You can pin why we won't win a premiership this season on that third quarter (this is regardless of if we won or not).

We copped the same relentless pressure against Richmond and structurally broke down. Port did it and again we broke down. Is it talent? Is it injuries? Is it our structures are too outside? That is the big question, but that is the game you cut your losses with a side.

Imagine getting in front with 40 seconds left and then losing a 3 on 1 to let anonymous hack Stephen Motlop do the only thing he's done all game

Why Dougie didn't stop and be front and centre is mind boggling. He would have known we had numerical advantage but chose to be a wrecking ball and take out our numbers.

Well...

Firstly, full credit to Port. They killed us for most of the match across the ground.

We were in front for 75% of the game yet at 3/4 time we trailed them by a massive 80 possessions and still TRAILED tackles 56-42. We also lost contested ball to one of the worst at it this year. That's fundamentally unacceptable and unaccountable football from the whole group. No excuses for that. That's desire and want at the crunch. Comebacks when the game is gone don't erase that.

The main concern is on field leadership when things slip. We seem unable to deal with it when things shift against us, during play. It's like we rigidly wait until the break to alter it. It happened in the GF but it's also happened against Essendon, St Kilda, Gold Coast and Carllton this year, too. The game was realistically gone at the end and we would've stolen it, highway robbery.

The obvious "sloppiness" that we saw in the past fortnight, and the flicky-dinky stuff that even the bottom teams capitalised on, was well and truly shown up tonight.

Looking at it objectively and without Showdown goggles, it's a long season but as it pans out I suspect this will be a significant loss. We will now need to win one or two extra away games than what we might've thought in order to get Top 4.

We're only making up the numbers this year. Our midfield struggles to go with the better sides, our tackling is atrocious and Jacobs has been beaten in every game this season. 2007-2009 all over again.

I always worried since port had the week off last week and this was their grandfinal that they might challenge us. Devo'd about Sloaney, he woulda been handy.

Pyke needs to go defensive sooner and with more players, at least two. To slow to react.

Umpires need to piss off and just let the game run, not manufacture shit.

I'm pretty sure ports first goals in the second and third were from free kicks, first too possibly.

Hardly any free kicks paid in the first half and despite us dominating, the free kick count was even, or perhaps even slightly in their favour, 11 to 12 I reckon it was.

In the second half we got three free kicks to their ten. We finish with 14 to 23.

Seems chopping of the arm against the crows was non existent tonight, throws are back in, we couldn't buy a holding the ball against them in the first half, then matt crouch gets that no prior doosey right at the start of the second half.

Anyway, considering our injuries, we are still travelling alright.

Annoying loss tho.

No injuries hopefully, poor old gov.

Laird was a gun.

Dunno why so much criticism for gibbs...was down but not disgraceful.

Got beaten out of the center pretty badly.

CEY and Greenwood are going ok.

Poholke had a purple patch late in the game which was a help.

Gooch down a bit.

Talia a gun, gave Dixon nothing.

EDIT pyke shoulda not put so many back in that last 40 seconds. Only needed two or three at most. That was the mistake hinkley made to allow us to catch up, going full on defensive. Dont try to defend the lead, try to win the game.

Also is bigfooty glacially slow for everyone else tonight?

I have seen some shit umpiring performances but that last half takes the cake. What was clear was the umpires copped some abuse at half time and two of the umpires umpired for the cheers clearly, plucking soft free after soft free for Port and not actually getting the basics of umpiring right by not bringing Port players standing the mark to actually where the mark was. That HTB against Matt Crouch was purely for the crowd. The first half I thought they were great. I don't know whether they were told off or what for letting the play go in the first half but they were shit after half time.

Senior players.

Where were you?

Depleted midfield. Douglas gets just 15 touches and Gibbs crawled to 24. Pathetic.

Mackay. Back to form.

Jacobs. Can't tap to our players to save himself.

Not. Good. Enough.

Only saw the second half which was pretty hard to watch.

Very weak midfield performance in the 3rd. Not one player had a good quarter.

Forwards did very well at the end there after actually getting a couple of clearances.

Was all set up for an epic win and that collision at the end really sunk me. Also the set up to have zero half forwards at the centre bounce. Need to leave a couple there.

Some very dubious free kicks to

Well we played like shit for most of the game and got screwed by the umps yet they only just pipped us.

We would have won that game if Jake Kelly wasn't on the field. He was putrid and needs a spell in the 2's.

Only Laird and Seedsman (maybe Atkins) can be proud of their performance.

Good
  • ???
  • The 2 minutes of life we showed in the last quarter.
  • CEY and Greenwood good in patches.
Bad
  • In the second half: approximately 22 players.
  • Mackay's miss.
Ugly
  • Our setup at the last centre bounce.
  • Dougie cleaning up McGovern.
  • Tex's game, and the certainty that the media will be back onboard the ''worst captain in the league'' bandwagon.
  • Umpiring.
  • Our lack of effort in the 2nd half.

Robbie Gray - Star. Should have been double teamed. Leaving him 1v1 so many times lost the game. Special performance.

Good

Greenwood - I think we have a new suitor for next captain. Got those clearances at the end.
Yolmen
Almost stole it, usually we completely roll over

Bad
Midfield slaughtered, no Sloane no heart no midfield.
Defending at the end. We just threw ourselves at the ball and fell over rather than use our brains to defend.

Ugly
The captain, carbon copy his notorious GF game.
Jenkins disappeared again. All his improvement counts for nothing since he just shrinks when it matters.

We never deserved that, most played very poorly.

Sauce didn't have his mind in the game was an embarrassment.

Pohlke shouldn't have played, not on him just a shit selection yet again. Murphy better at this stage.

Campo and Clarke the two incompetent buffoons looking after our engine room. Pyke deserves shit for this too, if he had some balls he would make the call on them.

What is it 10 years for Clarke and 8 for Campo? When will their time be up?
