Was worried about termites but a quick check shows that Tassie has no destructive species of white ants - lucky buggers
And that Huon Pine is one of the most termite resistant timbers in the world. Australia actually has many timber that has great termite resistant properties.
Then there’s timbers like Karri which is one of the strongest and durable long span timbers in the world.

Who does the AFL think they are, saying Tassie only get a team if they build the second ground ever with a roof?

They are just absolute rotters at every turn.

It does make you wonder if the AFL is trying their absolute darnedest to make sure the Tassie expansion falls through instead of getting a team into the league.

Huon makes for beautiful furniture too.

An engineered timber roof is incredibly expensive

Yep - the roof isn’t cheap - but it’s not going to cut much off the price by changing the design.

So going on the $975m price tag (estimated $175m for the roof) … If they said $850 million with a standard roof - It’s not going to change the minds of those against it (mainly from outside Hobart AND over 60 years old).

I’d say build a world class stadium that we as Tasmanians can be proud of - a place that attracts people - a place where sports people want to play, where performers want to perform, where spectators want to come.

The world’s largest timber span ETFE roof would be a perfect fit for Mac Point. It would be something else, it would be modern and beautiful and functional.

Just get it done.

Wouldnt work for cricket though.

Imagine facing someone bowling 140kph+ and losing the ball halfway down the wicket in a shadow.

I think it looks fantastic, but cutting over 10% off the total cost isnt a silly suggestion.

Is the timber roof an inbuilt "whistle" that can be downgraded so that the naysayers can feel that they've had a win, are being financially responsible blah blah blah and the designers didn't actually want it all along?

So a fully enclosed roof as opposed to a normal stadium roof is not a significant cost difference?

Suggest you take a closer look at the costings! That German wood doesn't come cheap...
Suggest?

Thanks Kane - if you think we aren’t bombarded with details down here around EVERY part of this - you are off base.

It’s not the bottom line cost that is pushing the naysayers - they think Tasmania shouldn’t pay for any of it OR have any risk going forward. So unless the price drops to point where the state government puts $0 in … it is a waste of money as far as some are concerned. Every spare dollar should go to health or education or housing. So no the difference in $ for a different roof is NOT significant.

Would depend on whether there’s any performance reasons behind that decision. Could the extra cost of the roof save costs elsewhere? Has the reason they’ve gone with engineered timber been provided? There’s lots of ways you can cut 10% off the total cost and a fair portion wouldn’t be a good idea

Ok, so you don't think $190M to enclose the roof is a significant extra.

I personally think it's not money well spent.

Each to their own...

Yep - the best things aren’t cheap.

Did you think the $535m for the Adelaide Oval refurb was money well spent?
Yes, I voted for it as I mentioned earlier in this thread.

Adelaide Oval has 3 major tenants.

Tasmania may only have 1 if they proceed with the full roof.

Adelaide Oval didn't spend 20% of the upgrade on an unnecessary roof covering the whole Oval.

At least now you are agreeing with me that $190M isn't insignificant like you claimed before. ;)

Have an update?

CA don't want to play Test Cricket in an enclosed stadium.

This was 3 weeks ago.

From the Enabling Legislation Report (https://www.tas.gov.au/__data/asset...Stadium-Enabling-Legislation-Draft-Report.pdf):

"Work is continuing with Cricket Tasmania and Cricket Australia to identify suitable mitigations to the shading of the roof during day matches. There are several design options that are being considered, including to test different roof materials on site to pilot shadow reduction options. MPDC will continue to work with cricket to test, and trial options to ensure that the stadium is suitable for all forms of cricket."

Other places are looking to build similar stadium for cricket:

"Tasmania may only have 1 if they proceed with the full roof." - no. MacPoint is a multi-purpose stadium Kane.

"Adelaide Oval didn't spend 20% of the upgrade on an unnecessary roof covering the whole Oval." - Not the point - it's public money being spent on an oval upgrade. I'm sure making the refurb fit into the look and feel of Adelaide Oval cost more than the off-the-shelf option - is that a waste of money?

"At least now you are agreeing with me that $190M isn't insignificant like you claimed before." - no its insignificant - it would not change the $ enough to move the needle for the opposers, as I stated earlier.
