No doubt - but Laird is the guy I'd be most comfortable putting on Wingard this weekend; and I think he's the type who would be burning from getting touched up last time, and would be desperate for the chance to redeem himself.

Only if he's fully fit. I don't want to see an underdone Laird matched up against Wingard.

Pick your good players first. Crouch is one.

Then AFTER THAT you fill up with your role players. If we need half a dozen back pocket players to counter Port... fine. But that happens AFTER your good players are in the 22.

This thought process would most likely leave you with 12 midfielders, a handful of KPPs and god knows about the rest.

You really want to go into this game with only Luke Brown to match up on Gray, Wantsfrees and Wingard? This is only going to force Brodie Smith to play more defensively and tie him down, limiting the minimal run we already have coming out of defence.

At this stage we cannot afford to drop Mackay either, and you cant possibly think about dropping Jaensch after last week.

Pods? Really? Leave only Mckernan and LJ as the talls up forward....o_O

Only omissions I would be okay with are Porps and Martin as they are providing very little at this stage. But then again that leaves only Betts up forward as our small threat.

I thought it was Robbie Gray who gave Lairdy a bath in the last showdown.

For me its Luke Brown for Gray & Lairdy for Monfries
Monfries is still very dangerous overhead, possibly Laird's only weakness due to his diminutive stature.

I'd go:

Talia/Westhoff
Rutten/Schulz
Shaw/Butcher
Brown/Gray
CEY/Monfries
Jaensch/Wingard…a career defining opportunity.

Is that 4 weeks till he plays SANFL? That would put him in contention then for a R9 game at AO, perfect way to boost attendance against a bottom club.

He'll be back before round 9. Those soft rounds after Sydney will be a good time to get him back him. I don't see any point in giving him 3 weeks in the twos. If he's fit you play him. I know he has said he wants to come back via the twos, so give him 1 game for the sake of confidence. After that I'm sure he'll be chomping at the bit to get back in the real stuff. Chances of the injury recurring are just as great in the SANFL

Its not so much him have a occurrence of an injury but rather rotating him on and off the bench/resting him/playing him for a half etc, I hope the Club goes down this path rather than 1 game in the two's and then back into AFL.

When our forward line is dependent on Smacko, you know there is something not right!
Imagine if we could go back in time and pick Monfries and flick Porplyzia (who was already running on fumes at that stage). A much more damaging look to our team. Would have been a tough but the right list management decision.

Hmmm. Schulz, Butcher, Westhoff, Gray, Monfries. Looks kinda scary compared to our forwards. Carn Crows!

Butcher is incredibly shit but he's the type of player that will come out and kick 5 arsey goals if were not careful. Never rated Angus Wantfrees, he's up there with Selwood in terms of playing for frees, except Selwood is actually good. Always liked Gray and it looks like he's getting back to his best. Schulz always dangerous & Westhoff is, somehow, the most dangerous. Think Talia can contain Westhoff but my biggest worry is who will go to Gray.

So the full game he played last week is irrelevant
A full game in the SANFL. How did B Crouch's 38 touches the week before translate to the real thing against Geelong?

Look, as I say, I'm a big fan of Laird. I just think people's expectations of what he can achieve after a non-existent pre-season are a bit optimistic.

As much as Butcher can't kick, he is pretty good at pressuring in the forward line. If they continue the static handballing in the back half, he could cause some problems.

Absolutely spot on. And Crouch will be 10x the player that Laird can be.

I really expect Crouch to have a good game on Sat. Had a trial game then a week of training. Had 3 quarters against Geelong to find some fitness and then an additional 9 days to work on fitness....

I like Brown too but you fill your key midfield roles before your back pockets. I'd like both of them in but Crouch gets picked first.

I haven't laughed so much since the time that Spackler declared that AFL coaches never play a loose man in defence .

Did you check out the B&F last year?

I was at Geelong and Luke Brown and Talia were the more reliable of our defenders despite the avalanche of uncontested ball from the Cats midfielders. Luke Brown will be one of the first players selected this week and he will play 22 games plus finals if he remains fit.

I do rate Matt Crouch above Martin and Porplyzia from now to eternity. I watched the replay last night and it just confirmed my thoughts at the match. Porps and Brodie were competing for the world fumble record. The worrying thing is that Porps was fumbling ground balls (he used to be the second best Crow with balls below his knees), he was not gripping the ball overhead and his tackling was insipid. If Dougy is good to go (insert balls below the knees joke) then it has to be Laird and Dougy for Porps and Martin. If Dougy can't get up for the Showdown then Matty Crouch should get the nod.

My guess is that we will drop Jarryd Lyons and bring in Reilly :p.

Oh yeah? I bet he has a total of 4 kicks all from impossible angles and nails them all. Bookmark it, strange shit happens for port when they play the Crows.

Aww Lyons a little unlucky IMO (biased as that may be) but probably the most like for like, Porps extremely lucky and would have to be sub surely?

Happy with Douglas. Reilly will at least give experience but Lyons stiff I reckon

I feel the same, very happy to see Richard Douglas in, makes me more comfortable with the mids group and Reilly brings experience which could be important in a big game, but does he bring good form with him.

I guess that's the just about the end of the line for Martin, unfortunately. I'll be surprised to see him make it back into the side. Lyons seems to have become his spiritual successor, too. The coaches just aren't impressed.

It's a pity how we handle some of these guys.

Excited to see Dougie back, however. He's always been a favourite of mine.
