Nah, they are just out of form, the effort was there from both of them, got the ball plenty, the execution wasn't what we expect though but I think tonight will be a fillip for our confidence and the skills will come.
That’s the point though. They ‘got the ball plenty’ but the ‘execution wasn’t what we expect’. It’s the growing body of work more so than their one off performance tonight.

Legend:
Eddie Betts -6 goals for the game,300 games, 575 career goals, possibly another goal of the year, best small forward of all time

Good:
Smith - Vintage Brodie in his 150th, dashing, intercepting and a couple of goals to top it off
Tex - Made the most of our quicker entries, solid game (apart from that one kick...)
Murphy - best game in his short career
Mackay - played like it was 2009
Cey - had more of an impact on the game than our other mids

Bad:
Gibbs - lazy kicks, 65% efficiency despite having only three contested possessions, not good enough from a player of his calibre. Not sure the benefit
of playing him over Scholl, probably gets a reprieve with Mileras injury, but Id be sending him back to the reserves.
Lynch - pretty poor first quarter, sort of worked into it (being generous), can join his mate Jenkins

Ugly:
Mileras injury - another defender goes down meaning we play the likes of Kelly

At one point in the last someone kicked it out to Gibbs all alone on the wing and any player with pace would have run and taken 3 bounces and kicked for goal but he looked even hesitant to try it as like he knew the first man behind him would catch him. To me it seems his limited preseason for whatever reason it was has contributed him to losing power in his legs. Someone on here mentioned he had groin issues and that’s what it looks like as he seems to be loping and he never looked like that at Carlton or even last year.

Murphy was as good this week as he was bad last week. His work rate was significantly better.
Rory Sloane was good, but I don't think he's moving all that well.
Very happy for Smithers to play so well after his first couple of kicks were major shanks.
Mackay is not everyone's cup of tea but he hits the line hard and lowers the eyes.
ROB was much improved. Witts is not Goldstein but he competed, presented, gave his mids some good service, and made better decisions.
Eddie is just a delight. As an interstate member I don't get to AO that much, but to be there to see his 300th and be in the pocket when he bent that goal through is a memory I'll treasure.
Kelly was good defensively.
Tex looked better attacking the ball from deeper forward

On the flip side

Gibbs and Lynch are well down on what they could be.
The run and handball was good, but we still insisted on hand balling to teammates who were seriously under the cosh when there were better options.
We still aren't switching play with authority.

Is that a sign he has **** all confidence in the other coaches in the box???

Probably the opposite. He's leaving them in charge of overseeing the patterns and structures that you can't see from ground level.

The reason is because he looks so laid-back and casual when kicking, it seems as though he's not bringing proper intensity to the game. When his pulled kicks fall short, or go to the oppo as much as they have this year, our opinions seem justified. I guess, that's just Gibbs?

I think it's more that the ones he stuffed up were actually rather memorable as they cost us goals tonight.

It's funny, but I found the first quarter fascinating. The oppo pressure (and ours) was fantastic: it was nailbiting to see if there was going to be a burst from either side. In the event, there wasn't, and the viewer spectacle was not great, sure, but tactically gripping. We did very well indeed to resist the pressure.

At quarter time, I knew that the oppo could not possibly keep it up for four quarters, and I was just waiting for us to pounce. We were not playing a rabble and did very well to mentally control this game. My only worry would be if a better oppo maintained this sort of pressure for much longer, would we compound mentally the further the game went on, e.g., 2017 GF?
I had the same feeling. Plenty round me complaining how shit it was, I was fascinated.

Arm wrestle , loved our attitude to get in and do something instead of sweating off. Murphy started it

It is strange the varied reaction people have to Gibbs' games.

He was good tonight IMO. Added some composure across half back, was good in the air when called upon.

Apart from Brodie he is our most direct ball user. Prepared to take a risk going into the corridor or the diagonal.

He misses a couple of kicks though and that's all some people remember. Even though we're collectively a poor kicking team and have few players who can kick with penetration.
During the game I was far harsher on him than on watching the replay.

Greenwood only had 3 clearances, 1 centre clearance and 2 stoppage clearances.

CEY was a bigger difference around the clearances today IMO, not as sexy with some but best game he's played at AFL level.

All up we had only 8 centre clearances to GCS 's 16 centre clearances.

Stoppage clearances we won 31 to 23

I like ROB but it seems like his centre Bounce ruck craft could use a lot of work. Struggles to get off the ground and be effective when he can't engage first, was very apparent against Stanley in the Cats game. Is much better in general stoppages where he can engage first and use his body. Maybe this is adding to our centre clearance woes?

We all have players like that

Scott Stevens was mine

I'd tear my hair out during the game and curse him on here then watch the replay and it was actually only a couple of errors and I'd missed lots of his good stuff

His aerial work was very good tonight.

I've been thinking for a little while that Gibbs gets rid of the ball too quickly. It's almost like he doesn't trust his ability to create space in traffic and hurries to get it moving before any traffic gets there.

Good
We play Gold Coast again this season

I like some of their players and they look like they're building something under Dew but at this stage we have them well and truly covered.

They dont have star power unfortunately. Good enough to win a few games but push comes to shove, no one can take over. I'm guessing they have 0 AA on their list. Today we had Smith set up everything and goal from 60, and Betts kick 6 out his arse.

Both never stopped presenting, Lynch in particular worked hard to provide a regular outlet

Also i was watching the play when Eddie kicked his miracle goal, my mate All_In was trying to get my attention, what was the fight going on in the middle of the ground?
Asked the same thing, haven’t seen an answer yet.

What do people think of Lukosius?

Smooth mover, excellent skills. Quite agile.

Don't think he'll be taking many contested marks in the near future.

Should GC get him in the weights room so he can compete better - like we did with Tex? Or should they develop him as that roaming half forward who covers the ground and is too agile for opponents his height? Asking for a friend.

Eddie plays his best footy not trying to take high marks. Perfect example of that tonight.
Hberg was not spectacular, but he was a presence and capable.kf marking the ball.

Also saw Walker playing deeper where he is more dangerous as he is generally a good judge of a lead.

Keep him mobile.

He'll be a more agile St Nick.

If they can pair him with Wright long term it'll be fearsome

The more exposure to AFL quality opposition he gets the better he will get like most rookie Ruckmen new to the level.....He is 5 games into his AFL career and more than held his own against an experienced Ruck in Jarrod Witts today that is at the top of his game.

Perfect Lynch replacement (for us).

Eddie, Smith, Keath, Murphy, Crouches were fantastic. Very strong effort from CEY. Nicely played, Mackay.

Brilliant to have Greenwood back - he should start in the centre square and then go forward.

Solid effort by ROB, enjoyed having Himmelberg out there.

Tex was a lot better and as mentioned he seemed to enjoy being more the FF.

Lynch was just awful, his knock on to Eddie aside. He telegraphs his passes and they're either cut off or he misses the target anyway. His only 'move' is the duck-under-the-opponent's-tackle-and-risk-decapitation again.

Feels like Talia is on his last legs. He's unable to blanket opponents like he once did and provides no rebound. Please prove me wrong and improve, mate.

So damn frustrating to see Milera go down - Hanley is an absolute ball of muscle and power; hit him like a rocket.
