YepYou're kidding, right?
Fair to say that Melbourne's team of the 20th century was dominated by players from their 6-flag golden era in the 50s and 60s.
Probably the one you missed though is Robbie Flower. He was a superstar in a very poor team in the 70s and 80s.
Other gun players for them before the current team might include Greg Wells, Todd Viney, Greg Healy and Brian Wilson (who like Shane Woewodin won a Brownlow playing for Melbourne, which is one more Brownlow than any of Gawn, Oliver or Petracca have won).
Some stars of the game also played for the Dees even though they made their names elsewhere like Gerard Healy (Sydney), Peter Moore (Collingwood - also won a Brownlow playing for the Dees), Carl Ditterich (St Kilda) and Kelvin Templeton (Footscray).
I do love the look of Wilson.
He not only gets the ball but also hits the scoreboard and has real speed/agility.
I guess my mental is that he just hasn't been rated in the top bunch... but he could be as good as them in the long run.
If we could split and get Wilson + another pick in the 20's it could be ok... But I just don't think Wilson will be around long after our #7 so we'd probably need to split with Dons or the Crows for that to happen.

Absolute champion ...be close to my favourite no geelong player. Ina era of brutality..how he survived is mind boggling. He would be even better now.Fair to say that Melbourne's team of the 20th century was dominated by players from their 6-flag golden era in the 50s and 60s.

If we take Harmes we're just keeping one of our young fellows out of the team; anyway he's a B-grader.
I also wouldn't discount the idea that young Jed is still available at 4. Nick Daicos didn't get selected until 3 and he was best in his class.Would North trade 14 + 19 to us for our 7?
If we were looking to accrue points to forward to GC for #4 if they made that trade it would put us in the box seat to snag #4..you
GC's 4 = 2034pts
Our 7 = 1644pts
Norths 14 + 19 = 2109pts
Dogs 10 + 17 = 2420pts
If we got Norths 14 + 19 and added on say pick 30 (Sav pick guess) that would give us more than the Dog 10 + 17 package (Dogs could add more though if really keen).
14, 19 and 30 = 2738pts
Essentially #7 + Sav's bounty for #4 which should give us one of Sanders or McKercher.
The key would be getting Norths 14 + 19 for our 7... which seems a possibility to me.
Maybe instead of this year's 19 it would be better for GC to get next year's North compo that they can trade back into this year after some bids... + North really should be trading it as it'll be under review if they don't.
Ahhh so many options but trading up is a chance if required to get a player we really like.
P.S I'm assuming this kinda stuff will be done live on draft night to make sure the player whatever team is targeting with the GC pick is actually available right at the time of that selection.
Daicos would have gone at one were it not for the fact that he was a F/S.I also wouldn't discount the idea that young Jed is still available at 4. Nick Daicos didn't get selected until 3 and he was best in his class.
Yep, and Walter would go at 2 in a power rankings driven world.Daicos would have gone at one were it not for the fact that he was a F/S.
Played against him in high school. Weighed about 50kg I reckon. But could mark anything over the pack, turn on aAbsolute champion ...be close to my favourite no geelong player. Ina era of brutality..how he survived is mind boggling. He would be even better now.
Any comment Gill?Daicos would have gone at one were it not for the fact that he was a F/S.
Nothing to do with Gil, just the fact that there was zero real incentive for the sides with the previous picks to bid on him.Any comment Gill?
So this is how the other half livesChrist we're bored this year. No Finals, looking like a light trade period. Looks like it's a big come down after winning a flag and then completely dominating trade period.
That was a special year, not every one can be like that.

You'd think so, or just adding to it with a Lord/Duursma or just more picks. With us being linked to nobody, am I right to assume that the club are super confident of the kids coming through and want to give them more opportunity next season. Clark, Dempsey, Conway, Mullin and Kvevitt for example.

Put the faith in the young brigade and add a few more names to the nucleus.
An off-season bringing in Ollie Lord, Darcy Wilson, George Stevens/Charlie Edwards with O'Brien as pure depth would be a productive one IMO.
Might not help us right away, and won't cause jubilation for the more casual supporters, but it's going to help go on another run in 5-6 years when that nucleus is in their prime.
Can't always win trade week, at the end of the day flags are all that matters.
That's my point. Academy and f/s slide. It's criminal that Gulden was still there to be bid on in the 30s.Nothing to do with Gil, just the fact that there was zero real incentive for the sides with the previous picks to bid on him.
Nope, no one want to come…..With us being linked to nobody, am I right to assume that the club are super confident of the kids coming through and want to give them more opportunity next season. Clark, Dempsey, Conway, Mullin and Kvevitt for example.
Wow, we do have some old-timers on this board.Played against him in high school. Weighed about 50kg I reckon. But could mark anything over the pack, turn on asixpencefive cent piece and run like the wind.
Then went on to be a legend. Plus a good and decent man.
Do we really need Oliver at all costs?? I get he would be fantastic, but he is not the difference between a flag and not a flag. We have many puzzle pieces to fill at present and handing 2x firsts for Oliver will leave plenty of other deficiencies that we won’t be able to fill.Best case would be to get Oliver, almost at any cost.
But absolute clear second best case would be for us to use pick 7 to help facilitate the Oliver trade for another club where we can push for overs.
Maybe Smith and a pick back for 7 or something like that, if he would chose the dogs for example.
We should stay interested in whatever the outcome is and look to be a player in it.

Watson is brilliant
This is what I was thinking too. And if Sanders is as good as people say he is, and a perfect fit for what we need, then he's likely to be more value to us than the combination of whatever is available at 7 and whatever we get back for Esava.
Which is why i think we should demand the best possible pick we can get from Port for Esava (ideally in the 20-25 range) and then trade that along with #7 to Gold Coast in return for #4.
Gold Coast are after points, and #7+#23 = 2,459 points while #4 is only worth 2,034 points. Even better, find a 3rd club interested in pick #7 with some later picks to trade, and load GCS up with even more points. Win-win-win.
