Laird for Martin (releasing smith to play midfield)
Dougie for porps

Does jpod have what it takes to play on westhoff? And shaw up forward?

Encouraging news. With Pods fit and JJ not firing a shot Saturday I don't see any changes up forward (save for LJ who will no doubt get 3 )

If we include Douglas you would have to think he and 2 others have their hands up - Crouch/Laird.

Douglas comes straight back in of course for one of Porps, Martin or Lyons.

Will we make 3 changes though?

Edit: anyone think Charlie is ready and if so might he be in the mix?
Not ready yet ....his tank is below par so he needs a number of competitive games to build his tank up

That said would not surprise if he played in 2nd half of the season ......maybe 4-5 games & definitely not thru winter

As for changes...assuming Dougie is out still.

In: M Crouch, Reilly
Out: Porplyzia, Martin
With Port having a quick side just can't see M.Crouch playing or Reilly being risked in this type of game

Think they'd be keen to get Laird back in & Martin has to go

So Laird IN Martin OUT

OUT: Shaw and Martin (Both finished at the AFC)
IN: Hartigan and Reilly

Smack and Jaensch were good. Just the usual Big Footy crowd cant see through the hate of their whipping boys.
JPod and JPorp were rubbish, lucky a couple of guys are still at least another week away.

Talia - Westhoff
Rutten - Schulz
Hartigan - Butcher
Sub - JPorp
What are you kidding?

Yep, i agree Smith needs to be released.

Shaw to play on Gray or Monfries…they are marking players who will smash Jaensch or Laird. Brown on the other.

Hartigan in for structure, unless Jenkins in and Pods back but I'd go option 1.

LJ cleared by MRP. Free to play
Never in doubt.

I wouldn't be all that surprised if we went in with an unchanged list unless Douglas in cleared to play.

I guess Laird could come in but given how Crouch managed to get 38 disposals in the SANFL practice match and struggle big time against Geelong, I wouldn't want to bring another underdone player in so he'd have to be 100% ready to go.

Ok If Douglas is right then he comes in for lyons or Martin leaning towards Lyons as a like for like. Dicky is such an important player

Looks like Douglas is all dick and no balls at the moment. :p

It would be massive boost for us if he plays. If we can smash them in the midfield it will go a long way to us winning.

jpod would do ok if he's at the contest. keeping up with westhoff and being at the contest will be his major challenge.
What I would like to see is Pods switched back to a spare in defence the instant they start a momentum surge

Jpod playing as the swingman in defence would be a good weapon to counter their three big targets.

Have Smacko and LJ up forward. Geez how far has our forward line dropped. :(

I get the feeling Betts will play well on Saturday, its a big stage, fast track and good conditions too.

I would like to see Pup come in. His speed and tackling would be useful.

IN: Douglas, Laird, Pup
OUT: Martin, Porps.

Can't think of a third player to drop which means one of my in's miss out. Dropping Shaw already would be a bad choice imo.

What changes I hope you make (take it as a port perspective, or who makes me nervous...), not the obvious ones.
Drop: McKernan, Martin, Johnson.
Keep: Pods (in forward line) Jaensch, Shaw.
Bring in: Petrenko, M Crouch, Jenkins.
Consider it oppositesies

Also, did not consider possible injured players such as Douglas.

Will he be quick and efficient enough to deliver long upfield? He won't be able to progress many more than 4 or 5 steps with the ball in hand. In that sense, he's the opposite of what hendo can do. I think we have to remember that his best is behind him. He was delisted by the cats. He was recruited for structural purposes and to create a contest. Any expectations of him being a 'swing man' or 'working up and back' are fanciful. Fact is that he won't play in our next premiership and he is here to cover tex and/or Jenkins. Josh is fit and able to play and his development should take precedence over a few more games for pods. If pods plays ahead of jj when jj's fit, then we should have just delisted him when he broke his ankle.

Porps out for dougy.
Lyons gets a full game.
Thommo or m crouch for sub. I'm not a complete fool or full drunk, so I know thommo can't be a complete out, but after his 2013 and last week, he can't have many more credits left. He looks super, but I fear those years of carrying our midfield have caught up.

They just showed that goal by Bartel, Dunstall thinks it was Smith on him. He showed Smith pushing forward off Bartel as we were looking to attack and had it I50. There is a turnover in our forward 50, Bartel hasn't come up with Smith and has just sat out the back of the pack... sees the turnover and immediately pushes forward with a mountain of space. Luckily for Jimmy, Geelong get clean ball movement through the middle and kick it to him quick smart.

A little bit of luck, and a little bit of smarts I guess. In that case though, I think one of our defenders has to stick in the D50 and prevent that type of situation occurring from a quick turnover. I don't mind Smith pushing up either as he's a very good kick for goal, but another one of the defenders had to cover.

No I don't want him working up and back.

Port win games with powerful 10-15 min bursts where they blow teams to the sheizen hausen. All I'm saying is that when the tsunami hits, I hope we are alert to it and clog them up with a spare in defence for that period.

Pods is a big body who can patrol an area to close down space. To be honest I don't care who does it, as long as someone is sent back.

personally I'd love to see Hartigan play. Don't know who comes out (maybe Rutten?) but Hartigan is a massive body, very quick off the mark and hits the contest hard. Not sure he has Rutten's smarts but I think he has massive upside in the fact he brings more physicality to the table and could iron out guys like Westhoff when he drifts up forward.

don't get me wrong, plenty of diesel left in the Truck's tank, but I think Hartigan could be a bit handier with the Port matchups and more suited to the type of game I think this will be.

I agree. But I think that player needs to be able to hit a lot of contests or get in position to be able to hit the next one. I don't see pods as being that bloke. Dropping back into defence for the cats in the last couple of years is not exactly the same as doing it for us. We're not Geelong and nor do we have the version of pods that earned a contract extension a couple of years ago. We got the delisted version. Not saying he won't provide some value to our team, but outside of forward line structure and the odd bag against the bottom few, he's a little bit past it. Despite his afl body somehow being much younger than his actual body.

I'd like to see Lyons given a full game in the mids and hope his clearance skills can help, especially against Wines, he had 11 clearances against the Blues, can't allow that much. I fully expect him to be dropped however.

Dougy is in if he's healthy, same as Laird, I'd go those two in for Martin and Porps.

Would prefer pets to go back and attack the contest in the back half. Although I understand he is not strong in the air. I'd suggest that if his mantra was to get the pill instead of tackle the bloke with it, he would be a good to nearly very good afl footballer.

If you want to understand the bizarro world mind-set thrust upon him, look no further than the poor buggers face when he is forced to line for a shot on goal.

Absolutely. You can't have enough blokes who can get their own footy. Forgot about a fit laird, maybe thommo does need to have a couple off with a groin. After all, he's a champion of the club due to the fact that he carried our midfield based upon his ability to gain contested possession, as distinctly opposed to elite ball usage.

How could thommo be dropped for Martin? I didn't realise I was doing it, a small moment of clarity, if you will. Anyway, I'll give it a go. Thommos gig is inside, his ball use, especially long is not good. Lyons and m crouch are presently better equipped to get the ball in the first place and distribute in tight traffic. Actually, Lyons was better equipped in 2013, but that's another discussion. Where does Martin fit in? He has potential outside, elite ball usage and deserves another go as a player hamstrung by opportunities. It's pointless playing him against the cats if he's just going to get dropped this week.

I lust for the courage of the club to tell a great like thommo that he needs a rest, but sadly in doubt that we presently have it in us. Vb as well, while I'm at it. And did anyone mention mookay.

Tsunami is a bit much... We just have to shut down Westhoff, especially when he goes forward. We have everyone else covered if we're switched on.

Petrenko could be an excellent sub option. Had a very good second showdown last year and would give a spark and attack the ball/body like a man possessed for a quarter or so.

Fitness probably not quite there for a full game but he looked quite good for the reserves in the second half and had a nice game v Carlton in the Nab cup.

Lucky sanity prevailed and LJ got off. With Dougy and Laird returning, Crouchy better for the run and Sloane/Danger to return to top form we can definitely pinch this. And won't it be sweet.
