As long as we don't get the same results as when Burton was working at Brisbane, the second-to-bottom club. I back Fagan to make the right call, but the fact that the Lions were devastated by injury and finished 17th starts ringing alarm bells. Then again, there is also the explanation of the hard Queensland turf, which is beyond anyone's control.

To be fair to him the majority of our injuries were impact related this year. The one thing I thought Burton did well was massively decrease the spate of soft tissue injuries we were plagued with before his appointment. No whether that was at the sacrifice of strength I'm not sure.

I had a problem with the appointment initially but not any longer.
It is common everywhere for managers to have people working for them who have more technical expertise and qualifications than they do.
If indeed Nick was not popular amongst the players then Brett Burton is indeed a good choice. Head of player association and popular ex AFL player ... not from alien sport etc.
If indeed Nick spat the dummy just because someone he sees as less qualified would be his manager then that kind of justifies the whole process. People who are technically wonderful often make poor managers. If Nick cannot appreciate that and learn to work with people he regards as inferior then I do not think he will get very far, as that is life!
As I mentioned, Dr. Andrew Potter is probably more qualified and experienced in his field than Nick Poulos and certainly more qualified than Brett Burton. No signs of a dummy spit from him yet.
At what point do we stop letting go of people because the players dont like them. Im not sure Poulos was in a particularly likable role.

Stephen Schwerdt was an ex-player and we certainly looked fit under him (Gold Coast not so much this year).

Will have to wait and see with Burton. You can't question his qualifications for the role though.

Burton's qualifications and experience don't compare very favourably with Jason Weber's of the Dockers (High Prformance Manager). At the Brownlow, Fyfe spoke about Weber setting him a program for the off season, (at Fyfe's request) because Fyfe wanted to add Danger's explosiveness to his skills. Weber has a B and M Sports Science from UNSW. But he also has many years of experience in Rugby Union, including the Wallabies and also in High Performance businesses which he is still involved with.

I wonder if Fages will call upon some of his ex-Union contacts to pad out the fitness team?

Here's burton' interview on 5aa. I feel much better about the appointment, and the direction the club wants to take, after listening to it.

Time will vindicate or not vindicate your comment. Give Birdman a go, let's see how we stack up physically next year. If we have a season were we clearly don't run out games and/or suffer multiple soft-tissue injuries, then I'll be the first to pluck Birdman's feathers.

Well yeah obviously we have to see how he goes first. It's just that the team he's coming from are cellar dwellers who couldn't run a full game out if they tried. Doesn't fill me with confidence.

Human Movement is just the old renamed Sports Science degree so educationally there's no difference.

When he arrived at the Lions he said it was like a country football team with regards to preparation, recovery and training. He was easily beating all of the current players in the time trials. Most of his work has been laying the foundations and repairing what it was before he got there.

I really hope that my scepticism is misplaced. I agree that there isn't a huge difference between their academic qualifications, although a Masters prob represents an extra year of study at arguably a stronger institution. But there is a lot of difference in their experience. As I said, I really hope that it turns out to be a fine appointment.

Didn't we interview Adam Kingsley recently, Defence role? Anyway, he just won the assistant coach of the year award. In his speech he thanked Chocco, Walshy, Richardson and Lyons. Could be a good get?

Strange award

Nit sure how it could be judged

Pat Howard's CV looks impressive however is he doing a good job at CA

I don't think he is

What's the opinion on Poulos within the club?

You comparing an assistant coach who to the man in charge of our fitness program?

Poulos had a great record this year, Burton did not.

Roo was on the radio a couple of weeks back and said Burton has a big family and wanted to come home. Of course Roo didn't speak to him about the role, that's obvious not a possibility.
I'm guessing you were one of the posters bagging Poulos at the end of last season?

I really don't get why people try and judge these appointments, it's impossible to measure their success outside of on field results and the size of the injury list.

The Hawks had a massive injury list last year, is their fitness coach shit? Who the **** knows, seriously.

Looking at other clubs, they don't seem to mind employing former players. Take Sydney for example: Brett Kirk is returning to them after the same length of time away as Birdman, but I've not heard anything about a "boys club" there, considering they also have Playfair, Mattner, Taubert, Crouch, Mitchell, Davis & Maxfield on their coaching books. (and Mickey O)
I notice this post was conveniently ignored...
