Opinion Draft Prospects

I don't like the idea of mini-draft picks. Just costs you an extra year of watching the development of the player. That year can make a hell of a difference. Guys like Tom Swift and James Sellar looked like they were going to be absolute stars and sure top 5 draft picks before their draft year, but then the decline started. Even Butcher was expected to be pick 1 or 2 a year before he was drafted, before injury and other circumstances such as the clubs before us not seeking a key forward caused him to slip to pick 8.

Someone will trade their first rounder for it. Pick 30 is not even worth pretending to think they would consider.

I doubt that, look at it like this

Would be pick 1 this year, pick 1 of the minidraft

Would be pick one next year (Aish), not on mini draft

When you look at the mini draft list, none of them scream top 5 to begin with Crouch was rated around the 5 with O'Meara 1/2. And we're going for the second best player reckon it is martin or DUnstan, both around the 10-20 mark next year.

This years draft is stronger, thus picks have more value. Could understand a club like WB or someone else on the slide giving an ageing quality player for it, not a first rounder. Pick 30 would be hoping a fair bit, but i still don't think it would be a first rounder more a combination of 2/3 round picks and players (for pick 2, pick 1 will get a top 15 pick)

The only club i could see doing it is Melbourne who at this stage might have 4/5 and Viney. You trade pick 4 and 5 to GWS for pick 2(?) and pick 2 of the mini draft.

Thats why you don't go KPP, especailly undersized ruckman.:o

But on the flip side, it gives you one year to develop them, look at how well Crows and GC are doing with Crouch and O'Meara.

I guess you could point to the similarities with Sellar, but Jesse Hogan has absolutely taken over the mantle as the number one mini draft pick. 194cm, huge body and just dominates games. He destroys packs and has made plenty of the WA U/18 state squad's defenders look silly this year at colts level.

Was Claremont's leading possession winner in last years losing GF to Souths (who had a gun team: Shaw, Kersten, Bootsma, Ah Chee just some of the names) playing as a 16 year old midfielder. I don't know how we could do it and if we only have one first rounder this year we should not get rid of it, but I think Hogan is going to be the real deal like a Travis Cloke.

That's kind of my point. I'd never heard of that guy's name before reading your post and now suddenly he's gone from nobody to the No. 1 mini-draft pick. Give it another year of development and other players will probably do the same and Hogan might not be as good in 2013 as he was in 2012 and then we've wasted a heap of trade value on the wrong guy because we didn't wait the extra year.

Bernie has sold me on the Stringer love tbh Tall mid who is versitile he would be right up our ally

Then two mid picks with guys with pure speed

I want to go for pick mini draft pick 2 GP. Martin or the SA lad in Dunstan, both midfielders that will be top 20 next year. Less Risk and less reward though

Stringer/Vlaustin/Toumpas for our first rounder thanks.

chris25 describes hogan as very similar to micheal hurley which i like. he is a great height and size as well, and like our tredrea has grown into kp height without being overly tall from a young age ( not that hogan has been short at any age but hasnt been pigeon-holed to that ruck/ kpp height that is a virtual kiss of death transferring into seniors).

i imagine the first port of call for gws will be to knock on the doors of teams holding compo picks and especially expect a likely scenario where a team loses a player and sends the pick straight back to gws for one mini-draft pick and maybe a mid-range pick.

i dont think they will fetch as high a price as last time for already stated reasons but will not be so cheap as pick 30 either. end of first round compos i imagine would be around the mark.

Emma Quayle suggesting this years draft isn't all that "super" after all.

Not sure this year is the 'super draft' some have said. Not enough depth for that, but there's some great players up at the top end.

champs will tell. Top 30 looks ok to me

with maybe 10-12 real good ones at the top

Interesting!

Rendall calls it a super draft, i'll trust him over Emma

But still interesting none the less:eek:

I rate Emma very highly when it comes to talent identification, but Rendall its astute also!

South Australia's talent is very deep this year. Will win the carnival by a lot.

Toumpas, Grundy, kennedy, Mayes, and menzel all likely to go top 20

Usually `deep' SA talent can be taken as a sign that its not a very good draft year, because it should be being overwhelmed by every other state's talent. Though as usual, its hard to tell how much Victorian bias creates that perception.

There are no `superdrafts' with a high amount of SA players drafted early.

5 in the top 30 is pretty good for SA, but I'd have said it was a mid-range draft. With what Emma has said, it wouldn't be surprising if this year was similar.

2008 was no 2006 or 2001 (but much better than 2002)

Emma is usually the most accurate when it comes to drafts, so I'm definitely trusting her.

Been reading up on the U/18 championships, and I'll definitely be going along to the June 16th game at Alberton between SA and Vic Metro.

Get to see Grundy, Toumpas, Mayes and Kennedy in action for SA, plus also check out this Nick Vlastuin kid who Knightmare reckons we'll draft in his phantom.

Also, reading the small rundown on afl.com.au , I noticed this guy who I hadn't heard of before:

Marco Paparone, East Fremantle, 3 September 1994, 193cm, 84kg
Marco has elite endurance and has the ability to wear down opponents. He's a midfielder-forward who is strong overhead and can get outside well. For a boy of his size, he has excellent athletic attributes.

If he slips to our second round pick, I wouldn't mind the sounds of him! Big bodied midfielder yeahhhh. (or maybe I just think he has one of the best names ever)

Wow, he's Cameron O'Shea! ;)

Oh okay, must admit I rate the 2008 draft a lot higher although it is still early-ish in its development.

Will be an interesting draft, some real standouts. Looks to be an above average draft for mids, pretty thin really for talls.
I hope we get it right and target genuine centre square mids.

Emma's phantom drafts and subsequent rating of kids do seem to be around the mark. I am not sure she is a great 'talent spotter' more she appears to have great contacts throughout the recruiter world.

She does a fantastic job researching the draft though so I agree, she would be more in tune to the relative draft strength than your average BF poster.

And yeah looking forward to this years u18 champs. Looks like we will have a strong showing again this year.
I am also hoping to see what your favourite (Stringer) can produce. Should hopefully be fitter by champs time but jeez, he looks exciting. Doubt we will get close to him but you never know, never thought we would get near Wingard either and that worked out for us somehow.

Thats another pretty normal attribute of a `SA looks strong' draft, incidentally.

Bias call is bias.

WA have a very good line up, as do VM

WA or SA though i reckon

Maybe some bias.

But this same group when the under 16's comp. And we do have talented underage player in dunstan and Aish (who will be the best player of the championships)
