Than us- YES. We don't get to see their whole healthy list. I look at us and there is very little decent depth. I love our effort but we have many bottom 6 players.

So we've been exceeding expectations as our list has weakened?

From that I can understand your admiration of CS, but to whom / what do you then allocate blame for the decline of our list?

Performing above expectation, without advancing, also suggests we're doing no more than treading water at best. It's been 8 years now..... Are we going to swim, or sink?

Watching how cooked the Pies looked in the GWS game made it obvious how much of an opportunity we squandered when we failed to show up against them in the EF. If we had have won that we'd surely have been a much better chance against Richmond in the GF, having had equal amount of rest as them and having Hawkins playing. If only we knew how to play after a bye..

A hundred times more sensible than anything you have had to contribute on this.
Just continue with the do gooder posts on here. We are so impressed!
Give me a break. Looking for a mod job??
Ridiculous
Winning more finals than hawks in last 4 years. Most pathetic post I’ve ever read and you back it up. Complete airhead!

Yet pre game in here fans were saying we would beat pies and tigers. Strange!
Btw have a look at Giants form leading into September. Did you see them play hawks in Sydney it was horrible, but they got their s**t together .
We blew a great chance to be in a GF. Deal with it son!

Last time GWS played the Hawks in Sydney they won by 9 points - so not sure what you're going on about

Abuse is not on....have a day to cool off.

Oh that’s right you’ve dealt with the loss already.
So easy!
Contentment is the goal! 3 prelim losses in 4 years and you’re happy. Good luck.

No, I'm disappointed, but not incandescent with rage. Like I've already said, our form for months was ordinary and so I thought a premiership would be a long shot. You also ignored my point about the nature of finals, and the fact the minor premiership means little statistically.

3 prelim losses in 4 years is what it is. I'm old enough to recall Collingwood losing four GF's in five years. As much as I enjoyed that, I didn't think that they were shit, or that Hafey couldn't coach, or that they accepted mediocrity, or that those years were a fail.

Do top 2 H&A finishers usually make the Grand Final? I dunno the statistics.
Also not sure of interstate teams that get 11 H&A games compared to our 8 Or 9 are artificially inflated by home games.
Would be interesting to see. Would be strange if it's just us this stuff happens to.

That's me also

My cuz messaged me this morning to ask how I was going. I replied with exhausted but I'll be fine and that GWS is my new team.

Her response was laughter and "could be worse and be a Carlton supporter"

That's it - yes it's disappointing to not be making it past preliminary finals, but I'm damn proud of the club for continually being in the position to compete each year. There are supporters of teams that would love to be playing finals year after year and just have that bit of hope the may actually compete for a premiership.

Be disappointed with the lost last night, but that shouldn't stop people looking at the positive takeaways from the season or finding joy in things like our next generation coming throw & excitement of Ratugolea in full flight etc.

Bitter disappointment. We had it on a platter and f’ed up.

We started the game as well as we could have imagined but failed to show in the 2nd half.

I hope the young players have learnt what it takes to play in a GF, let alone make one. I just hope it doesn’t all come together too late, and that our mini-rebuild will have come to nothing.

The fact we comprehensively dominated the Tigers in the first half shows we had the wherewithal to win this game.

It seems the players and the coaching staff were too busy bathing in their own bathwater at the main break and forgot to steel themselves for at least a competitive second half.

The quality of play in that second half was some of the most uncompetitive and error prone "football" we produced for the entire season.

So much for the recycled rubbish of playing our best footy at the business end … that hasn't happened for years.

Nice post!

Since the beginning of the AFL era, Geelong have won more games than any other team, played in the most finals series, picked up a few flags, and played in eight GF's. The ability to remain in the hunt while transitioning from the 07-11 team deserves more credit than it is given. As you point out, we are a fortunate supporter base.

When posters bandy about 'accepting mediocrity' I tend to laugh a little bit. I can actually remember what 'mediocre' Geelong teams looked like, and I haven't seen one for very long time.

Weathering the disappointments is an essential part of the whole irrational and life-long business of following your team. And besides, there's always next year.

Why do you ask about the list declining?
Self-explanatory imho.
Recurrent top ladder finishes-->average draft selections hence the top-ups so that we don't bottom out, and the ageing decline of our immortals, who are irreplaceable.
We are on a ride, and I am enjoying it. I don't know where we are going, but the scenery is amazing at times, dreary at others. We were not guaranteed a premiership, but they are not dying wondering. Geelong never sinks. And even if we do hit the bottom for a while, we NEVER stay there.

"do gooder" "airhead"??? Name calling is not an argument. If you want to debate the points I made go ahead. "we are not impressed", The royal "we" I did not know I was dealing with her majesty.💋

He got sanctioned...move on....

I ask because we're treading water, and we either tire and sink, or take a breath and start swimming.

Coming 3rd in an 18 team National Comp, with a coach that many people here despise, and with several promising young players, does not mean treading water in my pov. What does that say about the rest of the comp?

Finishing around the same position but not having any real success would constitute treading water in my book.

And the rest of the comp is weak. Very, very weak. It's been a horrendous blunder that the club has not capitalised on the last several years with at least one flag. Geelong has not had great teams during this period, but no one has, really. The fact that GWS just slipped into a GF is emblematic of this.

We all wanted to beat Collingwood so we got the ‘easier’ side of the draw but based on the conditions and the hunger and aggression of GWS we would not have been certainties to beat them today, Hawkins or no Hawkins.

Now for the next seven days, we are all Toby Greene fans.

We should at least have a GF appearance for all the work of getting so deep in finals in recent years but I don't really look at any of the years as a wasted opportunity for a flag like I do with 2008. I look at last night and say we were the 2nd best team in the comp this year, we should have beaten Collingwood in the QF, we should have got through to the GF but Richmond are the best side this year. In 2013 I really think we would have lost to Freo in that GF, Freo actually should have beaten Hawthorn if they didn't waste their opportunities in the 1st half. 2016 was a bit of a bugger because GWS beating the Swans moved the Swans (who were the best team that year) to our side of the draw for the prelim. We weren't really up to the task in 2017, Richmond and Adelaide were better sides. But as a whole we should have got through to a grand final and the thing is once you get there anything can happen on the day and we could have had another flag to our name.
