I haven't seen the VFL but I thought Jong was named in the best the last two weeks? Sounded like he was particularly good the game before last?

If you believe Big Footy posters on the game day thread, last week Jong was terrible. He made a number of basic errors.

However people forget that he had a small fracture in his hand and then an abductor. He said after the game that he is still working up to match fitness. I thought there were encouraging signs from him in the last quarter.....where he tackled hard, and got the ball out. I didn't see any burst running or pack marks.

So it would be a risk to play him, especially if he hasn't the fitness to go the whole game and this impacts his already suspect ball handling skills.

What happened to Jong? Maybe the hand issue effected his confidence.

Edit: I see the above post provides as good an explanation as any... Lol.

I don't understand the working his way up to fitness thing with Jong. He has had 4 pre-seasons now with the Dogs (I think) so should have a good fitness base. Played the first 10 weeks of the year in the ones, would have obviously been supremely fit at this point. He misses a few weeks (2 or 3 tops) and then starts training again and plays 2 weeks, full games in the VFL. Compare it to Mitch Duncan for example who missed about 8 weeks with a broken bone in his foot, trains for a few weeks and then goes straight back to AFL level with no warm up games and kills it.

How would Jong's fitness not be good enough at this point in the season?

This is not a slight on Lin, love him and he's the first guy I want picked this weekend to come into the team, but just struggling to understand.

From what I saw on Sunday he had a heap of clearances.... all hacked out of the pack and kicked to nobody in particular.

He has issues with composure, certainly not with strength, speed or effort. He is somewhat like Koby Stevens 2 years ago.

Early on in the year he would take the ball, sprint 5m through the pack and then either dish the handball or kick. He isn't don't the 5m burst at the moment and it means he is just hacking the ball forward or giving I'd to someone who is literally next to him and immediately under pressure. He is paying ok at the moment, but a completely different animal to what we saw I'm the first month. I think it's a confidence thing and paying in the two's is by far the best option for him to play his way back to form.

Yeah it was a terrible effort from Stringer but unfortunately for Caleb, every player running at him will be considered tall. Can't hurt sending him that message now.

Any idea exactly when? I wouldnt mind having a look at that piece of play in smart-replay. Shirking doesnt sound like something the kid would do -- I cant back it up (havent seen the play even) , but Im more inclined to believe he was expecting something to happen that didnt work out the way he thought it would, making him look foolish.

Is Prudden a chance to get some midfield time? Or is he exclusively been pegged as a half back - where has he been playing in VFL?

I can't find it. I'm sure we were kicking to the surf coast end so I assume it was the in the last but somebody else said it was the 3rd. I skipped through both quarters but couldn't find it.

stefoid - Found it. Watch from 20:40 mark of the second. Pulls up and sticks his toe out at it. I see what he was trying to do - poke the ball through but it was a bit cute and caused a turn over. Shocking kick by Stringer did set him up though.

Question guys. Scenario. We're up by a few goals in the last and Bucks has just thought stuff it, let's chase them or lose by more and he gets everyone out of the forward line except for Dane Swan. Who matches up with him up there?

Cheers, just watched it. Very tough position to be in with 2 geelong players there and no support for himself. Almost impossible for him to manufacture getting out of there with the ball no matter what he did. Against two players, if he goes to ground, the spare opponent will end up with the ball 9/10, or give away a free for holding the ball. I think the correct response to that situation is to keep you feet so you can cover the spare.

Ill assume he was trying to keep his feet and tickle the ball away from the spare along the boundary to manufacture a throw-in, and it didnt come off.

Wood. No brainer.

Dale Morris for me. So strong and smart, really good match up for Swan actually.

On what I have seen , if Prudden is to make it , it will be as a midfielder. No way he is a HBF.

Just watched it back. Think it was more being caught in two minds. Kick wasn't great from Stringer, Caleb should have done better but hardly a hanging offence. I'm sure bev will bring it up during the week and tell him he needs to make a decision one way or the other next time around.

Wood - who then kicks his arse with rebound out of defense!

How does general admission work at Etihad? If I get there early enough, any chance of level 1 seating? Haven't been in a while and can't afford a membership being a dishevelled student.
Hopefully we turn up and can get the win. We're in with a big shot if Elliot and Cloke are both out. If Wallis is out that's a big loss, running a bit low on inside mids now, with Stevens out as well. Would probably throw Boyd in there if Wally is out.

Are you seriously forgetting the fact that he broke his leg?
It means that he effectively doesn't have the 4-preseasons due to the broken leg.
It means that when he does get injured, he talked longer to get his fitness and form back up to scratch because of the lack of "built up" fitness because of the broken leg.

Thanks for the replies guys. Did think Wood but was seeing if there were some left field suggestions out there. Dale Morris was an interesting suggestion though.
