A 2nd gamer is very rarely viewed as a mainstay in the 22. Since Grigg only had 12 possessions for the day against Geelong I would say he didn't prove to the coaching staff he was the best choice ahead of whoever they brought in.

History ......look at majority of young AFL players
3-4 games first year
double # games in 2n year .......and those that make it start to become regulars in year 3

it's just a progression often repeated ......due to building AFL fitness ....being able to maintain standards game after game ....and being able to play with injury niggles as most do

The good teams pick players on merit - not on age. Young guys who don't earn it aren't the exception - they generally get a few as a learning experience (like a few want with CEY); but they aren't the problem here.

We've got young players who should be playing based on the quality of their performances - not just on potential - yet they struggle to get a game ahead consistently underperforming senior players.

Actually that's a pretty sound conclusion. Most don't go to every SANFL match and considering not every SANFL match is televised it can only leave that conclusion. There is no doubt some young players deserve selection but they have to wait their turn. 9 times out of 10 you aren't going to drop established players for debutants they will come in for injury and unless they play a blinder could see themselves out of the side. Its unlucky and unfair but its the reality of selection for every club in the history of football.

Kerridge was unlucky in his first year that the club had virtually a full list to pick from and all were playing well. Chad was playing in a team too shit for words and was always going to get every benefit of the doubt. Chad was also pick 5 or something compared to kerridge pick 27. This season he had a blinder in the north game no doubt. I think he hurt his shoulder or knee or something when the crows were going to select him. I am not sure whether he returned to his form in the SANFL that got him the North Game. That's probably keeping him out of the side if that is the case.

Look, if you want to take a default position of agreeing with every selection that's fine, but don't criticise those of us tht don't especially when it's obvious you don't know what our players are up to.

yep solid argument .....however the debatable point remains whether good SANFL form is better than average AFL form

So here's how it works.

During their first 50 games players are inconsistent and make mistakes. Gradually they improve their efficiency and after 50 games should be regularly featuring in our best players.

At the start of last year the club declared that Sam Kerridge was "AFL ready". He was made the sub against Hawthorn and then ignored for the rest of the year. In his seventh game of AFL he was named BOG by both the Crows and Kangaroos coaches. Two games later he was banished back to the SANFL for the season. So after 2 seasons he will be 41 games short of the magic 50 games.

Chad Wingard on the other hand was selected in the same draft as Sam but will have 40 odd games by the end of the year. But, but , but Chad was always going to be a champion (he averaged far fewer possessions in his first 20 games than Sam has in his 9 appearances). O.K. what about Jake Neade, selected this year from the bargain basement bin and has already played 15 games, or Sam Colquhoun. These guys would be 2 years from an appearance if they were at the Crows.

Let's see how Thommo performs with one groin (love his speed on the spread) and Porps has played a good game for Westies so he should be good for another season and a half of gold passes.

Wines is another. Played every game this year bar one. Already played more games than Kerridge.

We couldn't even squeeze Crouch into our team in Round 1 this year (and dropped him again later in the year).

When your shooting for finals you play what you deem to be as close to your best 22. We made the preliminary final last year on the back of those under performing players. Gradually as this season has worn on senior players are finding themselves on the outer as punishment for the under performing season. But the reality is as it stands we played a very inexperienced side in the showdown. I think we can excuse Sando for having a false belief in our senior players this season and giving them every opportunity to succeed. We are already playing a young team I don't see the point in ripping out more experience from the side because it starts stripping the side of its belief to win.

7 first year players with reasonable games totals and still not happy

It seems to m e that because most here never see players live ...they want them to play an AFL game so they can be evaluated .....really good selection policy

What a load of garbage - all anyone is asking for is for us to put our strongest team out on the park, regardless of whether they are 18 or 33. Examples;

porps - hideous as a 3rd fwd this year and Johnston only gets a game through injury...look what happened...kicked a third of porps tally in 1 game.
Thompson - shocking...look what happened when we got him out of the game against Geelong - that move got us back in the game
Reilly - Hendo a revelation but only due to injury
Grigg - may have been the difference against Port if he had played all game as he should have
Kerridge - kicked 6 in a f...g half of football, then never played fwd again, then f...g dropped
Jacobs - appalling - when he was subbed against Kangaroos we got back into game
Jaensch - shocking for how many games
Tambling - 24 possessions 1 week, sub the next, dropped the next
Hartigan - plays one game, plays well and has an impact then dropped the next week

this is why people get pi...ed off, especially when we are consistently snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. We see glimpses f players who may make a difference then they disappear, we see the same old hacks week in week out spudding it up.

Still if you and your fellow sychophants are happy with 13th then enjoy. Yet another wasted year

And this year we are challenging for the bottom 4 but Kerridge gets half the games of Jake Neade (remind me again where Port are this season, how many injuries have they had?).

Another valid comparison is Chad Wingard last season, Ollie Wines this season and Brad Crouch.

Crouch had a much better pre-season than Wingard and Wines in their debut season. He was eventually selected he looked great but after a minor hamstring strain he was given the world's longest recovery at West Adelaide before finally getting a recall. His first season is better than The Chad last year and better than Ollie early favourite for the rising start Wines this year. All three will develop into great AFL footballers, who has been given the best chance to develop their potential?

If you had any clue you would know Grigg got those possessions in about a 1/4 and a 1/2. Same as Sunday. If you are insistent on positing your sychophantic rubbish at least get your facts right.

I read other boards, in particular Essendon an the love, support, & unity for the club under current circumstances is admirable

US .....well we blame everything on the club .... every young player that plays a good game is destined to leave us (view of most posters) .....an no-one wants to come to poor ol Adelaide

And grow some balls. Supporting a team means through thick and thin. I don't expect us to all be delusional like some Essendon posters, but I reckon we don't need to find mistakes even where there there isn't one. There are always decisions that seem wrong Jaensch/Rielly/Mackay and others that are obvious...... Sydney and Richmond games for example. But constantly looking for things that are wrong is cheap and petty. There is plenty to blame management for without looking for the next mistake.

fact is every player deserving to play some AFL games has one so ......now the qty of games and timing may not have been to the liking of this board, BUT the club ALWAYS knows better than us when a player is ready

Lyons ..... Currently 9 season games
Brown ..... Currently 17 season games
Kerridge ... Currently 8 season games
Laird .......... Currently 14 season games
Grigg .......... Currently 2 season games
Hartigan ....... Currently 1 season games

Don't care what people believe .... 7 first/Second year players in a season ...and 4 playing most weeks is a positive for club development

I have included Mitch Brown and Caddy but that means I should really also look at Talia 18 (3rd year) and Jenkins 17 (not a kid but 2nd yr) and A. Riley 2 (3rd year).

I would say that compares very favourably when considering blooding young players into the team.


There has been lots to be concerned about. But we can't forget there is lots to look forward to. Especially after draft day..... I'm not reading any newspapers for a month after the draft.

That still doesn't convince me to say he should play against Fremantle. At least Adelaide righted the selection and brought him back in for the showdown.
