Ugly night...had the chances, then couldn't break Port's high-up defensive structures when it mattered.

Our lack of foot-pace when without the ball is still a major issue - just no run.

Port deserved the win, but we're still in it. Without hope, there's nothing.
Lack of pace, playing zone accentuated that. Scott has to ditch the leaking zone that doesn't hold up in finals. Narkle in for Atkins or Dahlhaus who hardly laid a tackle. Narkle gives us that extra midfielder if Dangerfield goes forward. Clark in for Taylor or Henry.

And then there are those supporters who stick with their team, even when it is not fun and that team almost folds due to finances. It may even take them 44 years to see them win a premiership, but the real supporters stick fast. That is the difference between them and the fair weather supporters.
Yep. Bitterly frustrated tonight but I am nowhere near throwing in the towel. It hurts and sucks to see the same result of us collapsing in finals but heck me, look at some other clubs. Geelong still brings me a lot of joy.

I think its been around for about 100 years...
1 plays 4. They finsihed on top of the ladder.

Its not rocket science nor is it new.

This season has a pandemic running as well so the home games concept in HA season has been whacky.

But PA playing this Qf at home was eanred by them and had nothing to do with us losing.

Mthc Duncan on KROCK said we were beaten contest to contest. Thats work rate to the core.

Ground had nothing to do wth it. PA earned it.

GO Catters

Ok I will again ask this question that you keep ignoring.

Did Port Adelaide earn a final in a fair and even fixture, or were they advantaged?

Answer the question, your not Dan Andrews.

And the game being in port had nothing to do with us losing, are you taking the piss?

Henry doesn't deserve to pull the hoops on ever again.

Just on that point - i think Justin Longmuir of Freo has got the right idea - he comes accross as a nice guy - but he is ruthless - and he has got a simple philosophy - if they are not good enough eg McCarthy Matera etc - then get rid of them

With Henry - his game tonight - - caught holding the ball in the 3rd qtr - and if you go back to the Eagles game - he was hopelessly outmarked right on the 3qtr time siren - his papers should have been stamped then - he is not good enough - put him on the trade table and see if you can get anything for him

The 3rd qtr tonight was like the Rich 3rd qtr - deplorable

Geel need to have a Nth Melb type cull - but rather than delist - see if you can get anything for them 1st - it wont be much - but you can add it to the 3 early picks theve got already

I think if they get eliminated next week ( who really cares - it will be next week or the week after ) - the president Carter should ( but he wont of course ) come out and say - look we are having a change of philosophy and say we are prepared to go down the ladder - but we are going to go the youth approach - that would be the sensible thing to do - given those 3 picks theve got

I mean the Geelong footy club - has become like the blooody lost dogs/animal refuge shelter where lost and strayed and troubled former locals come back to a caring home

No more top ups please - put a focus on youth

Kolodjashnij tonight put together one of the worst finals performances I have seen in recent memory from a Geelong player.

Miers was extremely disapppointing as well.

Henderson well played. Arguably his best game for the Cats.

Art Vandelay_ will tell you he was good..so wait for it...no doubt he will post a spirited, yet delusional defence of Kolo. .

Kolo very poor yet again. Trade him for Witherden....at least he delivers to team mates.

Miers was terrible until late...Henderson our best.

Conversion in front of goal was our biggest issue tonight; Port made the most of their opportunities & we sh*t the bed when it came to our chances

Across the match we had more scoring shots than Port - 13 (P) vs 17 (C), and more scoring shots in 3 of the 4 quarters

Q1-
Port: 2.1 13 (3 scoring shots)
Cats: 1.4 10, (5 scoring shots) add in Hawkins missed shot & what should have been a set shot for Parfitt after the siren if not for the handball to Ablett, and that's 7 shots on goal in the first quarter
Port with less scoring shots win the quarter by 3 points

Q2-
Port: 2.1 13 (3 scoring shots again)
Cats: 2.3 15 (another 5 scoring shots
Cats win the second quarter by 2 points, but trail at half time even after 10 scoring shots to 6

Q3-
Port: 3.2 20 (5 scoring shots)
Cats: 1.1 7 (2 scoring shots)
Port finally have more scoring shots and they make it count winning the quarter by 13 points

Q4-
Port: 2.0 12 (2 scoring shots)
Cats: 1.4 10 (5 scoring shots, just like the first quarter)
Port win the quarter by 2 points making the most of their chances

The only quarter we genuinely struggled to get the ball forward was the 3rd quarter, but we should have gone in at half time 3 or 4 goals up at least and you never know how that 3rd quarter then plays out.

It was also clear during that first half that when we kicked a goal it shut up the crowd, and by not getting a run on and kicking away when we had our chances in the first half we shot ourselves in the foot
With respect but these threads do my head in

We domt kick goals because the ethos isnt to attack, its to play a slow cautious build up

Its the root cause for our failure

We lost the game in the 1st half. Killed them and should've been at least 4 goals up.

Wow, looking back over the thread now that I've written my bullshit and I am surprised at just how vitriolic this place is; maybe I am more surprised that I am less disappointed...

Like I said, I thought we played a Finals brand of footy, but unfortunately we absolutely muffed our chances - more scoring shots than Port and we were on top for all but a brief (and admittedly decisive) period in the 3rd quarter.
I expected we'd lose, but I am oddly at peace with the way in which we lost; gave a good account of ourselves imo.

cats looked to me, a better group than port
Mistakes really killed us tonight
Why they don't play Ratagolea is a confusion to me
Hawk gets double teamed and we fall to pieces up forward
We desperately need a second key forward for Hawk's benefit.
Selwood was a soldier tonight
Rhys tried hard
Henderson really good
O'Connor played really well under pressure
Guthrie and Blicavs very ordinary again in finals

sh*t game terrible coaching, Geelong chocked it in the first half should have been 4 goals up.

The crowd played a huge part in Port winning that, and its unjust the game was in Adelaide. Just like tomorrow is wrong for the game to be in Perth and for Richmond to play Brisbane in Brisbane. These finals should have been played at Neutral cites, Port Brisbane West Coast have not earned home finals from a fair and even playing field.

Nah. The location, crowd and umpiring didn’t factor into the result in my opinion. The cats had plenty of chances to have a sizeable lead in the first half. From then on, it was more about the lack of composure from the cats and the power’s pressure game and dirty tigers style.

Just 2 things that absolutely piss me off

how many times week in week out going forward do we have 4 forwards going for a mark and no one staying down
Also, people saying our back lines continuity is elite need to start watching how many times our defenders take each other out then it resulting in a goal.
Happens 2/3 times every week
Henderson was good but he came into the pack, went the spoil, took out himself, Dixon and Taylor, punched the ball to their goalsquare and Motlop ran on for a cheap goal.

We have dumb footballers.

Watching the replay and I'm not sure for the whole game but Kolo was running with Motlop when the ball was bombed long to Dixon in the 2nd qtr, Taylor is on Dixon, and Henderson is able to get back as the 3rd man up and gets a fist on the ball towards goals. But Kolo stops and Motlop keeps running just before the marking contest and it's actually Harry that ends up having to give chase to Motlop running into an open goal because Kolo is still standing there. Really poor defensive work by Kolo there and was purely a lack of work ethic to run with Motlop.

Where else would you play it? Port earned a home final. Matches can be played in Adelaide. Therefore they earned a home final. Why would they be forced to play in QLD?

If the roles were reversed and WA and SA were locked down, and Port got a "home" final against us at the MCG how is that fair?

Mids were garbage as per usual in finals...

Danger and Selwood the best of them. No surprise.

Parfitt was one of the few who showed intensity and didn't look scared. He seemed unfazed by the occasion. Okay, that's a positive. Tbh if he wasn't such a poor decision-maker and ball user I would probably like him. But sadly he IS poor when he has the ball. Reliably so. He annoys me more than anyone else on our list.

Duncan was meh. Had a few good moments here and there but overall didn't offer enough. I really hope that pass off to Hawkins was due to not knowing how much time there was on the clock (which is bad enough) instead of just abdicating responsibility because he *knew* how much time there was on the clock and didn't want the pressure of an after the siren kick before a booing crowd. We have a right to expect more of one of our senior mids. Mitch has played 17 finals now. How many of those have been genuinely A-grade finals performances? The Sydney Semi Final in 2017 is literally the only one I can think of that I'd describe as better than B-grade standard.

As others have pointed out, Guthrie went back to the toe pokes tonight. Could not possibly be more disappointed by him, since it feels like he's back to square one now. If all of the improvement he made isn't going to change his finals performances, then what's the point? The main change to his game this year has been the smoothness of his ground ball gets in traffic and in contested situations. None of that was anywhere to be seen tonight. Instead we got a return to the cop-out efforts of old.

Menegola was a passenger, as has been the case many times before with him in finals.
