I consider myself pretty knowledgable on all players in the AFL but gotta say i don't know much about some young Dogs i saw against the Saints.

Just curious to know who are the dogs' key backs these days?
Who will take Casboult, Hederson and Everitt - our 3 most dangerous forwards?

Redpath was an emergency this week and I'm fairly sure he was the week before as well, so he must have been doing something the coaches liked and that was before he went out and kicked 5.

Fletcher Roberts (a jack of all trades type who tends to keep his opponents away from dangerous positions rather than get heavily involved in the play) likely gets Casboult, Joel Hamling (an extremely athletic, skilful type that likes to play in front and peel off to intercept, while also being okay in contested situations) goes to Henderson, while Easton Wood (very aggressive intercept player) probably takes Everitt. Also, Talia could come in and Morris can be used taller if necessary. Roughead can also swing back depending on our ruck setup.

That said, though, we zone off quite heavily and aim to intercept and rebound quickly, so individual matchups aren't so relevant or important if we get it our way.

Havent seen Roberts or Hamling play myself but from what you've described, it will be interesting.

I hope Roberts is a big unit because Casboult is a man mountain who can take contested marks though mostly on the lead...you say he's good at keeping opponents away from dangerous positions but Cas tends to lead from the goal square...probably depends more on the type of midfield supply.

Saw Easton Woods ripping game on the weekend, i think mostly opposed to Membrey? Will be intriguing to see how his intercept games goes against Everitt, who has been in good form and is himself a main target, more so than Membrey.

Also, i thought Roughead was a key defender who could ruck a bit?

Honestly, we haven't seen too much of them either - Roberts has played 15 games and Hamling only 4.

I think Casboult will be a big test for Roberts for the reasons you've mentioned. What Roberts does well though is make his opponent defend - he likes to take the initiative to work up and around the ground and back his ability to read the play, which gets his direct opponent (hopefully) out of position. He'll need support from his teammates if he does get stuck in too many wrestles, but we've been fairly good at offering this support so far this year. We'll be hopeful that it doesn't fail this week I'd think. Roberts is very solid one-on-one but Casboult undoubtedly has the advantage for mine. Midfield supply is big - if you get the ball deep quickly, we are extremely vulnerable. Mess around with it or miss your targets and we're going to pick it off and fire an attack back.

Wood's played a variety of roles this year. Small, tall...it doesn't really matter because he's so aggressive at picking off kicks inside 50. We may however be tempted to go with a different matchup on Everitt as, like you say, the Blues have been targeting him quite a bit lately (and with good success). I do think Wood will start on him but it may not be a lock. He is quite good at locking down on opponents when necessary, but he certainly does like to attack and support his teammates heavily.

Roughead was drafted as a ruck/forward and given the development of Hamling/Roberts etc we've pushed him back to his original role. He and Minson are sharing the forward/ruck duties fairly evenly of late, with Boyd offering the occasional chop-out and Roughead dropping back. Very versatile ruck setup at the moment. Minson is no lock to hold his place in the side, though.

If we lose to Carlton without Gibbs and judd, then we're just not that good. It's a "no excuse" game this weekend.

There's always an excuse......injury.....tired bodies.....incorrect selections.....poor coaching.....poor umpiring....etc etc.

I couldn't believe just how disinterested and scared of playing football we were in the first half of the year.
We're not a great team (which is obvious) but should at worst be mid-table........with or without Judd.

Think we'll be seeing a little more speed injected in the Carlton side this week........but don't worry........we'll leave Jones out for another week. :)

Good luck on the weekend and let's hope for a fierce contest with no injuries.

heck I hate your mob though........just sayin'.

Everyone hates our mob.......................even I hate them but I'm stuck :)

Carlton have little to lose given our position, so it's likely to be a pretty open game. Good for supporters.

Would be great to have 40K to this game. It's possible.

Morris? Really?

Jokes aside, I'll be glad if you leave him out...I have little doubt his annual good game would come against us, haha.

Looked like a king yesterday. Took several A-Grade marks and kicked 6 goals...............you've heard this before, haven't you? :)

Jones can play but it has to be in a very specified and geared role. Anything outside the 50 mt. arc and it falls to bits.

And Thomas ;)

And Menzel. Docherty could miss too which would be a big loss.

The blues will be better team without Gibbs, Judd and Thomas. They will be better without Malthouse. Far more dangerous if they play their kids. I would much prefer to have played them before all that went down.

That said, we bring our A game and we win this easily....if not well they will be up and about and who knows what happens.

surely you don't want to win, isn't this the time of year you guys start playing for draft picks? Don't want to miss out on the next Gibbs surely?

Carlton aren't that bad.
They have what I call Richmond media syndrome. When they win a few games the media bang on about how they are amazing and a real top 4 threat. When they lose a few games they are the worst team in the competition, the list is horrible and the coach is a dud.

In reality, they are both probably somewhere in between.

I want to win and get pick #7...................and then take the next Selwood instead.

........but as long as we don't finish 14th and take the next Jarrad Grant.............can you imagine?

Honey and Hrovat in.

Minson and Dale out.

Roughy to ruck with Toyd pinch hitting.

If we are going for wins over development at the moment calls to go in with only one recognised ruckman worries me. I think we saw the danger illustrated clearly in one passage of play in the last quarter. Toyd goes in the ruck. The ball goes into our forward line and there are zero marking tagets. comes straight out, goes to Reiwoldt who put the ball into the saints goal square, Toyd goes up but does nothing, Bruce marks and goals. It was lose/lose. Tom Boyd in the ruck means we have no structure up forward and we gain an ineffective ruckman. If we drop a few games and finals are out of the question then give Tom some ruck time to improve but not now.

Tend to agree. Mick had them under performing given the teams he was putting out, whereas Barker has them over performing in this 'honeymoon period'. I actually don't think the Blues are that bad, though. Not ridiculously awful but not great. Their list is in a bad state as a result of being neither here nor there, but the team they put out on the park isn't that shocking in my opinion.

That said, we should still win given our form this year, and I seriously hope we do. Particularly if the Blues also lose Docherty, who's been magnificent for them this year.

In theory I'd like to see these changes:

Out: Minson and one of the first years
In: Redpath and Daniel

Just think we need two FT rucks in against Kreuzer and Wood
