Cmon, it wasn't so bad...let's just get some perspective here...

I think we should extend Chris Scott's contract after this hard fought loss. He's a great coach with that stoic commitment to that One-Tall forward line and that methodical slow one paced possession at all costs sideways footy. It's beautiful to behold.

Honestly though, I love how Chris sticks to his guns with his Plan A (Plan B - do Plan A) game plan in the face of finals failure year after year after year after...it's truly awe-inspiring.

Another three year extension on his contract to 2025 should show our appreciation for Chris' commitment to failure...and our own commitment to mediocrity.

A Finals record of 4-12 since 2012 is amazing...Let's keep it up GFC...thanks Chris!

Hawkins missed two goals. The other 3 were all incredibly unlikely.
Yes the big fella is copping a caning on here and he was the best key forward in the ground by a mile...missed two he shouldn’t have and the rest were tough set shots.

This was a very winnable game
Hawkins kicked the worst I've ever seen him kick, he just needed to kick 2 of them.
Motlop's goals were unforgivable, how are we allowing a small forward to get goal side? How do we flood a backline, they kick sideways for 1 min then enter the forward line and they get a grubber over the back because we have no one on the last line of defense?
Taylor is well past it, he can't intercept mark anymore and is a liability if the ball ever touches the ground near him.
Danger missing from the contest at crucial times.
Henry is our worst player in high pressure games
The complete lack of game awareness cost us 2 shots at goal right on qtr time sirens.
I feel a contributor to our loss was Ports ability to make tackles stick (especially out of the center), too many times they broke free of ours and hacked it forward.
Control does not be chaos, we have seen this too many times before with Richmond, its so bloody effective in finals footy, just tackle well, apply pressure and get it forward.
Its interesting you say that about Henry, I think he attacks the ball with intent and can mark. I find that Kolo is a bit dopey at times when under pressure. I feel more at ease with Henry going for it under pressure than I am with Kolo.

Who did we have on Motlop in defence? I wasn't paying attention, he got a lot of easy ones. Was it Henry? or another player?

Perhaps both come in. Clark needs to come in for either Kolo or Henry. Taylor is done though he battled manfully tonight. Rohan and Miers absolute failures. Completely ineffectual. I'd even consider bringing DeKoning in. He won't go any worse.

No way on DEK but I agree with the rest.

And probably cost St Kilda a flag in 2009 when his shot clearly hit the post and was paid a goal!
You going to ignore that demonstrative behavior double goal that has never happened before or since?

Hit the drat and look for pace and run. We're far too slow.

That was the difference. Scarlett needs to stop the crap with this tall defense and get with reality.

Henderson was sensational tonight and deserves to stay on the list. Taylor is cooked ... he can't play in the next final. Henry was woeful as was Koldjashnij.

We need a defensive restructure.

Tried to tell you that all week long.
In fact, there are may on here who can see it except the coaches. Bizarre.

Clark is the future. Play the boy. He hasn't even been poor in the games he has played either. It's different if he was a massive liability but he's got spark. Needs to play.

Mate really? How are we not a finals team? We won enough games to qualify for finals. Nearly all of them away. We are a finals team. What cost us tonight was one of our leaders. Tom Hawkins.
Have a look at their midfield tonight compared to ours.
How big they were, how strong they were compared to ours.
And how they attacked the player and the ball.
No fuss, crash through and get it moving
That's finals footy and its a different game.
It happens every year. We are not made for finals.

Its about time some us apologize to the likes of Biggy Boy, Partidge and Bobby. They all said this would continue if we kept scott. And they said this 6 years ago. Scott has been an obvious problem for 6 years. They have been mocked continously on this bored. Often by the mods.

They were 100 percent right.
Mocked, banned, driven away from the board.

Because they wanted the best for the club.

flipping livid. To put up a performance like that is disgusting.
Worst effort from the back six all year. I love harry but he should’ve retired last season. Slow, ineffective, but worst of all he’s lost his kick. Can’t kick 30 metres anymore. Hard to watch a champion struggle like that. Worst game from Stewart, bews, kolo, and Taylor all year.
I’m not a fan of Scott but you can’t blame that one on him. Having said that I could’ve thrown the tv out the window when danger lined up at FF to start the last quarter...
Guthrie, what happened to you? Worst game all year. Reverted to old habits.
Hawkins, wow I’m not even going to start with him.
Blitz can hold his head high.

Taylor battled well but is finished. Can't play Kolo and Henry in the same team. One or the other. We need far more run and carry. Clark just has to come in.
Taylor beat his man. For a fullback to play on the AA CHF and keep him to 6 touches and a goal is a better effort than McKenzie down the other end, he only got saved by Hawkins being poor.

Kolo and Henry >>>> Clark.

Less convinced on Clark than I am Parfitt.
He isn't the answer. A proven HBF player in the vein of Saad, Maynard etc is what is needed. Not a raw prospect that might come good (not saying we trade for one) but Clark is just as much the answer as Constable, Narkle, Zuthrie or Simpson are. These guys are less talented than the guys in the team.

And before it is raised, we don't do rebuilds.

Henry is bloody ordinary.

Down 2 goals in the 4th and we lineup at a centre bounce with Dalhaus, Atkins and Duncan and concede the clearance and a goal.

The Chris Scott special.
Atkins and Dalhaus should never be near the midfield. Atkins did nothing tonight. 2 tackles for a guy only in the team for that skill. He should not play next week and as much as I like him Harry T should hang up his boots. Henderson was fantastic.

If you cant see why Scott is the major fault with this club then that's on you because its obvious where we are deficient.

We have been out worked in every final we've played, Port Adelaide first to the ball all night. That goes to intent and preparedness for the contest, something we have severely lacked for the duration of Scotts tenure. It is not a coincidence that our record after a bye and record in finals has been so poor for so long.

When the pressure goes up we start moving the ball down the line which lets Port back into the contest. We go into our shell and start taking the low risk kicks to a pack on the wing which if we dont mark, falls to ground and then we get out worked around the contest, lose the ball and that creates a scoring shot for them. Or it creates an entry inside 50 along the boundary line for us which is always a low percentage set shot.

The only time we looked like taking a mark inside 50 tonight was when Stanley was down there early in the first quarter. It shouldnt be surprising to anyone that we look better up forward if we play two tall forwards, but it seems like it is a surprise to Scott. Almost every one of Hawkins set shots was a low percentage shot, tight on the boundary 45-50 out from goal. Port Defenders stopping his lead up the middle, pushing him wide to take a mark on the boundary line. Defenders love forwards taking marks there because it takes a miracle to kick the goal.

When we looked good was off half back, going direct through the middle. But then we go inside 50 and it's Rohan flying from 3 deep who cant take the mark while Hawkins has 3 defenders hanging off him. If Scott thinks that's what a good forward line looks like you need to reconsider whether you can coach AFL football. Letting defenders molest Hawkins all night while relying on Danger and Rohan to kick a score is not how we win a flag.

Then there is the utterly stupid way in which we handle the ball inside 50. Rohan drops the mark and then we overuse the ball by hand and move it backwards out of our forward 50, only to turn it over and create an opportunity off half back for Port. Again that's coaching and training, the good teams have composure and bring pressure when they have it loose inside 50 which results in the ball being locked in. Meanwhile we try to create the perfect shot on goal by handpassing it 50 times to try and create space that isnt there. It's no wonder we look good during the home and away season, we can create space against crap teams. But when finals come and it isnt there because they out work us we just turn it over time and time again.

Finally its selection that is the worst stain on Scotts coaching tenure. Miers in a ****ing final, what is that about? Anyone can see he doesnt have the ability to step his game up when the pressure is on. Everyone of his shit games this year has come against quality opposition. But he keeps getting selected. Dare i say the same is true for Mark O'Connor, who did **** all tonight.

Miers and O'Connor out for Clark and maybe Narkle, but i have no confidence in any of that really, but the message needs to start being sent that if you cant step up for finals you're out. But the real inclusion we need is Jenkins. We need the second genuine forward, not a resting ruckman. Scott, please ****ing see sense and logic for once in your miserable existence and bring him in as a forward. Stop torturing us with this crap.

Rant over, time to drink.

EDIT: And what the **** is with that midfield after we kicked the goal in the last quarter? Dahl, Atkins and Duncan at the bounce when the game is there to be won still? How does that even happen? The players deserve to take some of the blame. But if you cant see how bad a coach Scott is when the heat is on you're just ****ing blind.

Taylor battled well but is finished. Can't play Kolo and Henry in the same team. One or the other. We need far more run and carry. Clark just has to come in.
Anyone who thinks Kolodjasnij is a good footballer needs a knock to the head. Clark is poor under pressure too but at least he provides run. We need to focus on this area in future drafts.

The worst game I've seen Henry play. He tries hard but he's an intercept defender or a forward. I should have stuck with my first impressions of O'Connor too .. he's useless.

I think he usually gets at least one of the three on the boundary and like you say two easy ones. Should've had three. I'll give him a pass for the one in the last quarter since he knew he had to rush it
And in the H&A game we kicked to him right in front of goal. Simple game plan that worked. Tonight it didn't. Out coached????

Not a single player that shouldn't feel embarrassed about their performance tonight. Squibs, chokes, fumbles, disappearing acts and far too many blokes are repeat offenders.
Backs - stupid decisions and constantly in one another's way while not protecting each other.
Mids- can't tackle, always giving 3 or 4 handballs to blokes under pressure when a quick kick from the stoppage is what's required.
Forwards - finger me drunk...
Coaches- complicit in allowing the same repeat offenders perform in the same old way in finals.
Cats are mentally fragile at best.
Henderson was good. So was selwood. Danger not bad.

One last point: yes it's easy to think if Hawk had kicked three and maybe Stanley the dolly he missed etc etc we would have won. Yes, on paper. But Port had us completely dead to rights in the second half, if they had to score more they would have. Every time they won a contest they had numbers streaming forward. I don't think we would have held a four goal half time lead. The problems are a lot deeper than the inaccuracy that ostensibly lost us the game.
