross between Mumford and Jacobs as far as play styles go.

Kind of helps that we're actually in a position to rest players though - playing extremely weak teams at this time of the year, with a finals position already sewn up. When was the last time that happened, if ever?

Suspect we would have seen a lot more of it in the past, if we'd ever been in circumstances like this before. Most of the time we've either had a tough run home, a moderately long injury list, or been fighting just to make the finals in the first place. None of those circumstances are conducive to "resting" players.

But Mackay offers some serious non-statistical value... or has a serious weapon in the form of some incriminating pictures of Noble and a goat or something.

I actually think Harrison might struggle to win his own ball in the AFL right now. He still has quite a number of areas to work on. He will have to wait until next year to get a go.

Think McGovern was always getting a rest at some stage. Would have been last week except for Tex's injury.

If Walker doesn't come up this week, McGovern stays and perhaps misses the next one.

I'm loving our approach. No longer best 22, one week at a time. Now actually managing our squad with some brain power and keeping half an eye on September. Certainly beats the moronic full bore one dimensional approach we've always favoured.

If it wasn't for the D-Mac blindspot and VB's cameos, selection would be an A+ this year.

Pods was asked about resting more players next week and he said there wouldn't be more resting as no one else needed it.

Also said they've been trying to time the McGovern rest for the last month. In a way it was good timing that Tex copped the ankle, otherwise Gov would have been gone after Geelong and after that performance it would have been seen as being dropped.

It also allowed Pyke to show faith in him and allowed Gov to respond which he did. Now he gets a rest and will be back against Freo, there is no chance we won't play him in his home state. Craig would have but not Don.

Lately yes, but in the past and especially earlier in the year he was quite good at it.
