I'd just like to say what an outstanding gesture it was of Freo to acknowledge Brad Johnson Games record as they did.

The club may be struggling a little on-field but these things are what build a clubs "base traditions" and great sportsmanship as was displayed this week can only go toward increasing the competition wide respect for the Dockers and what they stand for.

Great job from the boys and I was proud for them and your club.:thumbsu:

thanks for that. that means a lot to freo
you've gained my respect pie eye
i liked how pav and harvs offered to shake there hands
some teams don't do that

Thanks Pie eyed - appreciate you taking the time to post that.

We generally seem to be able to pay respect on big occassions pretty well - going right back to when we gave Fitzroy what I thought was a pretty maginificent send off at Subi in their last game.

Cheers, and good luck in the finals!!:thumbsu::thumbsu:

(PS - can't wait to smash yez next year though...)

Not to burst our balloon, but I think you'll find that most clubs do this sort of thing. Thanks for your comments anyway Pie Eyed.

The difference was we did it without any fanfare or making public we would it was a straight up respect and acknowledgment of a true champion.

Unlike a certain club who for a coach and captains last game at their home ground, organised the biggest spectacle possible and made sure it was announced to the world so they were all watching the cheese fest...All this while the club knew it was going to be investigated by the AFL in a few months

Even West Coast offer a guard of honour to Shauny Mac when he retired which was very good of them....
But it is good that our club participates and shows respect when it can in big milestones for opposition clubs. It's good sportsmanship and the right thing to do. Cheers for your kind words PE

I was about to start my own thread on this when I realised someone had beaten me to it.Mortified to see it was a Collingwood supporter!!! (not that that's bad, I just feel bad it wasn't a Doggies person).Anyway, it was noticed by the Doggies fans & we commented at the ground of what a class act Freo was to participate in Johnno's big game. Thanks to all.

There was a long and colourful history between the two clubs, and with the coach and player being honoured especially. They were/are icons of the game and deserved some sort of fanfare I would have thought. In fact many Essendon supporters thanked West Coast and commented that they thought the send off they got at Subi was better than the one they got at the MCG the week before.

Half of the presentation wasn't even televised, so I dont know where you get the idea that it was some sort of pulicity stunt? (As if we need any more publicity ).

Are you saying that Hird and Sheedy should have been ignored because the AFL was conducting an investigation? Would have thought the two had nothing to do with each other.

Yes, I agree. Another poster made the point that all clubs do it, but this was not a generic milestone but a games record at a particular club, and that makes the gesture more meaningful. Also, I think the regard for Johnno was genuine, at least judging from Pavlich's handshake- but then what else would anyone expect from Pavlich? He's a deadset champ- hopefully he'll be your 'Johnno' one day!
