Autopsy flogged by hawks, back to game over at half time times

Game was over before my Hothands hand warmers had a chance to heat up.

Midfield got owned bad. We just didn’t want the ball as much as they did. Contested ball effort was so poor.

And those stupid turnovers expose our backline. It’s not the defenders fault. They push up to apply pressure and then some idiot up forward kicks it straight to a hawks player.

I couldn’t get back to the airport any quicker.

One game doesn’t prove anything definitive - good or bad. What happens for the rest of the season? Bring the good game and we can beat teams that are not at this level, and even challenge the very good teams for at least part of games. Don’t show up and anyone can beat us, and the good teams will beat us badly.

That was mostly pretty sickening and I don’t really want to think about it any more.

See you Thursday night.

Good players/teams have three things:
1. Skills
2. Strategy/smarts
3. Effort

We keep getting high draft picks, and some days when we are on, we can see the skills, and with more time for younger players those skills should continue to improve. Sadly we get sucked in when we see the skills come to the fore, and think all will be OK. But, how often do we show....

We are one of the dumbest collectives in the comp. Too often sucked into play, allowing the opposition to come out the front of a contest, or have multiples out the back, or we jog in transition because we think the ball won't come to us or our opposing number won't get involved in the play, or we wonder why they have three guys running against one in blue and white stripes through the middle on transition. This includes some sort of rule for our team not to be able to lay a sheppard. When X is winning hitouts is it going to dangerous spots and is the structure right to release a player? When to run and gun and when to chip/mark? The list goes on.

Effort is self explanatory - how desperate are you? Do you tackle to make an impact, do you bring a physical presence?

Hawthorn beat us in all three tonight.

What has me worried is that as our skills continue to improve, and perhaps we bring effort and intensity more consistently, we will only get to a level that is similar to the best teams. But there are no signs that we are getting smarter, or implementing a strategy that will mean that we really mix it with the best when the ultimate heat is on in finals. LDU and Powell are prime culprits here. Yea, looks great when they break away from play, or stick a slick handball (I called out Powell's dumb running in the GD thread; the first of the four goals when Freo got a run against us was almost squarely on LDU at a contest despite it being easier to blame Dawson for a subsequent poor spoil). But too often the play opens for the opposition, and we don't seem to know how we are being cut up. And this is very hard to teach, especially to an older player. I hold no hope of Fisher, Hansen, etc learning this, they are of very little real value to the team. I'm not really seeing improvement here from Sheez or Wardlaw. FOS sems to have it in spades and stands out because of it.

We got pantsed in almost every facet of the game tonight, but longer term we need some coaches who can bring some smarts out in the team or we are destined to fizzle out mid-table.

We can go on for a looooooooooong time stuck in shitness with this logic.

They lost to Collingwood by 50. We didn't. They lost badly to a team we drew to. They're not 2007 Geelong.

They methodically outworked us, time and time again. Same old patterns showing up. There are no disclaimers. That was insipid. It will probably be insipid on Thursday, and then we'll probably take another six weeks to warm up enough in order to snag a last-gasp win against Richmond, then wipe our hands and go, 'good season, lads, significant improvement on last year.'

….we’re in shitness for a while longer yet. The depth just ain’t there

He brings that on himself for not setting the team up to play against their style.

They play the same way every week and every time we play them we let them play that way without any attempt to shit it down.

Constantly getting flogged by what you know is largely on the coach.

Unless you are good enough that you know you are going to win every contest playing the way we do against Hawthorn is always going to result in a flogging.

They always push forward of the ball heat we never set up behind the ball to shut it down.
Not arguing that but getting smashed in the middle and contested possessions is not on the coach. Neither is putrid tackling or a low tackle count.

To be honest we can say this but until we actually show improvement for a sustained period we will just be in the same spot year in year, today every player had a down game and if you want to win games let alone make finals or win a few that can’t happen

It’s not an excuse, it’s an opinion. My opinion is equally as useless as yours. 🤣
Oh my opinion sucks and isn’t worth a pinch of shit (I am being serious) but at throughout the journey we are going to play decent teams. If we are going to compete we need to eventually be able to match them

Yes they had centre square dominance but the real damage was done by allowing them to run forward with no attempt to shut it down or set up behind the ball to make it hard to move it quickly forward unopposed.

Clarko is just too pigheaded to turn it ugly like Ross Lyon would. With Hawthorn if you let them turn it into a track meet, expect to get scored against easily and heavily.
