With the recent string of people not wanting to be at our club because of where it is (i.e. it's not Melbourne), you have to also consider the fact there may be constraints on who they can recruit. It's easy to say "Burton is a jobs for the boys" situation, but it may just be a case of he was the best guy available who was willing to come to the club.
So we are going to build the ' league's best South Australian football program '

The simple fact is, we were one of the fittest teams in the comp this year, we had very low incidence of soft tissue injuries, the bloke responsible quit because we appointed a bloke above him with arguably less qualifications.

No conclusions jumped to.

Certainly sounds like Brett has been employed not so much for his strength and conditioning prowess, but as much for his ability to coordinate our strength and conditions and medical/rehab programs and at the same time liaise with the coaching staff and David Noble in a meaningful manner. I think we'll see the club look to employ the technical experts under Brett to do their specific jobs, these are the guys you want to be top of their respective fields in fitness, strength, medical, Physio/rehab etc. Brett's employed because he has the football experience, as well as decent qualifications in the industry, as well as significant leadership skills (President of the AFLPA for 6 years should not be sneezed at).

Brett hasn't been employed for this role because he's the best strength and conditioning guy, his role is more than that, he's employed because he has a variety of experiences and ualifications that allow him to oversee the experts we get to perform their specific roles.

As much as I think Poulos is a big loss, people don't think his lack of experience in the game might have been an issue when working with the coaches? I suspect this was an issue brought up by Walshy mid year. We want to be able to headhunt the best people for each specific role, no matter whether their specialty is underwater basket weaving, synchronised swimming or AFL. Brett's role is to ensure these experts in S&C, Fitness, Recovery, Rehab/Physio, Dietetics, Medicine, Podietry, Psychology etc are all working to the same beat and understand their roles, and that there is good clear communication between these fields and the football coaches.
Good points
I'm dubious on whether we will find a decent person to work under him by pre season in 6 weeks time

By all reports Poulous has no issue with the club and everything is on amicable terms. The conclusion you've jumped to is that he left for that reason (employing someone else) and that reason alone.

If there's some sort of statement or report you can show me that disproves his leaving on his own accord, I'd be interested to see it.

Further, the term "best available" is a more workable standard than "best", and I don't think we should be under any illusions that the head of fitness for, say, Manchester United is suddenly going to be interested in joining the Adelaide Crows.

Where did you hear by all reports? From the Crows?

I think he said he was happy to do some consulting work with us. A disgruntled former employee doesn't offer that. Can't remember where I heard it but I've heard nothing that suggests bad blood, so where is that coming from? Where did YOU hear otherwise?

Burton was expecting Poulos to be there when he accepted the job. Poulos left after Burton accepted the job. What do I need the club to announce?
Sorry but you're still making an assumption there.

You reading your own posts?
Of course. And I've made no assumptions.

If you want to convince everyone we're installing a new boys club culture on a sample size of one, you'd better hope it's a compelling one. That we've hired someone who used to play for us is evidence that it could be happening, but it's far from proof.

Why would you wish to jump to conclusions so early on? Does Fagan not deserve your trust in his decision? It's just a ridiculous habit of this board to jump at shadows and talk about the old regime. Trigg is gone. Move on.

Looking at other clubs, they don't seem to mind employing former players. Take Sydney for example: Brett Kirk is returning to them after the same length of time away as Birdman, but I've not heard anything about a "boys club" there, considering they also have Playfair, Mattner, Taubert, Crouch, Mitchell, Davis & Maxfield on their coaching books. (and Mickey O)

As long as we don't get the same results as when Burton was working at Brisbane, the second-to-bottom club. I back Fagan to make the right call, but the fact that the Lions were devastated by injury and finished 17th starts ringing alarm bells. Then again, there is also the explanation of the hard Queensland turf, which is beyond anyone's control.

I find it interesting that when an ex player returns to Alberton it is hailed as coming back home to the family and talked up no end. We bring an ex player back and straight away "jobs for the boys"....... Maybe we need to rethink our marketing strategy?

Mate you are freaking me out, on one hand you are critical of me for making assumptions but keep posting stuff like this. Everything you just posted is assumptions.

I have never mentioned 'boys club'
I have never mentioned Trigg
I have barely mentioned Fagan

Burton was appointed, Poulos left, Poulos was good. What the actual fcuk are you arguing with?

You comparing an assistant coach who to the man in charge of our fitness program?

Poulos had a great record this year, Burton did not.

Roo was on the radio a couple of weeks back and said Burton has a big family and wanted to come home. Of course Roo didn't speak to him about the role, that's obvious not a possibility.

I think we are more than justified jumping at shadows, over the last 15 years our club has gone from a powerhouse on and off field to mid table (at best) on both accounts.

Our club has made BAD decisions, that is a fact.

It is not unreasonable to suggest this is continuing, if you want to believe the best person available in world sports just happens to be an AFC ex-player than fair enough, to me it smacks of another case of jobs for the boys.

Sydney has enjoyed success over the last 10 years, so it appears the people they select to fill their roles works whilst us on the other hand have not enjoyed success over the last 15 years maybe the people we select aren't the best we could get. But we keep doing the same thing maybe it will work one day.
