Egan - The Draft Bust

--- I reckon a lot of this stems from the fact that the NT aborigines in particular, grew up in an environment of high risk football, where players regularly go for the audacious option over the percentage option. -----

Didn't he come from Northern Victoria - up around the Murray somewhere?

He did show that he had a lot of talent and potential at times - simply another example of a player not prepared to do the hard work.

Any idea where he went after the Pies?

He played last year with Williamstown and has signed again for 2010. Same story down there. He has some freakish tricks, puts on a show before and after training... but terribly lazy and always injured. Played 11 games for 10 goals in 2009.

Ended up in the Williamstown Reserves:p

Just didnt have the desire to make it at top level but looks like the way he was decribed was how he played out his career really brilliant in patches but gone missing for large portions of gamesif he was doing this as a junior how was this going to improve at senior level?

I remember him being in really decent form in the two's until he hurt his knee is 07, it was terrible timing for him (I think he was just on the cusp of being selected) and he never seemed to come back around from it.

Meek as a kitten though and his skills were only silky when he wasn't under pressure. I agree with RS though, I think we've improved significantly since those days, you can obviously never pick them with absolute certainty, but I'd be surprised if our current department pulled out any blokes like Morrison or Egan with first rounder any time soon.

Had a laugh at this though, I wanted to check out Egan's game stats on footywire and thought I'd look into the fanforum thing;

Anyone spot the celebrity poster? :P

Quite possibly the worst Top 10 pick of all time.

At least Top 5.

Can't believe we gave up a chance to get Brad Ottens and instead got Egan. Such a terrible terrible decision.

Biggest blight on Hines record thus far.

How could we miss Ottens?

Egan was a bust but the worst top ten pick of all time? That would have to be one of the worst calls of all time.

Heard of Richard Lounder?

Egan was soft at it, lazy, and couldn't pinpoint a pass 9 out of 10 times. I was happy when he was let go, he was one of the ones that needed to be delisted (deadwood). There were others and most of them have gone as well since then.

The list is looking pretty good now. :thumbsu:

Pretty sure that was the pick we COULD have used to pick up Ottens wasn't it?

Richmond wanted a Top 10 pick, we had 8 or 10. Richmond ended up accepting 12 and 14. Smh.
Ottens cost 2 first rounders iirc, why moloney went to melbourne

He was a beatiful mover with extremely clean hands and good awareness. The draft is always a gamble. I reckon he was a pretty good high risk for a potential high return selection. At the time we lacked class, and if he had have got his head right he would have given us that class. Just because you lose a bet doesn't make it a bad bet. Eg. If you are betting on the toss of a coin and tails is paying $5, you should bet on it, and it's a bloody good bet, but you'll still lose half the time.

Rumour is that it was him or Bate. Maybe I underrate Bate, but to me Bate lacks the class to make our side as a half forward, isn't a midfielder and would probably have been developed as a back flanker. At this stage of their careers, Bate'd be a marginal upgrade on Macaffer, but with less scope for improvement. So I am happy for us to have taken the risk on Egan.

All criticism here are true but (and this is off the top of my head) IIRC he ended one season possibly 2006 or 2007 pretty strongly playing off a half foward flank and got injured or suspended early the next year.

Dale Thomas on the half foward line had a similar set of skills but a much higher work rate. IMO if we hadn't of got Thomas then Egan probably could have made it as a HFF. He moved well, lead well, nice vertical and good leap. As it happens Thomas showed us how much more we could get from this kind of player and we haven't looked back. We are a stronger side for not having needed him to make it, but I certainly think he had the skills albeit more athletic then football.
