It's funny how we tend to focus on drafting blunders and wonder what if. The 2004 draft was like the McCain factory, full of spuds. Looking back, the success rate of picks after Egan were not good.

But when evaluating recruiting, we need to look at the big picture. Hine's record speaks for itself. My evaluations below are based on the question "has the player shown that they are up to AFL standard?". Not all of these guys are currently in our best 22, but a recruiter who is looking at a scrawny kid and trying to figure out if he's up to par in the big league has a tough job. Looking only at the National Draft, including established players that we traded picks for:

2004
Chris Egan (10) - Had talent but didn't make it. Failure
Sean Rusling (23) - Can't deny that the kid has talent. Recruiters can't be held responsible for his bad run of injuries. Success
Chad Morrison (37) - Failure
Travis Close (39 F/S) - Success
Adam Iaccobucci (55) - Failure

2005
Dale Thomas (2) - Success
Scott Pendlebury (5) - Success
Danny Stanley (21) - VFL hero but didn't translate to AFL. Failure
Ryan Cook (23) - See above.
John Anthony (37) - Steal at pick 37. Success

2006
Ben Reid (8) - This pick is looking better by the week. Likely success.
Nathan Brown (10) - See above
Chris Dawes (28) - See above
Brad Dick (44) - Kid can play but bad injury run. Success
Tyson Goldsack (63) - Not in our best 22 ATM but has shown enough for a kid picked this late. Success

Anthony Corrie (93) - We were never going to use this pick, but could have used the spot on our list for a rookie I guess. Failure.

2009
Darren Jolly (14 & 46) - Growing into the role. Success
Luke Ball (30) - What a couple of weeks! Success
Ben Sinclair (62) - Jury still out
Josh Thomas (75) - Jury still out
Simon Buckley (85) - Jury still out

So from players that we have enough info to make a call on, that's a success rate of 15/21. In AFL drafting 71% is a phenomenal success rate and one I doubt would be matched by any other club. Throw in the likes of Harry O, Wellingham and Toovey in the rookie draft and I'd say Hine and our development team are our biggest assets. Hats off.

Remember asking what he thought of Egan hoping that we had picked up someone that was hard at it.

We should have taken Jordan Lewis,never mind we've got lukey Ball the extractor we needed now.He will only just get better and better as the season progresses.Lewis does have a bit of speed though.
