It's probably an AFL requirement that cheer squads are behind or near the goals where possible. The Gabba's away cheer squad is slightly off alignment, but that's because there's a permanent deck area in the way. Can't really think of any other stadiums where the cheer squad isn't placed behind the goals/behinds.
SCG. Similar to KP in the past, tucked slightly sideways from the goals.

Trust me, as someone living in Sydney who attends the SCG pretty regularly, KP has it covered, and has for some time.

I understand and appreciate the history, but the place is dilapidated. Because of Rugby League & Soccer not being suited to Cricket, it's unfortunate that it's essentially Sydney's best stadium.

It's not on KP's level, let alone the MCG, which is what it should be competing with.
As someone who also lives in Sydney I couldn’t agree more.
The SCG is a dump. The last time any money was spent on it, it was solely for the members. The rest of the ground is falling into decay.

Yep, it genuinely feels dirty sometimes particularly in the GA section.

It never gets talked about for some reason, but it's eerily similar to Subiaco when it was the end. The place was on its last legs, and the SCG is the same.

Our stadium might not be the biggest, but it's pretty state of the art now, and only the Hickey stand looks a little run down (even then, still only 20 years old). The rest more than stacks up around the world.

The SCG on the other hand...the Bradman/Noble stand look the goods, and the members pavilion purely on historical purposes, but the rest of it the place is a dump.

Sat in the brewongle stand which you never see on the TV. Like 60 seat wide bays and packed in tighter than the hickey stand somehow. Strange.

Seats secured today in the new stand for Rd 1... Really keen to have a look round and suss it out.. Are there actual plans or a layout posted anywhere publicly? Food/bars etc?

I think 40k hits the mark. There's a danger in the stadium being too big for a city of Geelong's size (even with Melbourne not far away). I often think games at the MCG or Docklands look poor when the stadium is only half or a third full. We'll sell it out for games against bigger Melbourne teams, but I expect there'll be plenty of empty seats when playing interstate teams.
This belongs in the unpopular opinions thread on the AFL forum - but I dont get why everyone talks up the MCG for the footy. When it gets a crowd of say 90k its a fantastic but when you get games when the stadium is only half full its such a dull atmosphere. I do miss places like morabbin when they were full. You are not supposed to watch the footy in luxury its supposed to be a muddy, working class game

That's not luxury, it's a circumstance of our game actually being a professional, world class, sport.

If the alternative is getting 3000 people to a VFL standard stadium like the NRL do every week, then I'll take what we've got every time.

We're the third largest domestic sporting code in terms of crowds in the world. Up amongst the EPL & NFL, with stadiums that can hold a candle - or even exceed - what they offer.

It's pretty incredible for us as a young, island, nation to be putting up those numbers.

I agree with you that we do miss a bit of the tribal aspect that we used to have, but that's on the clubs who turned their back on their local grounds.

They could have had what we have, but they chose to leave and go to the MCG & Marvel, and yet they still manage to act like we've got the unfair advantage even though it's been a 20 year journey to get us this far.

The MCG and Marvel are great stadiums, but the original post is right: it is embarrassing to see the MCG half empty most weekends and calling that good for the sport.

IMO top deck should be cheap as chips especially for non blockbuster games

Even the Romans understood this concept

I get attending footy is expensive, blockbuster games are always going to be popular but make less desirable games more accessible to some who may only be able to attend those games

I’m personally hoping not! Would love it to be held back for Round 1

I too will be surprised if the stand is open for Friday - was down at KP over the weekend and it still appears as though there is a little bit of landscaping work going on outside and I would assume finishing touches are still happening inside

With the 5pm Friday time slot I can’t imagine a crowd will be anything over 10,000 so I expect a similar set up to an AFLW game (Brownlow and premiership stands only - but may also open the lower Players if needed

Hopefully we get some fly through drone footage or something from the social media team. I thought we already had change rooms in the other new stand. Seems like we have new ones again and the women have new as well

As per the following article, which also includes photos:

  • New professional and community sport change rooms and facilities,

Maybe for use by the VFL & VFLW teams

That was my impression after the first visit 2023. For the defacto capital of Australia ... maybe the big nobs should concentrate on fixing up the SCG rather than hobnobing it in gambletown
