Hendo was great.
Taylor did his job on a good match-up for him.
Rucks were ok
Selwood back in amongst it
Atkins justified his selection

Kolo and Henry terrible
Hawk - mentally weak - play-on snap ridiculous.
Duncan - Why can’t he have a big final!
Small forwards offered nothing, including Gaz
Rohan did his usual disappearing trick
O’Connor - Was he dragged away from contest?
Stewart - is he our next captain? Needed to show it!

The rest were forgettable or the night

Every year it is the same.

- Midfielders sh*t the bed, get very little heat from the masses for it.
- Knock on effect that the defence is under much more pressure, get pilloried by the masses for it.
- Nuffies blame the coach for player skill errors.

Tonight starts and ends with them Selwood gave his all. Duncan got a bit of the footy but was poor, Guthrie and Menegola were down on the season. Dangerfield tried but didn't have a massive impact. Parfitt was putrid.

As a result guys like Dahlhaus, Miers, Atkins, Ablett are starved for supply. Hawkins has an off night and it is all she wrote.
Not being able to handle the heat in the middle causes the problems down back, those guys get slammed and the midfield repeatedly in finals get off lightly.

If we take our chances in the first half we have a decent lead and the talk isn't about this being the coach's fault. Miss easy shots on goal and it is somehow all on him. Utter nonsense.

Perfectly correct. Midfield non existent coupled with dumb mistakes.
Let them play exactly how they like it, like hitting a tall brick wall coming out of our defence.
Our small midfielders out of position, nowhere near it. Ping, Port marks and straight back in.

Kudos to Port's ability to outplan and outplay us, never thought they had a chance to reverse a 10 goal loss.
The constant poor feed to Hawk (Parfitt, Rohan, Mies, Dahl,Ablett) rather than taking any accountability
themselves rankles, expecting him to kick 6 again.

Art Vandelay_ will tell you he was good..so wait for it...no doubt he will post a spirited, yet delusional defence of Kolo. .

Kolo very poor yet again. Trade him for Witherden....at least he delivers to team mates.

Miers was terrible until late...Henderson our best.
No he wasn't great. Well this is awkward for you, set up a remark that I don't share. Nice try though.
In our best side based off the body of work? Absolutely.

Witherden in the team? Ok, I can live with that.
In Kolo's place. Nah.

Taylor in his last year. Hendo not far behind.
No way we throw away a competent tall defender for a dime a dozen flanker.

Conversion in front of goal was our biggest issue tonight; Port made the most of their opportunities & we sh*t the bed when it came to our chances

Across the match we had more scoring shots than Port - 13 (P) vs 17 (C), and more scoring shots in 3 of the 4 quarters

Q1-
Port: 2.1 13 (3 scoring shots)
Cats: 1.4 10, (5 scoring shots) add in Hawkins missed shot & what should have been a set shot for Parfitt after the siren if not for the handball to Ablett, and that's 7 shots on goal in the first quarter
Port with less scoring shots win the quarter by 3 points

Q2-
Port: 2.1 13 (3 scoring shots again)
Cats: 2.3 15 (another 5 scoring shots
Cats win the second quarter by 2 points, but trail at half time even after 10 scoring shots to 6

Q3-
Port: 3.2 20 (5 scoring shots)
Cats: 1.1 7 (2 scoring shots)
Port finally have more scoring shots and they make it count winning the quarter by 13 points

Q4-
Port: 2.0 12 (2 scoring shots)
Cats: 1.4 10 (5 scoring shots, just like the first quarter)
Port win the quarter by 2 points making the most of their chances

The only quarter we genuinely struggled to get the ball forward was the 3rd quarter, but we should have gone in at half time 3 or 4 goals up at least and you never know how that 3rd quarter then plays out.

It was also clear during that first half that when we kicked a goal it shut up the crowd, and by not getting a run on and kicking away when we had our chances in the first half we shot ourselves in the foot
According to biggy_boy, Port were unlucky?

One thing I will say is that I can't understand why we went away from our game plan that seemed to serve us so well early/mid season. At that point I thought it was the first time I had seen a clear game plan from Scott and it was working. The slow it down, chip sideways, keepings off type of game plan. I haven't seen that for 6 weeks and I don't really understand why tbh. I might be reading it all wrong, but I can't work out why we wanted to play quickly when to me that slow play was working so well. It seemed that no-one could touch us when we played that way, but I haven't seen a lot of it since. Others on here are saying the slow play is what cost us, but I didn't see it tbh. I though we went way too quick and it didn't work for us.

Anyway, at least we've given ourselves a 2nd chance. I'm not confident at all, but who knows - we're still in it - just.

Hawkins 0.4 from 5 set shots and Dahlhaus, Atkins, and Duncan in the middle 7 points down midway through the last in a pivotal centre bounce. That's pretty much it.

Inconceivable to have 2 of the greatest midfielders to have played the game in the last 25 years and not have them in the middle for that bounce. Inconceivable.

We need someone like Steven.

Steven would turn it over with our current game plan of precision kicking. If we have any hope we need to revert to a more chaotic, riskier game plan like the Tigers. Steven would be better suited to playing in the middle and just thumping it forward.

I'd do that trade.
Kolo has reached his ceiling. Will be a good handy player but this is it. Some more to work on with Witherden.

Actually, we desperately need some polish across half back flank. A couple of Daniel Rich types.

Its interesting you say that about Henry, I think he attacks the ball with intent and can mark. I find that Kolo is a bit dopey at times when under pressure. I feel more at ease with Henry going for it under pressure than I am with Kolo.

Who did we have on Motlop in defence? I wasn't paying attention, he got a lot of easy ones. Was it Henry? or another player?
Stewart was on Motlop

Lack of pace, playing zone accentuated that. Scott has to ditch the leaking zone that doesn't hold up in finals. Narkle in for Atkins or Dahlhaus who hardly laid a tackle. Narkle gives us that extra midfielder if Dangerfield goes forward. Clark in for Taylor or Henry.
Will be for Henry, Taylor probably playing his last game.

He was 0.5 from 6 set shots, right?

As much as Scott has frustrated me in the past, he cannot be blamed for Hawkins missing 6 goals.
I don’t care what anyone says, Hawkins has cost us potentially 2 flags.

What a ridiculous comment, the majority of his shots were hard on the angle and about 30% chance of kicking. Our only other dangerous fwd looks like danger. Our second tier players are found out against the better teams, our form seems to drop away after 13 or 14 games for the last few years.

Where is our youth? Port have butters, rozee, duursma, Marshall, Amon, Burton all 23 or younger plus Farrell and woodcock not in the side. Yet all we do I grab another 26 year old from another club. You need to have a blend of youth and experience.

Why do we continue to play Harry and Hendo in the same team.
Surely Duncan, Guthrie and menegola will be trading for first rounders we need to be bold instead of just getting players from other clubs

Yeah wtf is with that. We're short on small forwards, so we go get one - then we play him high
We have to play him high because he's got a tank and there are others who need to play deeper than him. I said in the lead up there's no room for him in the side with Ablett in the team. I think maybe the best solution we currently have is to bring Fogarty in and rotate Menegola through the high half forward role
