Do we think the away cheer squad will remain sectioned in the forward pocket next to the away changerooms? Before the redevelopment, the away cheer squad was in the city end goals.

Having away fans in the Selwood Stand closeby to the standing room would be a bit of fun!

The cheer squad is moving/has moved to the Selwood Stand

Not sure if that means the opposition cheer squad will be in the pocket or I'm guessing they'll move behind the goals in the Players Stand

They don't allocate the away cheer squad behind the goals they put them in the forward pocket.
Um the opposition cheer squad was behind the goals at the city end until we wait for it.... Knocked down the stand to build a new one.

Geelong cheer squad is going to be in the Selwood Stand, opposition at the river end.

Would you have liked the opposition cheer squad to be placed in the middle of a construction zone instead?

...and, the full video here:

I havent been their for many many years - but one thing i do like from your aerial shots - is the other oval right next to it and still plenty of trees in the general area

One thing i really enjoyed going to Princess Park - well it certainly wasnt watching Geel play their because i never once saw them beat Carlton , and i only saw a single victory over Haw their - the day Ablett made his comeback in the 2nds

But what i did enjoy was walking through the surrounds to get to the ground , there was parkland , other ovals and plenty of trees , it was a lovely setting back then the Carlton ground

It's probably an AFL requirement that cheer squads are behind or near the goals where possible. The Gabba's away cheer squad is slightly off alignment, but that's because there's a permanent deck area in the way. Can't really think of any other stadiums where the cheer squad isn't placed behind the goals/behinds.

First time poster on this thread. 40,000, why that number. Surely 50 - 55,000 would have been a in house figure to book mark bigger home games and home finals. 40,000 seems sfa.

Thinking that it’s a pretty simple answer - available space, and money

Restrictions & the necessity for the upgrade (especially Stage 1), meant that the stands were rebuilt in stages rather than as 1 brand stadium where that larger capacity could be designed from the start

If there was a multi billionnaire who’s happy to fund a complete brand new redevelopment of the ground which includes shifting things towards Latrobe Terrace, then I’m sure that we could increase the capacity again - but not sure that’s a realistic option

I think the cost of stadia is hitting a bit of a wall. Brisbane seems to have fallen over and they have the Olympics coming. To build a Marvel sized ground would have required a total fresh from the ground up rebuild. Knock over whats there and centralise the oval. Despite us heading towards 100,000 members in years to come how often do you think we will see the full house sign the 40 being reached. I will go out on a limb and say never for footy. The 40,000 is a theoretical number that I doubt we ever see unless its contrived for political reasons.

At the SCG the away cheer squad has always been in the pocket

I think 40k hits the mark. There's a danger in the stadium being too big for a city of Geelong's size (even with Melbourne not far away). I often think games at the MCG or Docklands look poor when the stadium is only half or a third full. We'll sell it out for games against bigger Melbourne teams, but I expect there'll be plenty of empty seats when playing interstate teams.

This is the seating plan as of today; I think it has been updated to reflect the final layout.
As expected, the Players Stand end goal-bays are for the visiting team’s supporters and cheer squad. Also, the area in front of the standing room and the bays adjacent to the big screen are General Admission.

It's been this was for at least the past half century. Ever since the 2008 season (post drought break) I've found the only, few times the atmosphere has been electric has been close games, in particularly when there is compounded bad calls made by the umpires when we're on the ropes, or following a bad incident in the remaining minutes. The crowd really gets riled up and there's little chance for people to calm down again.

A key thing there is how little we've had close games during this 15+ year period due to the nature of our generally good run and the teams we play. We the proper changing of the guard upon us, with the last remnant of that dynasty on their final journey, the next 3-5 years will be interesting, especially from this season with more of a cauldron finish to the ground.
Agree with this entirely.

Growing up in mid '00s up until now, you'd just go to games expecting to win. That feeling was/is compounded 10 fold at home games. A loss genuinely would shock the system, and a close game wouldn't sit right either.

If you've got enough of these types in the crowd, mixed with a high percentage of older patrons who aren't typically the yelling and screaming types, and it's no wonder that we have the 'golf clap' as our go to at home games after something deserving of excitement.

We've been good for so long now, that my generation of mid twenties and even into the thirties just have this easy going approach to Cats games. Particularly those who don't know the history of our club, and aren't aware that that wasn't always the case.

Hopefully we're never a poor side, but if we are, it'll be interesting, and I'd expect this approach to change pretty quickly.

We've now got an entire generation or two that expect this club to success. Not hope. Expect, which was a luxury of Hawthorn, Essendon, & Carlton supporters in a bygone era.

If that changes, a few will get restless very quickly I'd guess.

people shouldn't underestimate it.... IMO it is a big reason the Pies come back often late, if they are within a few and kick the first goal at home, the crowd starts heaving and there is no doubt in my mind it impacts both teams, the Pies get a lift, the opposition start to feel the pressure and then it just becomes a tidal wave. They are begrudgingly the best 23rd man in the comp those inbreed heathens!
Phil Davis summed it up best when describing the 2017 prelim & 2019 GF.

The roar from the Tiges supporters didn't stun the Giants players, but it energized the Richmond players. That 19th man aspect is a huge boost.

The fact that we’ve endured constant redevelopment in recent years has had an impact on atmosphere. Especially the last 3 seasons having a missing stand, no standing room and fans relocated from their traditional seats hasn’t helped. Not suggesting the atmosphere was electric beforehand, but it’s certainly a factor to consider.

Now that the redevelopment is complete, we’ve got foundations in place to create a great atmosphere again.

In everyone's opinion do we now have a stadium that isn't the worst in the league? Prior to Reno where did it rank? In your unbiased opinions. Let's exclude Tas, Ballarat, Cairns from consideration.
Ranking

MCG
Adelaide oval
Perth stadium
SCG
GMHBA?
Giants Stadium
Metricon Stadium
GABBA
Trust me, as someone living in Sydney who attends the SCG pretty regularly, KP has it covered, and has for some time.

I understand and appreciate the history, but the place is dilapidated. Because of Rugby League & Soccer not being suited to Cricket, it's unfortunate that it's essentially Sydney's best stadium.

It's not on KP's level, let alone the MCG, which is what it should be competing with.
